I am looking for a book(s)on learning more about herbs/teas and there place in our health and well being. Any suggestions? I am a beginner at this. Truthfully, I haven't the slightest idea where to start.

Erin, are you close to a library? Or a bookstore will do, but the library lets you "test-drive" the books first. I went to the library last Fall and checked out an armful of books. Read through every one of them, and there were two that I liked enough to purchase.

I'll try to come back here and post info on my favorites; the author's names exscape me now. (Hmmm...herbs for memory improvement, let's see...)

Good luck, I am still learning about herbs and can't get enough of them!

Erin,

These are some that I ordered, and could recommend, plus anything written by Susun Weed or Rosemary Gladstar. I would still recommend that you go look at the library or the bookstore and thumb through the books to see how they are laid out, what sections they have (some list only the herb, some with pictures (color or B&W) while others have landcape designs, cooking sections, teas, soaps, herbal tinctures or infusions, etc.

"Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs"
Claire Kowalchik; Paperback; $19.95

"Your Backyard Herb Garden: A Gardener's Guide to Growing Over 50 Herbs Plus How to Use Them in Cooking, Crafts, Companion Planting and More"
Miranda Smith; Paperback; $12.89

1 "Herbal Remedy Gardens: 38 Plans for Your Health & Well-Being"
Dorie Byers; Paperback; $11.53

1 "Growing 101 Herbs that Heal: Gardening Techniques, Recipes, and Remedies"
Tammi Hartung; Paperback; $16.47

Have fun!

Jo

I strongly recommend anything by David Hoffmann. I studied with David. His knowledge, ethics, and compassion are extraordinary. You might also enjoy Jim Duke's Green Medicine. Jim was a skeptic who was won over to our side after visits (initially confrontational) to the Smile Herb Shop in College Park, Maryland, near the Greenbelt Agricultural Research Center where Jim was a scientist. Smile is where I studied with David. He used to hold intense workshops there. His first book is still the best basic book on herbal medicine, I think. It's currently in print as The New Holistic Herbal.

First and foremost as a favorite is the book, "The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine" by Daniel B. Mowrey, PhD. one of the best herbal books on the market in my mind. Sensible and well documented with good herbal recommendations for all sorts of problems

Second, I love Maria Trebans books "Health through God's Pharmacy" and her later book, "Health from Gods Pharmacy". Both are full of the old world wisdom of treating with herbs. And I am a HUGE fan and believer in her Swedish Bitters.

I have a keen interest in Chinese medicine, its ancient with a good track record. "Healing wiht Chinese Herbs"
is a good beginner book for those looking into Chinese herbal remedies. Well written by Lesley Tierra

Since my thesis title is "Alternative Medicine for Aging America" I have a strong interest in herbals for Elder use. There isn't much written on the subject and there should be since we are entering into a time when there will be many elders and a good number will be seeking alternative treatments. Dr Weil has a good book regardning natural health for the aging group. But the book I found very helpful is " An Elders' Herbal" by David Hoffmann. Even if you are still in your prime, you probably have aging parents that are begining to show health concerns so this book is good for everyone to read.

A rather techincal book that anyone dealing with herbs should have on their shelf is the "A-Z guide to drug-herb-vitamine interactions " by health notes. Great resource that outlines clearly the interactions between herbs, vitamines and prescription medications.

An old book I have that was a wealth of information for me during my child bearing days is a little book by Susan S. Weed. "Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Years" Some folks might be put off by a bit of the "new age" which in this case is very "old age" bits in the book, but there is gold in this book to be sure.

For years I have had Agatha Thrash's books. She is an Seventh Day Adventist M.D. Just love that woman. So practical and down to earth. Have heard her speak many times. All into the use of activated charcoal and hot and cold baths. Simple stuff but they work. The book I found most helpful with raising my family was her book written with Phylis Austin and her Agatha's husband Calvin Thrash M.D. "Natural Healthcare For Your Child". Super book with information on prevention, causes and treatment for children from birth through the teen years.

And finally a fun book, well its got tons of good information about many aspects of herbs. 'Mother Nature's Herbal, by Judy Griffin PhD. Who happens to live in my neck of the woods. She has everything in this book. Garden plans, aromatherapy, cooking, folklore, harvesting, and just about every aspect of herbs. Love this book. Its not draggy, or so full of techical aspects that you feel bogged down by its 372 pages.

You might look on the site for storeybooks.com - I believe they have books on herbal teas and herbal tea/remedy gardens. Also google for books by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar - she has a family herbal that is excellent and so entertaining without making everything seem scientific or hard to understand. Susun Weed has a few books too - Gather up a good arsenel of herbal books without spending a fortune, look for them on ebay or on Amazon.com (I get a lot of my books there)alibis.com or abebooks.com - One can never have too many herbal books! Don't forget your local flea market or thrift shops too!I really think the Rosemary Gladstar is the book for you - has recipes and lots of information!!!

I am just getting interested in apothecary and herbalism. I am currently 7 1/2 mos pregnant and decided to go with a homebirth. One of my midwives is an apothecary and opened my eyes to this new world. I'm heading to the library to check out some of these titles.

My husband has a book, "Herbs", contributing Editor is Lesley Bremness. He loves that book. Any time I ask about an herb, he runs for his book. The book has all kinds of information about herbs.

We have tons of books on herbs. We use them as much as we can, though we are just learning. I just bought this great book yesterday called "How to be your own Herbal Pharmacist." If you are interested in using different combinations of teas to make for your good health then this is a great book to have.

You've gotten lots of great recommendations.
I use books by Rosemary Gladstar on a regular basis and have for years.
Herb Mentor is also a great resource.
I've got links to some of my favorite herb books on my blog, too: http://stillroomherbs.blogspot.com/
