The place with the cabin didn't work out and my hubby has decided that since we own the 5th wheel, we can get some land and live in it and then build around it...isn't that what I said a while ago and he rejected?? But I digress...
So a friend called yesterday and told us of some land that is closer to the highway but may be too rocky for a septic. When I lived in NE Arizona, it seems that people got creative with their septics, like building UP a spot to sink a tank, like a small hill that was lower than the house. Or even over the side a ridge and then built up with dirt. Not that you could see the septic, it was covered but the land was lava and digging was hard. Like sitting on a rock plate.
Also, I told hubby of something called a Swedish toilet, where everything is incinerated to clean ash but he didn't like that idea too well. Kind of gross, I suspect.
How do you find out about this stuff?? Legally for your area??

We have a high water table here in our area so we have a septic mound that is like a small hill on the side of the property near our woods. It works real well!

I'm not sure about Oregon, but Washington has some pretty strict septic rules. When we built our home in Centralia, our land didn't perc, so we had to hire a septic designer to come out and evaluate the land and draw up a septic design system that would pass with the county. If you are looking at land to buy, at least in WA, you can first do a "perc" test on it. The county will give you the instructions - but what we had to do was dig holes in different areas, a certain depth, and then an inspector came out and poured water in the holes and timed how fast the water disappeared. It either passes or fails - if it passes - no problem you can just put in a standard septic system. If it fails, and you decide you still love the land enough to go the design route, that's when you bring in a designer. At least that was how it was in WA about 10 years ago when we built.

| My dad has purchased a place where there is no perc site. Alternative septics can cost up to 15 thousand dollars! I was looking online at alternative options and found this http://www.compost-toilets.com/standard.html Tell me what you think. My dad called the county and they said they would allow it. For a fraction of the cost! |

Thanks for the info about the composting toilets. I'll let hubby know as "I" think that looks really viable. The prices are kind of off-putting but if it's legal with the county, I'd say it'd be worth it...just to save the hassle.
We are in SC right now and loading in the morning for OR and our days off...then on to look at the land and hopefully, other spots too.
