My husband had gone to bed about 9:30 and I was on the phone talking to my mom and he suddenly was YELLING for me from the bedroom so I got off the phone and went to see what he wanted. He was writhing in pain and had thrown up ....and wanted to go to the emergency room...so off we went at about 10pm...oldest daughter got woke up and told she was in charge and to go back to bed. (right..she was up when we got back) Anyway..long story short...kidney stones...yikes...he had to have a catscan and all...there was one just on the edge of his bladder. His pain is gone now..it was bad again right after the catscan...and the doc said it just needs to pass now. WE were gone right at 2 hours and the hospital is 15 miles away..so that wasn't a bad trip I guess. It makes me even more grateful that with his new job his insurance is alot better...this won't be cheap. Anyway..he is off to bed and seems to be comfortable for now. I plan to sleep on the couch. I am not risking waking him up. AND the bedroom smells like puke..even though I cleaned it up. It will get deep cleaned and aired tomorrow. It was just the floor..thankfully not the bedding. But still.
That was my excitment for the night.

Jenny good thing you are used to be up most of the night anyway! Glad all is resolved and you know what the problem is and was. I understand they are a very painful thing to have. Hope he is feeling better soon.

The Latest Way to Treat and Prevent Kidney Stones: Drink Lemonade

May 24, 2006 – If life gives you kidney stoneskidney stones, make lemonade.
New research shows that lemonade is an effective -- and delicious -- way for kidney-stone-prone people to slow the development of new stones.
"When treating patients in our kidney stone center, we put everyone on lemonade therapy," says Steven Y. Nakada, chair and professor of urology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Nakada spoke during a news conference on kidney stone research at this week's annual meeting of the American Urological Association in Atlanta.
Stones as Painful as Childbirth
If you've ever passed a kidney stone, you won't forget the sudden, intense pain in your flank. Some patients compare the pain with that of childbirth.
Kidney stones form when urine in the kidney becomes supersaturated with stone-forming salts -- and when the urine doesn't contain enough stone-preventing substances. One of these substances is citrate.
For people prone to stones, doctors usually prescribe potassium citrate. It can be taken as a pill or in liquid form. But lemon juice is full of natural citrate.
When made into low-sugar or sugar-free lemonade, Nakada and colleagues found, lemon juice increases the amount of citrate in the urine to levels known to inhibit kidney stones. It doesn't work quite as well as potassium citrate. But for patients who'd rather avoid yet another medication, lemonade is an attractive alternative.
"The trend is going to be, if you can make a change in your diet and avoid medications, you are going to try to do that," Nakada said. "We see lemonade therapy as playing a role."
David Kang, a medical student and researcher at the Duke University Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center, found that this role can play for a long time. Kang and colleagues followed 12 kidney-stone patients who had been on lemonade therapy for up to four years.
Over the time they drank lemonade they had a lower burden of kidney stones and appeared to form kidney stones at a slower rate than they did before starting lemonade therapy. Kang says a large-scale clinical trial will be needed to confirm these findings.
"None of the patients needed medical intervention over a mean treatment period of four years," Kang said.
How Much Lemonade?
Lemonade also does something else needed by people prone to kidney stoneskidney stones. It helps them pass a lot of urine, said conference moderator Marshall Stoller, MD, vice chairman of urology and medical director of the urinary stone center at the University of California, San Francisco.
"To reduce kidney stones, you have to increase your fluid intake so that you pass 1.5 to 2 liters of urine a day," Stoller said. "If you live in sunny Atlanta, you may need to drink more than if you live in foggy San Francisco."
To make lemonade, Stoller, Nakada, and Kang recommend mixing 1/2 cup of concentrated lemon juice with 7 cups of water. A sugar substitute may be added to taste. Sugar should be avoided, as the extra calories in sugared lemonade are too much for most people's health.
Diet and Kidney Stones
But lemonade alone isn't the answer to kidney stones. It's only part of a stone-preventing diet.
"First, you should reduce the amount of salt in the diet," Stoller says. "Get rid of the salt shaker at the table. Use a potassium-based salt substitute. If you have a choice of two products, go to the one with less salt. Eat out less -- restaurant food is salty -- and never salt your food before tasting it."
Second on Stoller's stone-prevention diet is eating smaller portions of meat and fish at each meal.
"We are not saying to eat less meat, just eat less at individual meals," he says.
Third, increase fluid intake to where one is passing 1.5 to 2 liters of urine each day.
"Where does lemonade fit in? If you drink and enjoy lemonade, it gives you an additional benefit," Stoller says.

Oh, Jenny...I really feel for him...that's what happened to my boss last year. He came out of the office, looking REALLY ashen and sortof faint and asked me to drive him to the hospital, that he was in immense pain. Then he sort of wilted right before my eyes and fell to the floor. Turns out it was the same thing!
I'm so glad he is resting now--sometimes it can be hard to get sleep, but I bet the painkillers are helping :)
Thinking of you BOTH today--and thanking god it isn't something worse.

