My twenty month old daughter has been grinding her teeth for several months now, mostly at night. This doesn't really suprise me because she is very advanced and high strung so this kinda goes along with that. I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this with a baby and if so, what did the Doc say about it? I am debating whether or not to take her to the doctor for this. Is there any special remedies I haven't heard of???

My six year old does this and her dentist said it was just "part of growing up and totally normal".

I have had this problem all my life and have developed TMJ and chronic headaches because of it. I would suggest taking her to the dentist. A simple mouthguard perscribed by your dentist can easily solve the problem.

So have I, Julie. I have to take muscle relaxers now. I have tried to go off them, but I go right back to grinding. I don't know what age I started doing it, but I know I did it as a child. Nobody knew until the dentist mentioned something.

Oh poor baby!!! I noticed Charlie (or heard him) doing this!!! I was told it was normal too!! Hmmm..maybe it feels good to them? I have braces and I can't wear a nightguard for my teeth grinding. I have resorted to stuffing small amounts of cotton in my mouth but I wouldn't suggest that for a child.

Cheers,
Heather

hhhmmm, interesting. It sounds like everyone says it's harmless but I would like to get it under control before it turns into a lifetime habit. I would hate for her to stil lhave it when she is an adult. I can't beleive you have to take muscle relaxers heather (plumcreekmama)...I didnt know it could get that bad. I think I will still metion it to the dr/dentist next time I take her in. Thanks gals!

I grind mine so hard that it has woken up people in the next room! For some people it may be aharmless phase. For me I would classify of as a problem.

Mine is more of a clenching. It gives me terrible headaches without the muscle relaxers. I'm talking all day every day. I guess it's better to take a muscle relaxer than to comsume the quantity of pain relievers that I was.

My oldest son did it up until he was about 5 and then stopped. It was just awful and I really worried about it..sounded like he was chewing on rocks..ugh! As far as I know (he is 30 now) he hasn't ever had more problem with it. I would ask if I were you. I was told that his was normal and he would outgrow it..sure dosn't sound like THAT is always the case though!!

All of my kids do this too. My oldest DD (17) went to the dentist & he could tell, but didnt seem too concerned. She seems to do it more than the other 2 kids. I am still going to buy her the mouthguard to wear at night. They sell them at the grocery store for @ $30. They may grow out of it, but I think it is hereditary. My Dad has always done this for as long as I can remember. I dont know if it was from his grinding, or what but when he slept, it was like his tooth surface was flat & would actually squeak really loudly (Like nails on a chalkboard) every time he grinded them together. Would never hurt to see what your dentist says though.

I have a mouth piece from the dentist to help with it I also go to the chiropractor to adjust my jaw as this is usually a sign of miss alignment and stress which can be adjusted to get rid of the headaches and such that come from it.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

I have done this all my life too. I grind and clench. Actually I think I clench more than grind. I even catch myself doing it during the day. My daughter does this too. Maybe it is a hereditory thing. The dentist keeps an eye on it. I know sometimes my jaw will hurt. It wouldn't hurt to mention it to the dentist. I really doubt if a 20 month old would keep a device in her mouth or that the Dr. would recomend it. But, he may have some other ideas. Good luck!
