Just going through a rough patch this year so far and haven't got out of it yet. Sometimes I feel like everyone here is so industrious and tidy and indefatigable and I'm up to my silly nose in water and dog paddlin' for all I'm worth. Anyone else ever feel this way? So while I've been working all spring and so far this summer on a farm, my house is a mess, I'm a mess, I just lost my dog Hooligan, who was my best buddy, to a heart tumour and I'm just feeling over my head and not much of a REAL farmgirl. I've had little time to post and no time to spend with my chapter. So I'm sorry if I've just dropped off the planet and not been here for my sisters and friends.
Hugs and blessings to all of you

oh Annika I am thinking of you. I lost my golden about 2 weeks ago and one of my other dogs despite being on preventative is quite sick with heartworms. We are currently in a battle with the company to get themto pay for the treatment. So I understand your feeling of loss. I rarely find time in the summer to be creative an industrious. Seems like most of the day is spent in farm chores and basic upkeep of the house and yard. You are not alone. Maybe you could try scheduling in 15 minutes a day to do something creative. Once you meet that goal for a week bump the time up to 25 or 30 minutes. If you want to do it make it a priority and then it will start to come more naturally. Good luck!

Hi Annika! Sorry you're having a tough time. When I feel like all the wind is gone out of my sails, sad, tired, etc., I find that if I do some little bit of a project with bright colors - sewing, embroidery, knitting - it makes me feel a bit better. Not a lot, but just a bit of energy. And so sad about your buddy Hooligan! Dogs are the most understanding sorts of friends. Sue in Richland WA |

Oh Annika...I know you must be feeling awful and SO overwhelmed with it all! My heart goes out to you sweetie and know that you just have to take baby steps and not huge giant steps. Allow yourself some slack to grieve for your best friend and don't be so hard on yourself. I know we all expect SO much of ourselves every day...I do it to myself all the time...it's crazy....when these situations arise be even kinder to yourself and don't apologize for being human. We all love you here and you are NOT alone...we've all been there...maybe not today but at some time in our lives....breathe, cry, grieve and maybe all 3 while in a nice hot bath! My Mother used to say a hot bath was like 8 hours sleep...not so sure how accurate that is but it does sort of melt your cares away and it's like a warm hug when there's no one to give you one. And like Julie said....baby steps...don't look at the big picture...just pick the top 3 things you'd like to get done today....just one a time....if they don't all get done...there's always tomorrow but first ensure you get your rest, you have good food to nourish you and you have some little reward at the end of the day to look forward to...a good book, a glass of wine, a movie to watch....something to tell yourself....you worked hard and you deserve a reward for it. Anyway....I live alone and do that stuff all the time to motivate and keep myself going and to inspire me and keep me from getting too lonely I have all you gals! We're here for you! Love ya

Oh Annnika- I know how it feels. Right now I feel like I am paddling backwards and I don't think I can do anything about it. I am just doing the basics to survive and I am ok with that. Take a breath, a bath and some good cry time and know you will be ok. Things will come together when the time is right and know until then, you are fully capable farmgirl just taking it easy.

It has nothing to do with you being "good" or not!! Everybody has those black eye kind of days...just hang on!! I felt that way for the most of May! I told my mom that God forgot to tell me where my little black hole was, because I sure could have used one to crawl in to. I am sorry about your dog...we lost ours several years ago and haven't had one since. I don't care what some may say...it is a family member that is lost, and it hurts.
Truly, I hope that it gets better for you soon! ((BIG Hugs))

Annika, this IS what it is like for most of us. It's the farmgirl spirit that keeps you going even when everything isn't perfect. It's finding beauty in a shoulder to cry on and knowing you have so much more in common with lots of folks than it feels like sometimes when you're in the middle of a tough stretch. Lots of support your way! I'm a far-from-perfect-farmgirl. :) We're only human, right? Gotta love yourself and your life as you are, because you're doing the best you can each day, and THAT is admirable and worthwhile. Comparisons always leave us feeling short, so don't compare. Give you a hug.
We make a difference. |

Annika: Of course I've felt the same feelings...just a couple of months ago too. My mom had 2 major surgeries and was sick for over a year (really bad) and the emotional and physical drain of being there for her and the "strong one" in the family wore me down to a frazzle on top of work and lambing and the farm, etc. Didn't realize it until it was all over (my mom is doing well!) and I crashed hard just like you are. It happens. I got back up on the horse when I got darned good and ready and feel great now.
Thinking of you. If I had any advice to give it would be this: Don't beat yourself up over needing some down time...and when you're darned good and ready (that's the farmgirl talking!)brush yourself off and get back up on the horse after all the buck is out of him. Take care. Jami in WA

oh Annika ((((((((((hugs))))))))) All of us go through seasons. I know it's hard but you are growing and learning even in your rough patch. That does not mean you are not a good farm girl! Saying a prayer for you, I know it's hard to lose a friend. hugs

I'm so sorry to hear about Hooligan-I know how hard it is to lose a buddy like that.
In the meantime, take good care of yourself. And don't worry about being a perfect farmgirl! Sometimes my house looks good, sometimes my garden looks good, sometimes I look good, but very rarely all at the same time!!

Oh Annika...I am sorry to hear about your buddy Hooligan. It is so hard to lose our beloved friends like that. As for rough patches and all..we sure all have our times don't we? You ARE a real farmgirl cuz you ARE not by what you can do. We all have times we can't do as much as we would like. I have sure had my times of barely getting by. Hang in there..we love you!!

Annika, You are normal. It is normal to feel these feelings, we all do at times. Like they said, just hang in there. This too shall pass. You are among friends.

I'm feeling a bit more chipper today. Thank you all for the encouragement. I've got Hooligan's ashes coming in a nice wooden box with his photo set into it, so I feel sad and miss him, but there is a finished quality to it now. Was out looking at my plum trees today and looks like I'll have lots in spite of the cold spring that we had. Looking forward to canning and jelly-ing some of them. We all get down and in over our head sometimes. Thanks for reminding me what farm sisters are =)
Hugs to all

Hi Annika,
So sorry you've been having a rough patch. Sometimes I think we might set the bar a little too high. I know I've done that sometimes.
I find working on a small project, or getting a batch of canning done, gives me a sense of accomplishment when it feels like I'm drifting away.
Try to make time for a little holiday this summer, even if it's just a day trip.
Remember, there is no such thing as a bad farmgirl. You want to see a mess? Come look at my dining room!
Hugs, Lori
