Today at one of our regular lunch spots (a local, independently owned Thai restaurant), the plates came out with only about 3/4 the amount of food usually served, with barely 1/2 of the chicken it usually contains. It honestly looked like an appetizer portion, and we are regulars there so we asked about it. The server said that the owner chose to "cut serving portions instead of raising menu prices like all the other restaurants are doing".
This is the first really noticeable change I have seen around here, and I am wondering if others are seeing price hikes and/or serving portion changes at your regular eating spots?

I have noticed prices changing and also menu items. The french bistro that I like to eat at down the street had such a great deal for lunch, but they've removed it now--for $6.25, you could get their sandwich (which was gorgeous and made with quality ingredients) and a cup of lovely soup...now that's gone, and they have a limited lunch menu and everything is $10.00 and up. I was sortof surprised because the area around the courthouse is notoriously cheap--$5.00 lunches are the norm and if you don't have that, you won't be in business long.
On the other end of the spectrum, the restaurant my husband works at has seen a boom in business, oddly enough--and their portions are appropriate (i.e., small to some ), and costly--market fish at $32.00 a plate, and no entrees under $19.00. People buy bottles of wine with dinner and always get dessert. He said that he's noticed that the clientelle there doesn't really "care" about cost and are the class of folks that this economy isn't bothering and they continue to eat out like they did before. You know, "Let them eat cake!" type of folks

Okay, I have to confess. Sometimes, I go across the street from my office and have a bean burrito at Taco Bell. And last week, they went up on the poor humble bean burrito by TWENTY CENTS!!!!! Instead of 79 cents, it's now 99 cents! And they've got it listed on a new promotional menu with a couple of really new items like it's...ONLY 99cents! LOL!!!!! Sneaky Taco Bell! :(

Honestly I think Americans would do well if more restaurants cut there portions. Typically when you order pasta in a restaurant they give you the equivalent of 3 or MORE portion sizes!
We don't eat out a whole lot so I couldnt really say for sure how things are around here. There really arent any locally owned places anyway, just chains.

I agree (not that either of you are water mammals)--that portions should be smaller. For some reason in this country, value = excess. We went to dinner at our favorite restaurant in Louisville last weekend, and ordered 2 appetizers--but wait--there were 2 pieces of each item on each plate, so we each got 1 of each. Perfect. Then, we had our entrees (which were beautiful and oh so good) and thought mine was pork and Jus got a filet, neither of them were humongous, we didn't finish them, but had to have a petite creme brulee...which was tiny, but perfect. We were STILL full. But not to the point where we felt sick, which often happens with excessive meals, or lower grade food (for me).
