I have a very bothersome varicose vein in my right leg. I thought I remember reading somewhere about a vitamin I could take or an herbal remedy and I can't find the source. Does anyone know of anything more natural that could help me?

Oh boy, do I hate varicose veins! I have a ton of them, my legs look like they're about 40 years older than the rest of me. And now I have thicker ankles than I ever did. I think the herb you're thinking of is horse chestnut. I tried it, but it didn't do much for me, but maybe it's because mine are so bad.

I had the stripping surgery on my right leg a year after my third child; it took away some bad ones, but new ones just formed instead. My ankle is really puffy and they really itch sometimes, too. The foot was so bad the doctors wouldn't operate there, they didn't want to mess around with it. I actually had to go to the ER once, before the surgery, because one near the surface burst open, and I had this fountain of blood spurting from my leg! They had to stitch it closed!

They blame 3 pregnancies and heredity for mine. Unfortunately, my daughter looks like she'll inherit her mom's veins...

I have also tried the support stockings--they do help, but they're so uncomfortable!

Good luck,

Lori

Thank you for replying Lori. I will try the horse chestnut. Mine are definately pregnancy related and I inherited them from my mom.

No kids yet, but I'll probably be headed down the same path.

I have a cluster of spider veins on the back on one knee and the heredity thing too. Mom has 'em bad also-- from her second child that caused an all too sudden increase of fluid. It put a ton of pressure on her legs and blew out a few veins. They look like purple ropes. (Sister was Downes and only survived 2 weeks). So the body knew someting wasn't right

I am on my feet all day, but am constantly moving. My legs ache sometimes after really busy days.

I purchased one of those foam wedges. So in the evenings I can elevate my legs

Have always worn Sheer Energie support pany hose when applicable

Haven't tried the horse chestnut. Kind of expensive

Anna, I knew I would have varicose veins before I had children so when I was working (RN 12 hour shifts) I would wear those TEDS knee stockings. They helped me tremendously, when I got home after 13-14 hours on my feet, my legs didn't hurt as much. I wore those stockings sort of as a preventative as well as extra support for my tired legs.

Since having children, the varicosities in my right leg are very unattractive and sometimes bothersome when doing any heavy lifting or strenous work outside. Mine are to the point that the stockings help but not as well as they used to.

I wear the support knew high stockings as well. In winter, I add cotton socks over them for warmth. Now I am on cumiden to thin the blood and prevent any further blood clots. Check with your doctor about getting bloodwork to see if you have hereditary disorders. He may want you to start blood thinners to prevent clots.
