My daughter's cat attacked and I have lost three of the chicks. I thought I had them well-protected, but apparently a cat-on-the-prowl is no match for heavy furniture. Only Flora survived (by hiding in my craft room). She is now in her bin, which is in my craft room, with the door closed. I am heartbroken.

Introducing the four sisters. Well,we'll just say they are sisters!
Aren't they adorable?

I am smitten!

How cute! Where will your little henhouse be? On the back deck? So glad you got your little chicks.

These little chickies came from nearby. My friend, Christine, has chickens and she hatched a whole lot of them to sell for Easter chicks. Dearest hubby was not too thrilled when I came home with them. But, he is the one that told me she had called with the good news that the chicks had hatched! Honestly, the man is a mystery! What did he think I was going to do?
They will live inside until they are ready to be moved outdoors, and then they will live on my front screened porch for a few weeks. I have to lay down plastic and newspaper for them. But it's a good place to become acclimated to the big world out there.
My henhouse will be in the back yard along the edge of the woods. I have plans to make it like Fort Knox, to prevent anything unsavory coming by and sneaking off with one of my babies.
I have named three of them- Hazel, Flora and Martha. The littlest one still needs a name. I think I will have a little contest on my blog for that one. I need to get some good pictures so you can see her personality. :)
Anywho- that's the scoop from this henhouse. (Literally.)
I have to go play now.

I'm so sorry, Karin--what a heartbreak. With cats, unfortunately, that's their nature and where there is a will there is a way.

Hopefully Flora will flourish!!! Give her a sweet kiss for me.

Karin - I am so sorry. I hope you do not feel it is your fault in any way.

When I spent time on my granpda's farm, these things happened all the time. It is perhaps the less fun part of farm life, but real nonetheless.

See if you can get some more chickies. I think you will feel better if you do, and my heart goes out to you.

Ooh, hugs! These things happen. Cats are the worst at times, but it's their nature.

I am so sorry. How frustrating. We had a cat kill our paraket when we were little we did NOT feel very kindly toward that cat for awhile.

It happens so often and is SO sad. Little chickies are just too cute to die. The girls got 3 baby chicks when my husband (their father) was ill because we used to raise chickens for eggs but the dog got them-boom--boom--boom. Not the dog we have now. I want to get more chickens but I am not sure anymore. MB

Oh no! I have had that happen before when I used to raise my chicks in the garage...the kids would leave a door open and the cat would get in..no matter how well covered the brooder was she could get them. Darn. I hate that it happened to you. I am glad Flora survived. She will be extra special now.
