This was the headline I just saw on Yahoo Politics...As you know, we had our Primary elections today in Kentucky.

"Exit poll: Clinton buoyed by whites in KY"...the article goes on to say that when questioned, whites in Kentucky would rather vote for the Republican candidate or not vote at all, as opposed to voting for Obama, if he becomes the Democratic nominee.

I mean, I know some folks feel that way, but to actually make it publicly known and identify the attitude with ALL Kentuckians REALLY bothers me. I love this state, and I'm sorry that they've made us all appear so ignorant.

Jonni - Kentucky is, like every state in this country, wonderful and beautiful, and do not pay attention to bad press. The south has done everything it can to overcome racism, and I would bet Kentuckians are the best hearted, most generous folks around.

Thanks, Shirley...I was almost compelled to email the AP reporter who wrote the story...he was VERY down on Kentucky, citing that it has a large low income and under-educated population, so that accounts for the ignorance in voting....

Gah. I just want to sceam from the rooftops and show my diploma from a very liberal arts school.

I am always amazed that some will try to classify a group of people with only one mind...us farmgirls are all smart enough to know that not all women are a like and not all Kentucky folks are alike.. only small minds think that way......I am only one person.. but the divercity of just my personalities is staggering I cannot even image that you could get a whole state of people to be clones....

Well put, Rene. I feel like you--I am interested in, want to learn about, or already have grown to like or love, almost everything. My interests, like my friends are diverse. I'm not elitist, I'm not some hippy dippy--I'm a compassionate, thinking feeling person. There are many more of us in this state, I know for a fact--some of them on this very forum! This wasn't the only article I've read since the poll returns--most of them make it seem like there are about 10 people in Kentucky that are color blind. I just get myself all bent out of shape :(

Jonni girl,
We know how smart you are girl, but I sure can understand gettin ticked about other's ignorance. Is that like bein called white trash cause you live in a mobile in a mobile home park? What silliness comes from ignorance. And how foolish it all is.
People don't fit in a bunch of catergories, we are all amazingly unique. You are one very speical girl as are all the Kentucky gals. You generosity of spirit, caring love and laughter have been a cool drink in a desert. So remember that when they are bein ignorant!!!!!!

Jonni-
E-mail the reporter!! Let him know how smart you are, how much you care, and that Kentucky is much more than what he assumes it to be. I love Kentucky, it's beauty and the people who live there. (My sister lived there until last summer!) It's on my dream list of places to move to someday.
Unfortunately the media feel that they are all-powerful and that their opinion is the only one to consider. Time to speak up and change that, I'd say!!:)

You know, I read some of those articles yesterday and the more intelligent ones seemed to be saying that Obama has a problem with rural voters in general. Clinton is cleaning up in rural areas, which will be a problem for the Democrats if Obama ends up being the one to run against McCain. I was going to ask the question here, why do you think that is? Do you like Clinton better than Obama? If so, why?

Hey, Jonni - Obama carried Jefferson County by a wide margin! :) And what really irritates me is that I feel when Hillary infers that white people would vote for McCain over Obama, she is bringing race into the mix. I've been so proud of this country in this entire election process. In my lifetime, I can remember going into department stores and other places as a child, and seeing signs on restroom doors 'White' and 'Colored'. Believe me, we have come a long way, baby! That the majority of voters in this country have voted for the message and not against the color. WOW! And that a woman of any color has come this far. I'm just proud of the United States today! :D

Hi Ladies!

This is a great discussion! Can I please ask that we don't talk about who we are going to vote for or who we think is best for the job. Once we start bringing up who we are going to vote for it opens the door for a lot political debate that could leave some with hurt feelings and lines drawn in the sand, so to speak. No one has mentioned it yet, but I just thought I might make that request just in case.

Janice- I agree! It is great to see that our Country is moving forward from the past where Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama would have never even considered the possibility of running for our President.

Jonni- I think it is flabbergasting that anyone- maybe _especially_ a reporter would have such a skewed vision of the Bluegrass State! You are going to find uneducated in any state, that is the sad reality of our Nation, but with all the money that I know is in Kentucky- I imagine the education index is actually pretty high! I don't think you could classify any State in the USA as "uneducated" I would be sending him an email too!

I am so honored to have you girls...truly. It gives me great hope that a few women (who wouldn't know each other from Adam on the street), who are scattered across this nation are thinkers, and do'ers and have hearts filled with love. That we can all agree that this is a monumental moment in our nation's history. Oh the possibilities!!!!

