What do you think are the secrets? Or, living a healthy long life?
My papa ate 3 big meals a day, ate everything on his plate, did not snack, only drank a little coffee in the morning, iced tea or water and had dessert every night after dinner. He rode his bike and walked, gardened and his disposition was sunny and happy, calm and quiet. What ultimately killed him was the medicine he was put on that destroyed his liver, other than that, he was as healthy as can be.
I grew up without snacks as a kid. We ate 3 bigs meals a day and if we were truly starving when we got home from school, we were giving a piece of fruit. I didn't drink soda except for going out on very few and far between special times, we were outside all day from 8-8 in the summer, always thrown outside after school. Tv was on for Saturday morning cartoons and we were allowed a tv shoe on Saturday night (I seem to remember the Love Boat, Battlestar Galactica, things like that..yep..I am a dork ) and I really think puberty and depression which caused me to eat junk food by the pounds as a teenager( which conicided with my mom buying more pre-made, pre-packaged foods) caused my weights issues but I was still active.
So what do you think is the key?? I think getting rid of stress is a big one too.

I think being happy/content has a lot to do with it too.
My family on my Mom's side are/were mostly farmers. They ate three hearty meals a day, most of which was drowned in cream or butter and most of them are still alive and kicking at 80+ years old. But they worked the land, and worked very hard, so that has a lot to do with it. They are/were active.

Hey Heather, I recently read a story where they researched people who lived to 80 years and beyond and they found that the single most consistent trait amongst them was their ability to diffuse, or deal well with, stress. So happiness is the key. They actually studied a few people up to 100 years old and their diet was all starch, buttered stuff, so...haha, they definitely enjoyed their food!
I think you should eat in moderation, don't deny yourself happiness or pleasure, and spread happiness when you can. It definitely makes for a less stressful life

I think that genetics have something to do with it.
Beyond that, my opinion is that a simple, natural lifestyle will prolong your life...our ancestors ate high fat, high cholesterol food and lots of it, but it was food that they raised--grass fed meats, free range eggs, raw milk and butter, whole grains and lots of fruits and veggies that they grew themselves. They worked hard, loved the Lord and each other, and were contented with what they had.

there was a good article in the 2009 farmer's almanac entitled "how to live to be 100 or more." these are the tips "research suggests you can improve your odds" to live to a ripe old (happy) age:
- take it easy - people who aren't stressed or flustered - use your brain - challenge your mind everyday - stay physically active - get out of the house or invite people into your home - laugh a lot - flirt - yes! flirt! this one cracks me up! - stay trim - doesn't mean stick skinny, just a healthy weight for you - enjoy sunshine regularly
i think alot of it has to do with being happy and stress free... i feel overwhelmed with all the information out there for suggestions to be healthy. i don't buy into most of it because i think alot of it is just to make money. i agree that high fat and cholesterol isn't going to kill us... it's the products our bodies havn't been using in the past and are not used to... we don't know what these products will affect our bodies. (at some point i want to write a topic devoted to this subject). |

A friend of mine has a greatgrandmother who is 103 years old right now. She has some arthritis, but no major health issues. She eats whatever she wants and has something sweet (dessert) daily. She said that she never stopped moving about, did her yard work herself and kept a happy outlook on life. At 103, I don't think she does too much in her yard unaided anymore, but WOW!! She still has a very keen mind. :)

My mother is 92 and is seemingly very happy. She lives by herself, still drives (locally) to the store, post office, etc. She too likes to keep busy and have a project always going. She paints, knits, sews, writes letters. I feel like the lazy one. She eats well and more important--at her age--remembers to eat. She is very healthy and takes no pills. I hope I inherited all her good genes. LOL. MB
