Aww c'mon, now, Ann. Be honest about Michigan's birdlike mosquitoes!!! I remember them well at Interlochen, right about May when we were all shedding our winter garments and wearing short shorts and tank tops. Gotta love those woods!!!!

Ok, I admit.... my husband did build a sunroom instead of fixing a deck... just because of the mosquitos. A mosquito inspired sunroom - how warped is that :)!

jennifer .. that's a scream! after my walk in the woods last night .. ending up with various and asundry TICKS embedded here and there on my body .. you might want to change that to TICKS

one of the funniest bumper stickers i ever saw was a handfull of years ago when we visited Moscow, Idaho .. it said:

WELCOME TO IDAHO .. THE TICK FEVER STATE!

our friends there said .. "THAT should keep the population and visitors down!" xo

I LOVE that idea!

Though, you will never believe what I'm doing next Saturday. Going to a Derby Party - in Michigan. A friend of ours has one every year, and this is the first year that we are able to go. Any tips? It is all foreign to me.

Would love to have the real debut be next year with you!

Oh, Ann--I see a large beautiful hat in your future!! How much fun--a Derby party is a Derby party--Michigan or Kentucky or Nevada..

Janice (Miss Bee Haven and the Belle of Louisville herself) will have some great suggestions, too, but I can't go without my Juleps, or my Derby Pie. If you'd like the recipe, let me know. It's yummy for sure. We also make little finger sandwiches--pimento cheese and benedictine, and also olive nut spread. Oh, benedictine!!! Red roses in a silver vase, and watch ALL the coverage, especially the sad/special interest horse and jockey stories :)

And have fun, girly! Next year, we'll do it Kentucky style :)

I'd love the recipe for Derby Pie. We used to have Derby Pie on the menu of a restaurant that I worked at in Tulsa, OK. It was amazing - but don't know if it would be the same?

Might be...I think everyone has a slight variation...but this is the one in my Curtis Grace cookbook (a well known Kentucky chef)
INGREDIENTS:
3 eggs, lightly beaten
1 c. light corn syrup
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1 c. chopped pecans
1/4 t. salt
1/2 t. vanilla
6 oz. package semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1 9 inch deep dish pie shell, unbaked (I make my own)
PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Mix all ingrediaents and pour into pie shell. Bake for 10 minutes and reduce heat to 350 degrees for 35 minutes more. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Oh gosh - my sweet beloved Derby Pie....haha. Usually they go by different names, but it is still the best tasting pie - behind Jonni's apple pies!