My FIL said that kidney stones were the worst pain he has experienced ever in his life; he said he was convinced he was going to die and was making a mental list of who to call to say goodbye to! So sorry for your hubby. I hope it passes quickly.

Oh, Jenny - what a night. Your poor guy! Make him a big pitcher of lemonade and give a kiss or two - and remember, you can tell him that, "This, too, shall pass." (I know, the pain is horrible and it's not really funny, but I just couldn't resist!)

I'm sorry Jenny! My hubby has had a couple of them too! I'm embarreassed to say I wasn't at all symapthetic the first time!!!! I was like-" whtcha belly aching about -I just gave BIRTH!!!" Hugs!

Jenny- I hope he's feeling better. I have had two kidney stones. The one I had when I was pregnant with Sullivan was 6mm which is very big for a kidney stone. I was in the hospital for a week on a morphine drip, so I know exactly what he's feeling. The good news is as soon as the stone is passed, you instantly feel better!

Yep..he passed it this morning and went to work!! The catscan showed another one so he is for sure going to ask about about breaking the other one up. It is still in his kidney I guess. This one was 2.2mm (my gosh Heather.that one was gianormous!!)the doc said the one he still has is 4.4mm so that one will not be good if it ever moves! I have to take the stone in to the hosp lab to be anylized to see if it is the type that can be dissolved.
So...problem over..he is so much better. I don't think I have ever seen him in so much pain!! Not that he has a high threshhold for pain...like most guys he dosn't.
I am going to push the lemonade anyhow. He has been trying not to drink so much soda (at my insistance) and the doctor told him last night that it was really bad for kidney stones..so that may help too.
My bedroom smells so much nicer now.

| Been there done that more times than I care to remember. Very painful, worse than having a baby! I try to keep hydrated and not get thirsty, the specialist I saw once told me that. My naturopath recommends water with lemon in it and I take hydrangea. It is amazing, how things have changed when I had my first one at twelve yrs of age and had major surgery, it was about the size of a navy bean,it had moved from my ureter back into my kidney, a few years later I had a huge on removed that had taken residence in my kidney. I had 3 more major surgeries to remove them, now the dr just keeps a watch on the ones I have, he does not ever want to go in to that right kidney again. Lots of time I just pass sand, still painful. My stones are too hard to break up, my wonderful genes, it is hereditary, I have 3 siblings with the same problem, not as severe as mine. Glad he is feeling better. All I can say is drink lots. Pam |

I hardly ever drink pop anymore- just lots of water or water with sugar free drink mix added in. I was drinking lots of juice until I got gestational diabetes and had to give it up. The doctors and nurses were all surprised at how big my stone was. I was supposed to go back after I had Sullivan and get checked out to see if I have any more, but I haven't yet. I hated my urologist. I have a doctor's appt. on Friday, so I'll probably have her recommend someone else.

So sorry to hear about your husband's nasty experience! My husband used to have that problem too. He's had kidney stones a lot of times and yes, it's awful painful! He's been attack free now for 2 years.
Here's my 2 cents worth about what we've learned that works: yes, drinks lots of juice and water (not sugared drinks or coffee, it adds to the problem) cranberry juice, the kind sweetened with fruit juice (we use Northland) and/or orange juice works for my husband. Also, limiting or not using dairy products like milk and ice cream is what really stopped the attacks. Now before you get all depressed about no ice cream, go check out the frozen desserts made with soy or rice and the wonderful soy milk products there are now (even most grocery stores are carrying them now).
Good luck! There is a lot of good advice here from these wonderful ladies, I hope some of this helps.

Jenny, I've been there and done that with my DH -- twice, about ten years apart. He is now vigilant about keeping up his water intake, although the lemonade is something I didn't know about.
It is very painful indeed; the first time it happened I had to drive him to the ER and I thought he was going to rip the whole dashboard out of our truck, since he was gripping it so hard. As it happened, I had managed to slice open my elbow in the shower earlier that day when one of the porcelain knobs broke off, so I was ace bandaged on one arm where they put stitches and a tetanus shot. When we walked into the ER, the staff looked at me, but I just pointed at him and said No, I am fine, HE's the patient...and DH was in so much pain that he gave a wrong answer when they asked his age during the interview. He knocked ten years off his age and didn't so much as blink about the wrong answer until I piped up and said WHAT? You are 45, not 35! I honestly think he was so wracked with pain that he really didn't know what he was saying.

Jenny, I am so sorry to hear about the kidney stone attack. Thank God your hospital checked him out thoroughly and are watching the other stone. I hope he can take medicine to break it up.
I took hydrangea extract for my kidney as well. It is in tincture form. I would add that to the lemon water. Soda is a big no-no for many reasons, and maybe if hubby gives it up, no more kidney stones ever. I sure hope so.
Glad you got your room refreshed and ready for sleeping again. It's good to have a clean space for resting at night.
