thought of your darling Mona when I saw the picture..and can't imagine anyone giving up a lovely cow like that..let alone all those wonderful farm animals. lots of alpacas..I was surprised. I guess they didn't do as well in the show rings or something..they sure had some cute ones.
I thought I'd mention it as an option for someone wanting something like the alpacas for fiber..or even a good jersey cow, or goats,sheep.
The adoption fees on the alpacas were only $400 which of course is much cheaper than the going rates.
yeah..I hope that jersey gal finds a home.

It makes me soooo sad to see animals in shelters, but I suppose they are a good thing. The animals are fed and cared for, kept from the elements, AND they get new "Forever" homes!! (most of the time)
I would SO love to adopt that Jersey. I have ALWAYS wanted one (or three!) but I don't think they'd let her on the New York to California flight!!!! (lol) ~~~Tracy |

I think it's kind of ridiculous to offer a "Milk Cow" as a pet ONLY, especailly if she is perfectly sound. Most people have no use for a cow that is not productive. They are large animals requiring quite a bit of hay each day or at least a large pastured area. Though I wouldn't have a problem keeping her as a pet, my HUSBAND would!
I also think it's a bit short sighted (AND wishful thinking) for the Shelter to think someone is going to "ADOPT" a cow and NOT breed it! Especailly such a beautiful animal and one so young. Though I have to wonder about her "unique personality." To ME that screams DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH!!!! Hope she finds a home nonetheless. ~~~ Tracy |

Tracy, though I can understand your point of view, in many cases, these animals have been rescued from abusive cases and cases where their bodies have undergone undue stresses. In these cases, lots of rescuers don't feel that the animals should be kept in production, where their bodies continue to undergo these stresses. My thoughts are: if you want a regular producing animal, go out and pay full price for one, instead of the much reduced cost that many of these animals are adopted at ($100-$200 for a cow? Bargain!)
It also makes no sense to "rescue" these animals and then put them in very similar situations that they might have come from. But, that's my two cents. Shelters vary. Cracker box palace is way upstate here...I don't know what their policy is, but Catskill Animal Sanctuary and Farm Sanctuary, also in this state, will not allow breeding. Not here to argue, just point out policies that exist, in case people are looking for producing animals.....

perhaps if interested each shelter may/may not have a clause in place in regards to suitable farms..but I dunno.
I thought it was neat.."if" someone could give them a home it would be nice to do...but of course being able to "earn" their keep is also a necessity on a farm.
I stumbled across the listing actually while looking at a rabbit rescue site.
