Okay, I can't tell if I am crazy or if it is true but I notice that when I buy different brands of milk some taste funny or smell different. I have come to only like the Fastco (store brand) 1% milk. If I buy the more expensive like Swiss Valley or even just the Wal-mart brand it just tastes/smells off to me. I don't know if it is just because I am pregnant or what but was wondering if anyone else who buys milk notices the same with different brands?

I notice a difference in different brands. It's not just you. I wont say it tastes 'off' to me, but different in different brands. Maybe it's the cows they get it from or the processor. Who knows. There is one brand down here, an expensive top brand name (coburg) that I cannot stand..it tastes aweful to me.

I rarely drink a glass of store milk..I don't like it very much.....but when Mona is in milk I drink a glassful every day..and the kids drink more too. Don't get me wrong..we still go through a gallon a day of store milk..but with fresh milk it zips up closer to 2 gallons a day.
To answer your question..yes...I can tell the difference in brands..just from the smell..and my kids notice too.

Cows and goats on different feeds will taste different. Also there are several ways to pasteurize milk and each process can make the milk taste different as well. I have noticed this as well. Sometimes there is a really creamy taste and sometimes there is an almost grassy aftertaste.

I used to be allergic to milk and I can clearly remember when I was little when my family let me have a little at dinner one time just to see what I thought of it- It was maybe an ounce or less. I drank it and said "MMMM! Yuck!" That gallon of milk had the grassy after taste. I still am not overly fond of THOSE gallons!

I have noticed that even within one brand the milk varies.

Commercial milk and ice cream made dd sick every time and for years we thought she was lactose intolerant. When I switched to organic milk last year, all of sudden, no more problem! I won't buy anything else. If I can't afford it that week, we go without. I will never go back to the commercial stuff again.

Milk is our big splurge product -- I buy local pasturized non-homogenized whole milk which costs a ridiculous amount of money, but is like a dessert. I love having the cream available for cooking, I love the taste. We don't do much refined sugar, and this milk totally satisfies my sweets craving.

Anyway, it's been brought up that cow's feed will completely change the taste of milk, and in factory milk production "taste tests" are conducted to adjust the feed to produce the milk that tastes like what the consumer expects. When my husband was growing up, they would just skip drinking the milk when spring onions were on, since the milk from their cow would be too oniony for the kids :)

So it's definitely not your imagination.

Best,

Robin

Not at all. I know for a fact (it's not just in my head) that 2% conventional milk tastes like nonfat organic milk. I've heard rumors that conventional milk is always watered down. When I first started buying organic milk I made the transition from whole-fat conventional to 2% organic milk. The 2% organic was just as creamy, if not more so, than the whole-fat conventional. It's because the cows are so much happier.

By the way, Monsanto is trying to outlaw the "non rBGH" labels, claiming that it prevents farmers from "using the technology available to them." If this goes to a ballot, please vote no! We should be allowed to make the choice of whether we consume rBGH!

I know we all live in different parts of the country and in some areas products are common and in other areas don't seem to exist. So, here is my question, What is the name of the organic milk you buy at the grocery store? Have you heard of a brand named "Promised Land"? they don't claim organic on the label but instead claim 'no artificial hormones' and claim all their cows are pasture fed. I have to say it does have a better taste than regular brand milk. But is it believable?

I stopped drinking cow's mile 4 years ago after discovering almond milk!

It's very mild. It comes shelf stable in 1/2 gallon paper containers, so there's no wastage. AND best of all, no sour milk smell with the last few drops in the bottom of my glass.

Personally, when I'm able to get to PCC Market (Puget [Sound] Consumer Coop), I buy organic milk from small local dairy farms. Usually from one of the following:
Sea Breeze Farm (there's a definite taste difference, and it's the best milk I've ever had) http://www.seabreezefarm.net/
Dungeness Valley Creamery (unpasteurized, raw milk, great for making cheese) http://www.dvcreamery.com/

These are my local options. Try finding a small-scale dairy farmer in your area, and offer to buy a set amount each week, like a CSA share (Community Supported Agriculture), or go to http://www.localharvest.org/ and search for farms near you.
