For those of us working girls...does Sunday ever bring that feeling of dread "of Monday"? It's been happening for me for sometime--and I HATE it. I used to feel happy about coming to work...so this morning, I woke up and hopped out of bed, determined to come into work and attack things head on, things I've neglected (like monotonous filing-blech) and little organization projects to keep me together, and now I'm here, and though I'm really trying, I seem to just....well, hate it. It's like pulling teeth to get me to talk with these clients. I just don't really have the empathy I used to, nor do I want to extend the effort. That's bad, right?

I've been here 8 1/2 years, and that's a long time in a job for me, because it used to be every 3 I'd get burned out and move on. Maybe, I'm burned out. I really enjoy my boss, but even he, lately, gets under my skin.

It's a bad year to look for jobs, I know...so I'm trying to make myself happy here, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Bah. Thanks for listening.

Jonni-

I am so sorry that you have the Monday blues. I know how jobs can get like that though. It's hard because on one hand you want to be excited to go to work, and on the other hand as we get older we have more responsibilities and job security sure is important- especially in today's job market.

Could you take a few vacation days? Maybe even splurging on some flowers or some sort of something pretty to grace you desk might help break the doldrums? *hugs* Hope things perk up for you soon!

I feel that way when work is stressful. It's just how I used to feel when I was a kid and facing the fact that I had to go back to school on Monday.

But it sounds like you are kind of in a rut at work. Not stressed out so much as fed up. Maybe some new challenges or new responsibilities would get you feeling engaged again?

I am right with you. Hang in there.

DH is still w/o a job and may have to work for his brother in Portsmouth (which is right now, not the place that we want to live at)which is 2 hours from our home in the Columbus area (this would be very temporary). He may have a bite an a couple of things but nothing yet has surfaced. It is really tough out there...and I really am scared to leave the job I do have right now to get another one that will probably be the same as the one I do have. The good thing is, I am part-time right now, so I don't have to deal with all of the crazy crud that goes on in my office with 12 guys and 5 assistants.

In one way or another, every work place has it's ups and downs, but after so many years at one particular place (like 8 years in my case), it is time to move on to something new.

Again, hang in there and hope that you can find something that you enjoy and to manage your stressful feelings with your current work situation:)

Yup, Jonni - I am feeling your pain today as well...having taken off three glorious days last week, which helped a lot, but made it all that much more difficult to get back to it this morning. I go through those phases as well, and usually they will pass. Hopefully you'll get your second wind soon.

Can you take some vacation days, or can you work from home once in a while (on Mondays, perhaps?) to break up the routine?

(Hugs) Jonni. I always suspected we had a lot in common, but after reading this I'm sure of it. Starting Sunday evening I have that sinking feeling too and also a 'sense' of dread most mornings. I really don't dislike what I do here. There are other things that are contributing to the way I'm feeling right now too that fall along the same lines.

I think some of mine has to do with the fact that most of the day goes by and I don't see or talk to anyone unless someone calls or comes in the office. Sometimes it's a blessing to have solitude, I actually prefer to work alone, but other times it can feel downright lonely. I'm the kind of person that likes to get my office duties done quickly, unless it's something I don't enjoy-then I procrastinate a bit. But after my work is done I'm left with the rest of the day and unless there's a new project I'm left to think.

Well, Lady, this is why I left my last job and work for myself...which is NOT easy and not necessarily as money making as before, but I know what you mean. Wow! 8 + years is a long time. I thought I stuck around for a long time, which was 7 years. Well, have you thought of looking for another job on your off time? I'm not saying it's easy...but I'm sending big hugs out!

Oh Jonni!! I feel for ya!!! I will be honest, for the first time in my life of working, I feel like I actually fit at work and with my career. I am also a little higher on the supervisor scale than I had been in the past, so the helps. I think supervisors set the tone for the office, so it is nice to go in happy and see it trickle down. Believe me, I have had some humzinger jobs that stunk but I needed the paycheck. Can you take a little vacation? Or offer to work an extra hour a day, taking Fridays off. I have done that before and it helps.

Cheers,
Heather

I guess I'm glad to see I'm not the only one...though it is sad that we are all, for one reason or another, not too thrilled about our jobs. I like the people I work with, but when I roll over in my mind all of the things I'm NOT currently digging on (benefits...it was hard enough with a $3000 deductible plan, now they've upped the deductible to $4000...YEAH, that makes planning a family easier!), and we haven't had a raise in sometime. It's hard on small businesses, this economy, but I do a lot of work and I simply feel like there isn't much reward for it. I was never very fond of the "corporate" world either, but it does have its advantages as far as larger group plans go.

I'm thinking I'll take a few days vacation and see if it helps. I updated my resume this morning, and am thinking I'll post it tonight just to get my feelers out there. You never know what might pop up. At this point, benefits are really important to us.

