Can you substitute the chillover powder in any recipe that calls for plain gelatin powder? Has anyone been experimenting with that?


I've made the vanilla pudding and the lemon with blueberry pudding featured in the MJ magazine edition with all the recipes and no one liked them except me , so I wondered if I could use up my remaining chillover packets in one of my old "standby" recipes that I know the kids and hubby like.

Hi Renee!
I haven't tried the puddings but everyone in the family has enjoyed the "jello" style chill overs. I have made two of the recipes from the book with great success. The powder is basically agar which we used in Japan and when we lived there I used agar to thicken my gravy. Try experimenting with some fruit juice or one of the stand bys. I also made a pina colada chillover with mine using coconut milk, pinapple juice and fresh pinapple puree. Keep trying!

Hi Renee! My name is Kimberly and I'm the Food Stylist and Recipe Developer here at MaryJanesFarm. I've been playing around with Chillover Powder and trying to work out exactly how to substitute it in recipes calling for gelatin. It's still a work in progress, but I'll let you know when I get it all figured out.

A Farmgirl named Linda sent us her recipe for Chillover Strawberry Jam along with a sample, and oh my goodness... it was hands down the best jam I've ever had! We all went crazy for it! We'll be posting the recipe on the magazine section of the website soon, so look out for it. We had an overabundance of frozen strawberries here on the farm, so I thawed them out and gave them a try with the jam recipe, and it was fabulous. So, if you don't have access to really ripe fresh strawberrries, frozen strawberries work wonderfully.

Anyhow, I'll keep you posted on my Chillover Experiments.

I have been having luck with recipes that call for gelatin and corn starch. My husband loved the brown sugar and cream ("This tastes like cookie dough!!!") chill-over but didn't have glowing reviews for anything else I made. I thought they were all great.

But then I found an old recipe for chocolate silk and modified it a little bit. Here is that thread:

I also had good results with that recipe using 2% milk instead of all the other milks. It good...just not as rich.
