This volunteered in 2 places in my yard. Since I didn't know what it was, I decided to let it grow and figure it out. But I still haven't figured out what it is and my neighbors don't know either. One thought it was swiss chard, but it doesn't look like any swiss chard I've ever seen.
What do you gals think?

it looks like chard but I've never grown it so not sure. The flower might tell you more? Are mustard greens similar to chard? I have several "unidentified" plants in my garden and I usually wait until it flowers and if I like it I keep it...if not it's labeled a weed and get's excavated. Let us know if you find out for sure.

Sorry, I should have said the pics were on my blog!
No, Julie, the stems are not woody at all. I'll just continue to wait and take more pics when it flowers. The one that I took pictures of gets sun in the early morning but is in the shade for the rest of the day. The other one is shaded all morning and gets sun all afternoon and it looks pretty pathetic. So, I'm assuming it prefers shady areas; if that helps.

Hey, could it be horseradish? It kind of looks like it. I have a neighbor a few houses over with horseradish. Could seeds from hers been somehow transported to my yard? Is horseradish still good after it flowers? Is there some way to tell if that is what it is?

Nope, it's a weed...curled dock. Cursed one too...has a taproot that goes half way to China! I get them too and you sure don't want it going to seed.

Thanks, Diane and Laurie. It appears to have some medicinal uses, but can also be slightly toxic. I'm not messing with it. I'll destroy them. It may take me a few years to actually kill it, though :(

Laurie - Lisa's plant is curled dock. It's different than burdock. I didn't know burdock had medicinal qualities though, that is interesting. All I know is the humungous burrs it gets in the fall that stick like velcro! Di |

What an image! At least they are big enough to pick off. My roof grass has seed heads like arrows and it takes forever to get them out of my shoelaces! That won't be staying during the redesign.
