I just made a big, colorful snake ( like a stuffed animal snake) for my nephew Jake , we call him "Jake the Snake" (hence the snake making. I really want to stuff it with cotton or really anything besides polyfil or fiberfil. Almost everything I do and make is from recycled material, natural material, as oganically as possible. And fiberfil just does not fit into any of those catagories. So I went looking online to find cotton stuffing or at least some alternitive, and I really didn't find anything. Except recycled polyfil from India and I try not to buy from counrties like India because I just can't bare the thought of children recycling polyfil for 19 hours a day or something like that, but that is a differnet topic. So I'm looking for something natural to stuff a snake with or a pillow or a doll. Oh I thought of wool cause thats nice and natural, but from what I saw online it would cost me $100 just to stuff the snake. SO, any suggestions?

Melissa, have you heard of buckweat hulls? I have a pillow filled with these and it is wonderful. My sis gave it to me. It is very sturdy and comfortable. Can't wash it though. It is a neckroll. It might work alright for a stuffed snake.

Sqrl, I am totally with you on the organic and recycling thing...but here is a different twist to it.If you think about it, if you RE-use something inorganic, you are recycling and not perpetuating the sweat shop system (which I totally agreee with). So here is my suggestion: go to the local thrift shop or Goodwill and purchase old pillows, take them home and reuse the stuffing into your snake. This will serve all your purposes and keep the old pillow stuffing out of the local landfill.I have done this on many occasions, after a good hot water wash and dry. |