You know how they say your childhood shapes you? When I was in 6th grade, we took a school trip to NYC. We did all the "NYC" things your supposed to do, and we even went to Macy's to see a "real live NYC department store". While I was sitting in the chair getting lipstick put on by one of the makeup counter girls, she asked where I was was from. I told her, and she leaned over and looked at my feet. Then she said, "why, you have shoes on!!!!" Even THEN I knew that people thought we were bumpkins...Now I know, after living in NYC that there are very few born and bred New Yorkers--she was probably from North Carolina or something!!!

To think that, in this state, in this Country today, someone would say, I would rather STAY HOME than vote for a black man is just unbelievable to me. I know it's your right to vote or not vote. But that race or gender would even matter vs. ability floors me. That some folks can't come out of that little box our environment (meaning: cultural) puts us in. I wanted to say something to the effect of (to the reporter) I am white, I am a woman and I am colorblind.

Jonni, I hear you! I don't remember which channel I was watching last night but there were several sitting around a political round table and discussing the primary here. One of the fellows said something to the effect of...(to paraphrase---- well Clinton won large in Kentucky but Oregon would be a whole different matter due to the number of well-educated and intellectual people living there). Huh??? Now I just thought that statement was rude, insulting, and condescending on all levels, to both of the candidates as well as the citizens of Oregon and Kentucky. I wish I could remember who said it but I was changing channels back and forth all night to watch the election news as well as American Idol.

I'm so tired of the media putting their spin on things, but I do know that I have the power to switch the tv off and I will use it. I just wish they would let the candidates say what they are for or against and what they want to do as president and let us make up our own minds accordingly. The infighting of the pundits and the candidates themselves doesn't help. I know the knowledge of some pundits is helpful for insight but when they just sit and yell back and forth at each other, well it really kind of turns me off. Sorry for complaining but I think I have election fatigue. It seems like they've been talking about this for nearly 3 years now.

I no longer watch news on the television, I prefer to pick and choose news on the internet. I think the press is such a zoo these days. Reporters blow things way out of proportion, and they love to inflame their readers. It's not that aI want to ignore the news, but I find it so depressing sometimes. The worst thing is how much the candidates have to pretty much sell their souls to get elected. Ignorance seems to be the province of the reporters these days, they prefer to just regurgitate whatever they hear, rather than investigate the situation.
Yup, you should e mail that reporter and give him a pice of your mind...Karin

Jonnie I am trying to decide what is really so great about Ky that people love to come here, since it seems we are so uneducated, dont know the ways of the world, like to go barefoot, prefer camping and fishing over a fine dinner, love friends and family over any political figure, rich or poor doesent matter to us, I have decided it must be the DANG KENTUCKY FOOD,Now you can travel the world over but it would be hard to beat Kentucky food, to hoot with the newspeople I bet they would pig out if we saw fit to invite them, personally I have met some real ignorant newspeople

I always have to giggle when I see the news reports because these are the same reporters that come to the Kentucky Derby, eat Kentucky Fried Chicken, Fazolis, Taco Bell, Long John Silvers, Mrs. Smith pies, Little Debbie Snacks, Applebees, and so many other Kentucky-made products. If we are so ignorant, how come are we extremely successful in the national and international business? If we are so dumb, why in the world would they have the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, smack dab in the middle of the state? Oh - and if we are so dumb, then why has one of our colleges been named US World News Best Liberal Arts College to attend year after year? Sometimes you want to reach through the tv and give them a slap like the fishtail on the Captain D's commercial. :)

I for one got stuck in a huge mess at one of the bookstores yesterday. I went in to get a book I've been looking for. I hear a commotion and cheers and I look downstairs and there is Chelsea Clinton reading a book. So weird for me to experience that, but pretty neat.

There was a reporter from ESPN a few months ago that belittled Kentucky and was more concerned about getting a brewsky. The article was complaining about the bars, etc and maybe 2 lines about football. The article got removed after folks complained very heavily on it and I can't remember if he is even with the organization or not anymore.

Sorry to make you concerned, Alee. I didn't intend to stir up a political storm, but I can see how any discussion might have gone that way. Just curious as to whether the ladies posting here were part of the Clinton trend or bucking it.

Speaking of Kentucky, my impression of it as a northerner has always been that it is a beautiful state and rich in culture. It's probably the southern state I most want to visit.

I'm with you Jonni, I hate to be made out badly by the media because of dubious statistics. I don't enjoy being "pigeon holed" at all. I think Kentucky is a fine place, full of diverse people, don't let the media get to you...I think they are getting bored or something and saying whatever just to fill a story

Thanks, Annika...apparently it wasn't just me that felt betrayed. At our office staff luncheon today, it was the first thing that one of the young associate attorney's brought up--how absolutely appalling it was to label all Kentuckians like that...that we were hood wearing, bible thumping mountain folks. That's sure what all the articles I'd read said, too.

Stupid media.
