Hi, farmgirls! Found MJF thru an article in our local newspaper reviewing Mary Jane's new book. There I was, sitting in Borders, voraciously reading it, and feeling like I'd come home! I'm an on-again, off-again farmgirl living in northcoast California. No farm at the moment, but a nice quiet cottage in the suburbs with a big back yard just bursting with potential! Huge, ancient cherry tree right in the middle from the old ranch that used to be here--made awesome cherry preserves one bountiful summer. Spent my childhood weekends on my grandparents' farm in Upstate NY--canning, baking, running thru the cornfields with all my aunts and cousins:a stint living in East Wind Community in Tecumseh, Missouri--milking the cows, making cheese and tending the gardens (hippy farmgirl stage), a couple years in southern Humboldt of alternative living--water/solar energy, big garden, wood heat (Earthmama stage, with hubby and baby). Just spent 5 years sorta out of "it"--triathlon training for ironman race. Bad knees and shoulders have steered me back toward the simple things and I am excited to be knitting, baking, and dreaming again of a farm of our own some day! Looking forward to getting to know you!

Hi all! Thank you for the warm welcome. Junebug, I vaguely remember taking the Greyhound bus into West Plains back in the very beginning of my East Wind Community days. I was 19, the year was 1983, I had 2 big suitcases, and what I remember most was the RED DIRT. I wonder if it really WAS West Plains??? Anyway, I'm sure I have more to LEARN from you all than I have to TEACH, but we all have something to offer, I guess. I signed up on book list and am enjoying perusing all the forums--I will watch for you!

Hi Kim. Bess is short for Elizabeth, which was my Grandma's name. I remember being a little kid and visiting a dairy farm where a calf was just born. The farmer said he would name her after me! I was so tickled. Later on I realized that Bess was a pretty common name for milk cows! Didn't like my name for a while after that, but I've come to appreciate its old-fashioned, no-nonsense feel. Have a beautiful day!
