Just try to remember that buyer confidence has to do with heading us into a recession. Lack of consumer buying makes stocks drop. So does a change in regime, I mean presidents. What goes up must come down, and vice-versa. I say, take a deep breath, and go buy what you normally do. Things might get tight, but really, things are tight for lots of people all of the time. Know any single parents? I think in one post Tasha said to take a deep breath, that is good advice. I found this list of things to have to beat the recession blues.

Things You’ll Need:
Cool head
Positive outlook
Perserverance
Library Card
Book stores
quiet
peaceful place
A big friend

I blame the media for much of the "recession". Endless, repetitive talk about a pending recession tends to make such things reality.

trish .. great list .. even when there is no fear of 'hard times' comin' on.

jennifer .. unfortunately, so many people are tittilated (hmmmmm .. did i spell that right?) by what the media feeds them! (proof: britney spears and her ilk).

about 35 years ago .. hank played RUGBY in England against The Queen's own police. I 'was telling the story to them of how i had witnessed two teenage boys in a fistfight and a 'bobbie' came up to them .. lifted them by the scruff of their necks (almost cartoon style!) .. shook his finger in the face of one and then in the face of the other (obviously giving them a tongue lashing) ... they ended up shaking hands and walking off friends again'.

i was in awe and stated that in most cities in the United States .. if that happened .. there would be a bloody policeman or bloody kids lying on the street! and WOWZER .. did the 'top cop' reply with an answer that STUNG!!!

he simply looked at me and said "i believe a society gets the law enforcement it deserves". now this was 35 years ago!!! i have a feeling that even in england TODAY .. someone would end up hurt if this were repeated. i wonder??

i kinda' feel that way about the MEDIA .. if so many americans didn't 'buy into' the crap-ola (my personal opinion) that is printed and blasted through tv screens every day and night ... well, .. i guess, we get the media that we deserve sometimes too.

what do ya'll think about this?

A certain amount of cynicism is a GOOD thing. Every single thing written or spoken is inevitably going to have someone's opinion or agenda behind it. Just because information makes it onto television or into a newspaper does not make it fact - it all needs to be taken with a grain (or a whole shaker full of) salt.

Patricia, you are right if everyone stops all their normal buying, things like their usual groceries and just regular shopping rituals it could very well push us into a deep recession. I am not saying to waste your money or to buy like there is no tomorrow. I just mean like Frannie said don't let the media use scare tactics to terrify the living daylights out of everyone. Look how they blow out of proportion every single thing they report. Politics, peoples lives, even the weathermen try to make the worst case scenario. Just live your life being the careful frugal farmgirls that we are. If something big did happen, then we will deal with it.And we will share with each other our ways of dealing. But, getting hysterical over things that might happen are a waste of time. And the media does love to whip everyone into a frenzy over everything.

I always think about this fact when people say "I'll be fine in depression because I don't really need to buy much." The less people buy, the more people will be out of work.

The thing about a depression is that it would be a huge disruption to the economy in general. That's not the same thing as one individual family going through a financially tight patch.

Peanut, exactly...every election year they do this, but I do think we have issues to address...but most of the problems stem from the person in office before the present president...same with offices. Think about it? OH I am ready to throw the tv out the window!!! I'm sick of the media 100% and yes I am semi lost on what the latest news is, I know the election crap because that's all that you hear and see. I want a cabin with a paper delivery route and thats it. TV is looking more and more like satan to me :-p

You know my dd is a journalist and its been so interesting for both of us!! She tells me how excited everyone
gets when there is a big story (.. shooting, etc) Because a slow news day is not good-what are you gonna write about! So of course things are blown a bit out of proportion!
That said-I just stopped watching TV all together-(except when dd is reporting or anchoring of course)I just live my life without all the background noise!

The major factor leading to a depression, rather than a recession, are lower interest rates, leading to a boom, leading to a surplus of goods, and people that cannot pay off the lines of credit they took when those interest rates were so low, and then people don't buy he surplus, etc. This is how I understand how the Great Depression started. Usually a depression can be as small as a two year cycle, unless the gov't dumps $ into failing industries, which is what happened in the 30's in this country, and in the 80's in Japan, making both depressions last ten years. It sounds an awful lot like what is happening to the housing market, and of course the feds will be dumping $ soon, to help more people get housing loans. You can try to control your spending habits, but there really is no point because it is so out of our hands.

I know there were tons of houses for sale in my lil town. But we have small houses that are expensive and high taxes. I could never afford the house I live in! hehe

This is certainly an interesting topic with lots of interesting opinions. I think it is great that we are all strong, independent farmgirls. I think that we will all be fine, no matter what comes ahead in the economy. If we keep our heads up and do what we can such as planting gardens, saving a few extra pennies for a rainy day, and maybe walking a little more to save gas money, we will all get through this little economic squeak.
