freeze your fruits and vegetables in? I have some strawberries and I want to freeze them but would like to know if there is an alternative to using baggies and if I use the freezer jars do I have to add sugar or syrup to them? I'd rather go sugarless but can't find any info on doing that in my Ball Blue book on freezing. Thanks for any insights girls.

When I freeze berries I put them on a cookie sheet lined with wax or parchment paper, freeze them, then store them in a lided freezer container.
Most of the time I don't know what their end use will be so I just freeze them raw, no sugar or anything. |

I don't use much glass to freeze in, for some reason I end up breaking it. I do use plastic freezer bags, but I freeze my berries first on a cookie sheet. I wonder if a doubled paper bag would work for containing the berries if they are already frozen?? Hmmm... good question.

wonder if I could put freezer paper around them if they are already frozen Angie? it is coated on the inside so they wouldn't stick.

Denise- I don't think you would need to. If they are frozen first they shouldn't stick together inside the jar or stick to the jar unless melting and re-freezing happens.

so it's ok to put them in a freezer jar then Alee? Do I need to sterilize the jars or anything like when canning or just make sure they are clean?

I use freezer jars sometimes (although I DO use plastic too) for freezing (I do alot more canning than freezing though. Freezing in jars does work great. You don't need to use sugar any more than you do in any other container...they work great.

I would just wash the jar like normal, then make sure it is 100% dry. Any moisture will make things stick a bit just like it would if you put it in plastic that was damp. Once they are frozen on a cookie sheet, just fill a jar with your frozen items, cap to keep frost out and viola! Since everything is going to be in the freezer you don't have to worry about much of anything germ wise. Just think of the glass as another container option- like Aunt Jenny says- no different than plastic containers.

ok well I got those strawberries done and they look so good in those jars. I did not pre-freeze them because I put them in sliced. It was easy and not alot of mess because I just washed em and used my egg slicer and dropped them in the jars. Finding space in my freezer made me realize I need to clean that thing out! thanks everyone.

You can use glass jars in the freezer without and problem. Just remember if something liquid is in them allow for expansion.
