Alee!!! Thanks so much!! Those are wonderful!!! Living in the east for so long makes you sometimes forget that not all the US looks like the Ohio River valley :) Such beautiful sweeping landscapes. That guy in the field is really kicking up dirt!
I'm fascinated by old outbuildings too, as you can usually tell the "origin" of the original farm owners by the style of buildings they build. That one looks very swedish or germanic to me.
What's the dealio with the castle?

Hi Audrey!
The Palouse is used to define both a geographic and socio-economic location. Geographically speaking, it defines a place of lush, fertile farm country in the Idaho Panhandle and South-Eastern Washington State. It was formed in the last ice age when a glacial dam in the mountains close to Missoula MT burst over a short time. The caused a massive amount of water to be channeled through the mountain passes to wash over the low country to the south. When looking down at the rolling hills of the Palouse from airplanes or helicopters you can the obvious water pattern (think of silt in the gutter or in a stream and how it forms those distinctive ripples). The silt that was deposited when the glacial dam burst was high in nutrients as it was the sediment scraped off of the topsoil of Canada and Montana. It is one of the most fertile regions in the world- growing everything from grain to beans to hay.
As far as a socio-economic location, the Palouse is mostly rural with a few larger towns but no great cities.

A Doctor here in town promised his wife that he would build her a castle if she helped put him through Med School. It has a cool silohette of dragons in front of a faux draw bridge and I have heard they have a hand carved couch that looks like a sleeping dragon inside. What a great house, eh? I would LOVE to have one like it someday!

Alee, we have one in Versailles, Kentucky, only not with such a happy ending...It's HUGE and the guy built it for his fiance who dumped him and broke his heart--it sat unfinished for years and then he remarried and it's going to be an "event" place.
I surely love those aerial photos. What an incredible place to live!!!!

Hi Jeannie-
I wasn't raised around any castles- unless you consider "Castle Rock" a castle ;)
The castle is in Moscow, ID and I didn't move here until 2002. And yes! I would choose a farmhouse over a castle...but can a castle be a farmhouse? 'Cause I really like the idea of a castle! :D
I love the area I was raised at though. Beautiful sweeping prairies, huge mountains. A rough land for sure, but even more beautiful because of that.