Thanks, girls. At least I know there's solidarity somewhere :)

Hey Jonni
I saw a little blurb somewhere on the internet, maybe a Yahoo headline, that said something like-if you can't get a raise ask for other benefits, i/e more flex time, work from home, or more vacation time, something to that effect. .. Is that a possibility? I complain about my job too, but it really is great to work largely from home(except whenI actually see the houses).. I was able to get up & feed animals, make coffee, put in a load of laundry & finish 2 reports, & I am still in the sweats I slept in(don't tell my clients..HEHE)

Jonni,
I know exactly what you mean. I was promised some opportunites for Jan 09 and now i'm told they may or may not materialize in 2 years. On Sun night I get start fretting and it's so hard to come in without an attitude on Monday. I would put out my feelers if I were you. Even if nothing immediately comes available, you are taking some action.

oh jonni .. this too shall pass. i think we all get 'burned out' from time to time .. but the very fact that you like the people you work with .. and you ARE getting benefits (even though they may seem small now .. and times, are indeed .. tough right now for our economy) they will add up in the long-run.

i think 'spring fever' has a lot to do with 'monday blues' .. there are so many things to do .. places to visit .. adventures to be had! BUT .. if you enjoy the people and can find 'challenge' in your work (yessss! sometimes that takes some deep looking) .. but hopefully, you are doing some 'good' for people in need.

maybe change your 'routine' in the way you do some things ... and 'look for the blessing' .. make sure you enjoy some fun 'lunch-hours' with friends or find somewhere to quickly go or a craft you enjoy to do.

i was soooooooooo BLESSED to work directly across the street from the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C. .. so there was NEVER a boring lunch hour with all that culture right there!

I also gave 'crafting' and 'dolly making' classes to some of the women at work a couple summers during our lunch houro .. that was a ball!

AND oh my! the stories i have to tell of 'sunbathing' on the ROOF of the Department of Justice while watching the 'handsome guys' play basketball. (i was lucky to have lived through that era .. eventually they closed the roof for security purposes). AND .. we have a GYM in our building .. spent 'some lunch hours' there too!

I ALWAYS travel with a good book or some special magazines .. no matter where i go .. and i would sometimes prepare a 'picnic' for one .. and sit in a park and enjoy my pb&j sammy and book sitting on a quilt under a tree! (ha! i remember one day doing this on the lawn of the Smithsonian .. and the underground WATER SPRINKLERS came on and i ran laughing .. and soaking wet .. back to the office!

Are you close enough to any Cincinnatti museums that you could visit during lunch time? You are near the river .. that must be a nice place to visit for an hour. And you do have some nice restaurants nearby .. although . i must admint a picnic alone or with friends was always my most favorite over restaurants .. and D.C. has LOTS of fine restaurants. (we usually saved those for AFTER work).

I do remember working for a short time for some friends who were in 'private practice' .. it was a CRIMINAL practice .. and i MUST admit .. i did not stay there long. LOVED the people .. but as much as i truly realize the everyone is entitled to a trial .. and INNOCENT until proven GUILTY. well .. after reading their 'files' .. i knew in my heart of hearts they were 'guilty' .. i think back especially of the 'murder' cases and the one that sickened me the most was the 'child pornography' cases .. and i had to be NICE to these clients .. even after knowing all that was in their files. I went BACK to work for Uncle Sam .. .LOVED working for the Government in D.C.

Someday, i'll head up that-away and kidnap you for a fun lunchtime. (i'll be heading that way May 15 (heading for a few days in Toledo with the grandkids). i drop honey hunk off at the airport .. then head for LaGRANGE .. gotta' stop at LaGRANGE for my 'junkin' fix!! should be in Cinci area late afternoon .. perhaps you could take a 'coffee break' .. or even 'play hookey' for a couple hours. T'would be grande fun to finally meet you!

hang in there kiddo .. i promise you .. the 'bad' days will pass. xo, frannie

Thanks, all....for lunch today, I ate my tuna salad and finished up some projects then drove to the historic Linden Grove Cemetery and looked at all the gravestones from 1800 on. Really lovely old place and I think, maybe I'll walk there on my lunchour's when it gets warmer (if it ever gets warmer!). Then I went to the Dairy Queen and got a dilly bar--wanted butterscotch but settled for chocolate :)

It's hard at times to find blessings in the legal field...you can get very jaded with all the things people sue for...sometimes I just think, gosh, "let it go". And, folks appear greedy and I'm just "over that" part of it--I start to wonder if anyone is really happy!!!

Well, this Monday is almost done, and there is still more to do....
Wishing (all of us) a better Tuesday :)

Jonni,
I so feel the same this week. I am thankful for my job, but the days have been dragging on so and everyone is getting on my very last nerve!! We have been in a transition at my work the company has been making major cuts and organization changes. It just drives my nerves crazy not knowing what the next change may be. I work in a help center so I get to answer the phone nonstop and “fix” everyone’s problems and be super friendly about it. (Sometimes I think terribly mean things and then worry that I thought them so hard that it might have “shown” thru other times I feel like I just want to scream and throw a tantrum)
I too have been thinking of taking some vacation time. I have a day tomorrow but I am taking my mother to the doctor so that really isn’t a vacation. I just keep on keepin’ on and thinking that when the weather warms up and we see more sun, I’ll feel better.

Hey there Miss Jonni...here is something to think about on the bright side - our little gathering this Sunday. :o)

I know that in the past with especially one of the jobs I held, I was constantly bored to death. I just felt like it wasn't a challenge for me, thus it made me bored. Maybe you could ask them for a new challenge, add something to what you are doing to further your career.

Good luck on finding a job. It's a tough market, but with your skills and background, you shouldn't have no problem. However - do not leave this one until you have one lined up.

*Hugs* to you!
