I absolutly fell in love with the cast-iron "hot tub" in the new Outpost book. We have an old claw foot tub in our barn that has seen better days. I want to refinish the tu. And make the tub shown in the book. Anyone have any info or knowledge on refinishing one of these tubs? There are quite a few scratches and stuff and it is very dirty. I'll try to dog it out today and post some pictures.

I dont know Julie.. but I am right there with you.. I found an old headboard and footboard.. that are cast iron that I am sanding ( electric sander).. and will figure out how to re-finish when I get it all smoothed out... I am sure that HGTV will have some ideas.. hey notice that MJ's book is on the front page of HGTV's website ? How cool is that? Somewhere I read that there is special paint... I will see if I can find the info and post it.....I am going to do the bath tub up at our cabin.... cannot wait.

My ex did refinish several when we were renovating an old house. He etch the inside of the tub, sanded and used bondo to smooth the outside of the tub and then sprayed the inside and out with a paint that is simular to automotive paint. It had to cure about a week before you could use the tub. I stenciled one of the tubs and it was very pretty. But my favorite one was a candy apple red on the outside and inside was white. The finish was very hard and had no problems with chips

Oh...let me know how it goes! I dragged home some old porcelain sinks from the "real" junk yard around here thinking I would somehow support them on rerod or something and put them in my back yard with plants in them which of course would not require refinishing but I am always interested in how things are done becuase you never know when you need that info! And of course I have not done anything wiht those sinks yet!
I haven't gotten my book yet..I was going to order but I'm going to Iowa this next week and I thought I would get it faster at the B&N there...they better have it or I will be mighty upset! LOL! Especially after hearing about some of the neat stuff in there....can't wait!

I'm thinking of doing mine either cobalt blue with a black bottom or candy apple red with a black bottom. My tub doesn't have feet but my mom and dad just took out the old tub from the house they are remodling at their B&b and dad is going to mail me the feet!

you can find tub and tile refinishing supplies at your local Lowe's or Home Depot..they sell a product that can be colored in basic glaze colors..usually pastel type colors..oh gracious I forget the name of the product right now..but it can also be used to paint over kitchen counter laminate.
Good luck to you though.

Also, if you think the scratches are not very deep, you might try automotive rubbing compound on the tub. I used it on my mom's tub once and it worked pretty well.

thank you Tina....I have plans to paint my countertops and everyone said you had to use regular paint and kilz first of course and then many layers of poly.....but you say they have a special paint just for laminate! PTL! I've been searching all over and all I get is that "deer in the headlight" look! That's great...I'll feel much better about it now! Awesome Blossom!
I swear I have gotten more good info from you gals than I ever have from any of those "experts" at the hardware stores!
