I am watching the quality of his life slip away - he is slowed down and the nodes are huge. The prednisone did not do anything for him so I am guessing this was pretty far advanced before it surfaced in the nodes. It is the most humane think I can do for him, even though it is tearing me up inside. I had one other Corgi, Emma Jean that I loved like Bagel - I lost her a day before her 7th birthday to a third degree heart block -it was one of the worst days of my life.
Little Bagel got along with my shepherd, June who died last year of cancer also - she will be happy to see her little friend. I will miss him so much. Please pray for him

Hi Kathy-

What a hard day for you, both to make the decision and to go with him tomorrow. My heart and thoughts will be with both of you.

Thanks Alee - put in some prayers for hubby too, his heart and chest are bothering him and he is covered in tick bites. My poor nerves are not doing too well over in the Enchanted Wood. I just hope that Bagel understands that I am doing this cause I love him so much.

Kathy- He will. We had to put my lab to sleep last year. She got sick very fast and I could swear I could see her thanks in her eyes as she fell asleep. The don't want to live in pain or indignity any more than we do.

I hope your husband starts feeling better!

I'm so sorry for your loss, Kathy. I had to put my Shih Tzu, Sukey to sleep last fall due to advanced cancer also. Like Alee said, you can see the look of thanks in their eyes and you will know you did the right thing.

All of us pet lovers feel what you are going through. I lost my heart & soul Emily (13 yr old dane) over a yr ago & still get a twinge when I see her pic or think of her. She died at home, I knew it was happening & I held her & sang a song to her that one of our pastors taught us "Sanctuary" I sang it to her all the time & she knew it, so I think she was somewhat comforted. That along with many "I love you's"

Dearest Kathy,
You are a good mother to your dear loving Bagel. My heart goes out to you both during this hard time. Every pet owner needs to be like you. Sometimes we are selfish to let our pets suffer for too long. You are doing the right thing. You too will see him again one day. I know my Ruger will be playing with him when they meet. You are both in my prayers. My dogs are my children and they always give back so much more even in the hardest of times.

I took a sleeping pill but know that I will not sleep well tonight. It always makes me feel bad to sleep when something like this is going on the next day. He perked up a little but he is looking for me - I will go and hold him tonight. I am sure my vet will be honest with me tomorrow - she is such a good vet and I am lucky to have found her. I can't stand to see anything/one suffer, it just bothers me. I watched my dad dwindle away to cancer, then my mom and she suffered so much she was begging to die, then in 04 I lost my sister to cancer, another brutal death. Cancer is ruthless and cruel.
My mind feels so scattered lately with worry - I am having such difficulty concentrating and I need to. I have an article due on May 5th and am not even half through - It is like I try to do something and I just sit and stare. I know I should be up in my little cabin just not doing anything for a few hours, just "being" and feeling my spirit return - I feel so disconnected it at times frightens me - I call it the "feeling of impending doom" - Perhaps when I get over this hurdle, I will gain back some of my mental capabilities, I sure hope so as without them, I am not worth much.

Kathy,

I'm sorry. I know this will be a hard day for you. I've been thinking about you and Bagel the past few days. I know you will do what is best. And please take time out for taking care of you. Please go to your cabin to rest and renew, don't worry about that deadline just now. I'll be thinking about and praying for peace and healing for you, your husband, and Bagel. Like I said in the other post if you need anything, even if it's a listening ear please let me know.

Love and Hugs

Kathy, my heart goes out to you. All of us who have had companion animals know the heartrending pain you are going through. I firmly believe that our animals are genuinely grateful when they are in pain and we do the humane thing and ease it. I will be thinking and praying for Bagel, you and your husband. Please take good care of yourself during this difficult time.

Kathy, I am so sorry that you have to make this decision...I know with my Lily, I just kept "hoping" that she would drift away in her sleep and all the pain would be gone, but in the end, it was best that I help her go with ease...but I struggled so much with it! Kathy, you know in your heart it's time--give him big love from the Lynch clan. Take care of you, too.

I am thinking about both of you today. I am so sorry. It is always an awful choice to have to make, but often one that is very neccesary and often the kindest thing we can do. Even if it is the hardest. I am so sorry

It was a long night but in the morning I felt at peace with my decision. The dr checked him over first and the lymph nodes in his belly were enlarged also - he went to sleep with grace, bravado and dignity, something I could only hope to do myself someday. My little buddy is romping in heaven with all his pals. I shall miss my little buddy.

Oh Kathy, I hope you will have time in your cabin this weekend to reflect upon the good times you shared with Bagel, and to grieve him properly. Good luck also with your article's deadline; again, hopefully some time spent in your special place will bring forth the focus and clarity you will need to finish your article. I am thinking happy thoughts of Bagel romping and playing with friends, both old and new.

Kathy, have you ever read a poem called "A Dog's Plea?" My dear grandfather, who died several years ago from a very long bout of Lukemia, ADORED dogs and never had less than 4 at a time underfoot, gave me a copy of the poem many years ago. It's been a comfort to me many times over the years when I've lost one of my dogs-- one of them the same as your sweet Bagel. It's kind of long, so please forgive me ladies for taking up so much space-- but, here it is---
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick; for though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And my friend, when I am very old, (or very sick-- not a part of the poem) and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.--- I do not know who the author of that poem was, but obviously they once loved a dog (or two!) VERY MUCH!! My prayers are with you in your time of grief and know that we are all thinking of you. Many blessings to you and your family--- Tracy

Here is a poem one of the girls at the vet clinic gave me - she made sure I got it before I put him down.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you will do what must be done
For this - the last battle - can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
You love and friendship must stand the test.
We have so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me until the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
it is a kindness you do for me.
Although my tail its last wag waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close - we two - these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
