when honey hunk and i did our mississippi paddle boat cruise last summer .. we stopped at a southern town along the river (can't remember the name of it) .. and i WALKED to town .. STRAIGHT UP .. for what seemed FIVE miles ... but at the top .. i found this jewel of a store .. GRANDMOTHER'S BUTTONS. it was so incredibly lovely and filled with the most beautiful and delightful BUTTON jewelry .. and gorgeous buttons to buy!
The owner, Susan Davis, wrote this wonderful book (with instructions) on how to make magnificent jewelry from BUTTONS (mostly vintage!)

i also got this lovely cloth 'bag' to carry my book (and buttons) in:

I just discovered the book you found "Grandmothers Buttons" and it is full of the most wonderful projects. I have thousands of buttons and have been waiting for some really cool ideas to make things. I am asking my friends to go together and get me this book for my birthday (July). I am also copying a button bracelet that was purchased in Sun Valley, not by me, that is basically a scrunchie with buttons sewed on and the seller was getting $45 a bracelet. Did you see that MaryJane is also going to be adding button jewelry to her product line? She (MaryJane) is on the cover of CHOICE magazine and there is the best article about her, I think that is where I read this about the button jewelry, or it was under products on the Home site. I will check out this other button book as well!
Some people look for happiness, others create it!

oh i'm so happy maryjane will be adding button jewelry to her line .. i wish i could find a source for beautiful vintage buttons nearby where i could go and pick and choose! my button book was $25. gosh .. if you could just get five family and friends to donate $5. .. you'd have that book ... and i wouldn't think that would be too hard to do!
gosh .. so many fun 'projects' to do in this lifetime .. one should NEVER be bored!

I wanted to make refrigerator magnets out of vintage buttons one year for Christmas presents. I want to tell you that as a seasoned e-bayer I have never seen a more cutthroat area that the vintage button section there on e-bay! The buyers were ruthless! LOL! I've never seen anything like it. I got my buttons and I made some adorable magnets but I have never gone back to buy my buttons on ebay. The expereince was too traumatic! To this day, my left eye still start twitching every time I think about it! LOL!

Button buying on eBay is brutal, especially for big collections. I managed to outbid on an estate collection a few years back. Think I ended up paying about $100, but got a very large box with many antique and vintage buttons in divided bins. Some had value tags on them that were way outdated, so I did get a huge bargain. Think last time I counted, there were over 20 gallon jars plus that collection and several storage totes full. Enough for several lifetimes. I have a button value book and it's amazing that some are worth more than I'd pay for a new dress...if I ever bought a new dress :) Ronna |

I've always wondered about some buttons I have from a great aunt...she was a seamstress, and they're still on an large, maybe 5 x 8 card with description, company and order information. They are all made of jet, which was very popular in victorian and edwardian clothing and jewlery. I've always wanted to use them in some way but have been too afraid to remove them from their original card.

Hey Ronna, Do you ever sell any of your buttons? I need to get some big ones in different colors. They just need to be pretty, not necessarily valuable. Let me know!

i can often find the 'typical' ones .. some newer .. some older .. by the jar-full at antiques shoppes for less than $10 per jar (sometimes as little as $5. per jar!) i have lots of those .. and often use them on my dollies .. it's those 'spensive' unique ones like in Grandmother's Button Book that are so dear (and dearly priced too!) i know i have a few more button jewelry books around her somewhere .. jus' haven't come across them yet!

Oh Stephanie I am so jealous!
If any of you girls have the big rounder buttons in a variety of colors with 2 or more matching that you'd be willing to part with, lewt me know, will ya'? I need them for my vintage repro aprons.

Linda, I'll gather up whatever I come across that are big and colorful for you. Not sure how far I'll get into the sewing room this weekend, but will try to get at them. How big do you need...an inch across or ???? Had a phone call yesterday from the senior thrift shop in Carson City, she's holding some for me. The good ones are getting harder to find, but I take them all as long as they're not overpriced. Never know what treasure might be in with the shirt buttons :) When I was helping my friend out at the antique mall last year, bought a pint jar full of very old wonderful buttons for $3 and the manager was really pissy. She asked if I knew there was about $20 worth and there and said she didn't have time to go around and see what the vendors had underpriced...but I did! I'll email you when I find some that might be of use and take photos for you. I lived in your area as a kid. Venice, Mar Vista, Culver City and my parents had their boat at Marina del Rey for a long time. Ronna Ronna |

Thanks Ronn! I'm excited to see what you come up with! Yep, about an inch sounds perfect.
