I'm a newbie to Mary Jane's farm. I picked up a copy of her magazine at our local Tractor Supply store and found that I just couldn't put it down!! I have a full-time job as a teacher and find that I struggle with fitting in the farm-life and the work-life. (My dream is to farm full-time eventually). Any suggestions out there from you veteran farm and work girls? I'm so glad to be a member of this forum. Have a great day everyone!!

Howdy from Texas Jody! I'm glad you found us..I think you'll fit right in. As for your question, the only thing I can suggest is starting out small if you can and see how things go. It's a good way to find out your strengths, weaknesses and what does and doesn't work. I started off with just a small garden and a few chickens. I found out I enjoyed the chickens a lot more than I did gardening, so I leaned more that way and spent a couple of years on the animal part. Sometimes what you think won't take much time, ends up way more than you thought and vice versa. You're gonna be tired. Take vitamins and hang in there! ~kate

Welcome Jody, I have found for my own sanity ( and those around me) that finding a balance is absolute KEY...I know that a "J.O.B." can take as much from us as we are willing to give... I determinded to draw my line, work my 40 hours and the rest of the time was to cultivate my dreams.. and so far it seems to be working.....I think that when we put our dreams on the "to do list" they somehow just take root!

Hi Jody! I'm also a teacher with a farm. I live in town, but our farm ground is close by. I don't yet know how to juggle a full work schedule and all my plans for the farm, but I know it has been done before and I plan to give it a whack. :) My dreams for the farm sound like, "When we retire, we'll need x,y,z, so let's get started." Then we plant an orchard, build fence, plan a barn, look at old houses to "rescue" and have moved...you know, lots of dreams. :) And a few at a time we're doing it. I not-so-secretly plan to "retire to the farm" sooner rather than later, so I can move to the dream we're building and still teach (also a rewarding way to spend a life). 'nuff about me. Teachers love to ramble... Welcome to the farm and I'm so glad you found and joined us. I'm sure you will enjoy the connections. :) Happy summer!
We make a difference. |

Welcome Jody!
I know what you mean by struggling for balance between the two. This year we didn't put out much in our garden. We bought all kinds of seeds but just got too busy with work and other issues that have been going on. I look forward to getting to know you better.

Hey Jody! I'm new to the forums as well and also a teacher! I know exactly what you mean when you are trying to stay in balance. I know our jobs aren't necessarily as "physical" as some but boy by the end of the day, my brain is toast. I'm grateful for the summers to rejuvenate and restore a little balance to my life. Hope to run across you again in the forums. |

Howdy Jody!
I am also a teacher; the balance is hard to find, especially when school is going full swing. I just started out small--mini me small--and then just kept adding in! This year I am adding in chickens and an orchard. Hopefully, in the future I can farm full time, but for now I am content with both! You will love the forum, but I promise, it gets ADDICTIVE!!!
