This is our king snake that lives near the pond. In warm weather he stays in that hole in the tree. A little over a week ago I was walking to the pond and just happen to see him in the tree. He has really grown.
We don't bother him because King Snakes are good about eating the venomous snakes.Plus he non-venomous.

I understand the benefits of king snakes but that would give me the creeps! He is HUGE! I haven't any seen snakes yet this year. We ahve had tons of flooding in our area so there are probably millions of them in my back yard cause it seems to be the only dry spot around for miles! Ugh! Gives me the heebiejeebies just thinking about it! We had a snake get in our house about 2 years ago! I thought I was going to die and was SOOOOO glad when my husband found it!

OMG, I'd leave that fellow alone, too!
I did see a snake sunning himself last weekend, and took a photo of it. I will have to post it here since we don't know what type it is. Sort of grayish color, about 3-4 feet long, which looked big to me until I saw this photo~

What a beautiful snake! I love the beneficial non-poisonous snakes. I will take them hands down over the other kinds!

Wow, he REALLY is the King, ins't he? We have black rat snakes around here that are his length (haven't seen my buddy this season yet), but I just let them do their thing and I do mine :)..Very cool photo!

What a great picture! i love snakes. At our old house we had a collapsed bit of stone wall by our house. and the garter snakes lived in there, they would sun themselves on the rocks. The only drawback was that occasionally one of my cats would bring one inside for a playmate, the kids loved it, but I always rescued them and took them back to the great outdoors. When i was little I lived in
arizona for a while and i remember seeing lots of exciting snakes there! One of the benefits of cold weather living is no poisonous snakes....Karin

I think snakes are pretty too. But we also have a lot of rattlesnakes here. Now those are pretty but I sure don't want to get that close to them. When we first moved here we had 3 dogs. All three got bitten by the same rattlesnake one day. I call the vet and he told me that if the dogs hadn't died in 20 minutes, they had a good chance of making it. None of them died but the one that was 12 years old, Rover, almost did. The vet gave him some antibiotics for the wound area and Rover recovered after a few weeks. That was enough to make me watch out for rattlesnakes every time I walk.

| I'm really impressed that you know this particular snake and his habits. When I see a snake around, it's kind of a one-time deal. Reminds me of the snake that lives in the stone wall in those Madeleine L'Engle books. |

Great photo, Pam! We saw our first - also a king snake but not as big! - sunning on a log across our flooded creek. Also saw a dead rough green snake (killed by a bulldozer). They are SO beautiful. I've been looking for a big black rat snake that frequented our barn last year but haven't seen it yet. I love snakes - they're gorgeous, fascinating creatures. Copperheads are some of the loveliest snakes of all. But, I admit I don't like being surprised by them, and cottonmouths give me the mega-shivers.

Wow that is a grandaddy snake! We have rattlesnakes, found seven the first year we lived here. But we got animals and are very active outside and that keeps them away. We do have a large bull snake living in our pasture. My husband sees him around when he's on the tractor. But, we leave him alone, they are non-venomous and eat rattlers! So, far I haven't seen any snakes but it did get up to 100 degrees today so I'm sure they'll be coming out!

| We have an 8 foot rat snake that comes every year. I haven't seen him yet though. I don't like him unless I see him leaving, despite the fact that he's a good snake to have around. Last year I left him alone until he was coiled up in the frame of my front window. Yuck. Husband came home RIGHT THEN from work and removed him across the road. |

Great picture! We saw a bright garter snake a week or so ago...yellow and black stripes lengthwise. He was swimming. Didn't get a picture. It's so good to get out and see spring after such a hard, long winter.

In northcentral Idaho, rattlers are about our only poisonous snake. Otherwise, bullsnakes and garden varieties. I can handle the latter ones if I see them first. If I see them when they're moving fast, they make me squeek and dance! I used to see them alot in the hay fields when I was a kid. Now in my flowerbeds occasionally.
Where we live, on our side of the river, there is about 1 mile upriver and 1 miles downriver and as far back as you can go where we've never seen a rattler, unless it was hauled over in rock or once one had just swam the river. And that's like three generations, no rattlers in our part. I think it's a little colder here than they like it. But across the river - oh yeah. And I'm careful where I walk over there. Haven't seen any this year (have yet to get out into the wilds), but I used to have this great picture of myself holding a lil ol' garter snake that I found in a stream flowing into Lake Kachess. In the picture, it looks like we're just having a little face-to-face chat. Cute little bugger. I miss my garter snake buddies that lived around the house I lived in 15 years ago.

I have had several run-ins with snakes already this spring. On Mother's day, I was weeding and got near a sleeping rattler (which rattled me not the snake...hubby came and relocated it deep into the sagebrush away from me and our neighbors). I was planting recently and came across an very large king snake and today i was watering and encountered a small garter snake. I hate snakes, even more than Indiana Jones does, and snakes are in all of my recurring nightmares from childhood. It is always a tough day for me when i have a snake encounter. It is part of being an herb farmer and i am trying to toughen up to it but, I admit, this is really hard.
