I usually get myself a little something for my birthday. I'm divorced, no children, but I like the idea of celebrating each year, so I usually get a quilting mag or a fat quarter or two, etc., a little treat for myself. This year, I had to work and really didn't have any extra money for anything, so felt it best to pass it by. The mail came and there was a book from one of the crafting book clubs I had apparently forgotten to send my "don't send" reply to. It was easy to open and sneak a peek, so I decided to see what book I'd be sending back via return mail. It was Mary Jane Butters' book. I had never heard of her or her farm. I was intrigued and sat down to give it a quick glance. Some hours later, with a stiff neck and sore rear end, I realized I had read the entire thing in one sitting and....it was the perfect birthday present for myself. It made me realize how far I had strayed from the "me" of the 1970s, a real Mother Earth type or real wannabe, at any rate. It was nostalgic of my grandmother who made more fruit-juice-can hassocks than any of us could count. It made me yearn for a simpler existence in this madcap society. It was charming and informative and it gave me real hope that a person who wasn't a fanatic about anything but living in a kind and simple fashion could do things that really help people and teach people and give them hope for something better. It was the nicest birthday present I've ever given myself. I was definitely going to keep it and pay the book club for the "mistake they had sent." I started thinking...I never saw that title as an offering for the "book of the month" by the book club. I went back and checked my brochure and her book WASN'T the one they would send automatically if I forgot to reply fast enough. So, it was a wonderful quirk of fate that somebody slipped it by accident in the box and I got it on my birthday. Thanks, MJ, you made my birthday back on August 22, and you and your friends have helped enrich my days ever since!

Carol, Your post is lovely and straight from the heart... I loved what you said about straying from the real me of the 1970's, the Mother Earth type... You said so well what so many of us feel about Mary Jane's philosophy...and how we feel we have come "home" to those values and way of life! Thanks for sharing those reflections.

Carol, you took the words right out of my mouth. I think what MJ has done for me is to validate how I feel deep in my soul. That it's o.k. for me to want what some might call "old fashioned" living in this fast paced world. And I'm so happy to have found a forum where I can be ME!

LOL! Thank you kindly! Feeling a bit younger, having read and absorbed Mary Jane's book. Wonder, if I keep rereading it, will the age-reversal process in my mind accelerate?! Can't hurt to try!

You're gonna love it. I got mine about two weeks ago and haven't stopped carting it around to read. IT's why I haven't posted as much.

I was reading MJ's book again today. If I were a human ecology or home economics professor in college I would make her book a REQUIRED reading textbook! It is just fabulous!

The book is fabulous.
The book I ordered from a christian book club.
It came right before the Hurricane hit us in Texas.
Each day I sat by the window and read by the light outside.
I truly believe this was my sanity in a very bad situation.
To come to terms with all the things I was willing to loose.
All of the things that I thought I needed.
I realized I could live without alot of things.
I admit in South East Texas with a temperature of 98 degress and 100 percent humidity I was always hoping for air conditioning and ice.
Hot soft drinks and even warm water gets old fast.
I know God is still in control and ask your prayers for all the people who are trying to come to terms with what is really important.
For me it is faith in a loving God, my family, and knowing that I can do all things thru Christ which strengthens me.
Also to True Blue Farm Girl I have lots of quilting material and I can send some fat quarters your way for free so you can treat yourself without spending your budget.

I can't remember if I've said so since receiving mine. The book is absolutely wonderful. There's a nor'easter blowing and snow only 50 miles from here. I imagine as the temperature drops a bit more the rain will turn to snow. It's down to 36° now. My plans for this evening are a cup of tea and this book.

Carol - fate sent you the book. If you want to call it fate! And I am glad you peeked in to see it. It continually amazes me how MaryJane is finding her way into so many lives and changing them for the better. Thank you, MaryJane!

Amen sistah Bluesky! I have kept mine in the car the last month to read off and on while I wait to pick up youngest girl at school! I pulled it out tonight to curl up with and read in my cozy reading chair. It is JUST the kind of book to curl up with on a cold autumn night or snowy nor'easter night! With a hot cup of orange spice tea!

Welcome to you Pamela! Glad you have found us!
I love MJ's book. I worked for a friend this summer, who is the caretaker of a huge cabin on a lake here, owned by some rich folk. I went up a couple times a week to help clean and do laundry. With some of the money I earned I bought MJ's book. Will never regret that purchase! It has post it flags throughout the book for reference and such. It is like talking to my mom and g'ma, with all the info that it contains. don't know how often I have been through it. It will definetly be well worn! I can't wait till the workbooks come out!

Carol - you were definitely meant to get MaryJane's book. It sounds like it has helped you rediscover your "roots" so to speak. Since I discovered this forum a couple of months ago, and received the book this week (!) I feel that I have really found a wonderful network of "kindred souls" that I can connect with. I am a Mother Earth type as well, (born in the 70's!) and have always felt a deep connection with nature, and I love traditional crafts and organic food! I have only just begun pouring over the stories and ideas in it, and am off now to read more.....!

Debby, Love to hear your thoughts on the book! You are a kindred spirit! There are alot of different generations mingling here (I was born in the 50's) and Mary Jane and her philosophy has brought us together in such a unique and wonderful way! So glad you are here joining in Debs!
