Can I brag just a little here Girls...? With all the bad health issues that have been going on at Farm Fabulous, I have one bright spot I want to share with you all. After 29+ years of sewing at the kitchen table (before and after meals of course), in the basement, in a closet with a window, sitting on the couch with the sewing machine placed on top of the ironing board (when we were first married and didn't even OWN a kitchen table..talk about a challenge...wiggle, wobble)..I have a studio all my own. I still can't believe it, every time I walk in there I get just the biggest smile. The though occurred to me one sleepless night, that the nicest sunniest cheeriest room in our home was the master bedrrom, which now that the kids are all on their own doesn't get used much anymore.I mean, we slept in it, (and other things in the dark of the night (wink), but we didn't need to use it as our retreat for quiet or privacy like we did when we had teens at home.So I brought this up to my hubby, who without a doubt is the nicest, easiest-going man I have ever met, and he said go for it. So we put our King sized bed in one of the smaller rooms, which is now wall to wall bed, but surprisingly cozy (we call it our "clubhouse").And I have this grand space with a large kitchen table (all to myself, no clearing for meals!), closet space galore, sunshine, french doors that open to our front garden with my porch swing, room for a little tv and dvd player (that hubby bought me for my room for my birthday)becasue I love to watch old movies while I sew !I am in heaven! I made 4 dresses and 2 pairs of gussied up overalls for the grandaughters, cut charm squares, finished The Traveling Apron(s),all in just the last couple days. Look out Ebay, here comes my wares !!
Thanks for listening tome babble.... hopefully this will inspire some of you younger stay at home Moms with small kids..your day will come!Mine did! ...and faster than you think. |

Oh Diane! Thank you for sharing your wonderful idea and your satisfaction! I agree, once the kids leave home, you can repurpose and make life fit better with what you have! Terrific idea to turn the master bedroom into your studio! I have a very small house and have just recently 'declared' the whole thing is my studio! That way I don't have to clean up after each project. Of course, no partner to worry about, so hey, works for me!
May the sun bring you new energy by day, may the moon softly restore you by night, may the rain wash away your worries, may the breeze blow new strength into your being, may you walk gently through the world and know its beauty all the days of your life. ~~Apache Blessing

Diane, that is so cool. What a good idea. I turned my family room into a "sort of" studio because I like to work at the "hub" of the home. My hubby was nice enough to allow it even though I do make quite a mess. :-) At least we have a living room at the front of the house if we need a presentable area for guests. Clare, your idea is great too, a live-in studio! Nancy |

Diane, your sewing studio sounds wonderful! It's a sad stage of our lives when our babies grow up and move out on their own, but the silver lining is our *re-claiming* of their space! LOL! My eldest had a smaller room that, once he moved out, we started using as a catch-all room. I set up my sewing area in there with the hopes of getting back into sewing (hasn't happened yet! LOL!). My goal is to clear out all the *treasures* that are no longer needed and GET RID OF THEM! It is nice to have a space that you don't have to worry about cleaning up for meals!!! ~~~Toni~~~

Diane, It sounds WONDERFUL! Congratulations! What kind of old movies do you favor when sewing? I go for the 1930 and 1940 comedies, myself. There is, oddly enough, nothing more colorful than an old black-and-white movie to the imagination! And I do a lot of imagining when sewing. This house is the first one I've ever rented where I had room for a sewing room. It's tiny but I like it!

Oh Diane - that sounds wonderful!! I am still waiting and hoping that I one day have a room for all my creativity. Sewing, the latest craft idea (I make things that I find useful for the house). And one Tampa Bay Buccanneer themed one for my hubby to watch his football and TV in! (with extra insulation in the walls so I don't have to hear it - lol) |

yeah for you! After 24 years I finally have my own corner, not the grand studio you have but at least it is my space. It is a gloified cupboard, but it has doors so I don't have to clean up everytime, I just shut it up. It is nice ot have one's own corner.

Diane, that is super!!! A place of one's one to pursue their dreams and hobbies is so necessary! Sounds like you have the ideal spot to pursue your dreams! And to have your DH backing you is wonderful too! I am so happy for you!

What a grand idea you had. I think we all should constantly look at our nests and make adjustments of how we need to use them. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks girls. I won't forget you...I will be soon marketing my wares on Ebay..my speciality is pillows from vintage fabrics...have to do something with the 20,000 yards of barkcloth I have hoarded...and crazy quilted Christmas stockings...I also do custom sewing, been doing that and hanging wallpaper for years...I have done custom bedding, curtains, dust ruffles, nurseries, duvet covers, you name it.The paper hanging is getting a little harder now the body is getting older though...I have even had some of my paper and custom sewing in a magazine (Victorian Homes) although I didn't get credit for it..she wasn't a nice lady! Well, that was quite a brag fest wasn't it..just tell me to shut up next time will ya? |
