Just heard on Tv that Burt's Bees Company has been bought out by Clorox.

It started out so small and good and true with all good intentions but, like all other grass roots companies, it has become the result of big business. I guess there is no way around it.

I don't think it is inevitable that _all_ companies get bought out by bigger companies. I think that there will always be some grassroots companies that stay true to their roots. And while it is disappointing to see yet another great company get bought out, I certainly sympathize with the original owners in deciding to sell out in the face of this economic recession that the country is facing. Many small companies are finding it hard to survive without a huge bankroll behind them.

Alee - I agree - they made the right decision. Job well done for them! For some reason, it makes me sad.

I think it's because once it's in the hands of the larger corporation, one isn't sure if they will continue with the same standards, or change their operations and quality. I've heard of this happening before. Also, I think it's sad when someone has to sell their "baby"--the company they started--I think it must be hard to give up something started by so much hard work and care...

Burt's Bees was actually purchased by Clorox back in October 2007. What has happened is the completion of the merger. Burts Bees was however under another large company previous to the Clorox buyout. Burts Bees hasn't been a privately owned company for MANY years.

It's a bummer when smaller companies "have" to do something like that and it seems that many I thought were still privately owned haven't been for so long. Such is life I guess...

Burt's has been a staple at our house for a while. I was bummed to find this out on another thread. I see that Burt's is already sneaking "Fragrance" onto some products. Fragrance covers a multitude of costmetic industry "sins" and may or may not be natural in any way shape or form.

Just read the label, as always. Most cosmetic type things are really hard to make totally natural because preservatives are required if for no other reason than our fingers, lips, etc. aren't germ-free. Fragrance just is something that isn't necessarily only essential oil. BTW, they use peppermint probably mostly to cover any rancidity issues with lip products sitting around on the shelf, just my guess.

Just goes to show - the big companies are far from dumb. They know good products when they see them, and then they go after them when the time is right. I realize this is capitalism and that is one thing that has made our country strong and it is one of our freedoms. But still to see the "small" guy go away.....but others will spring up! That is the American Way. We are creative and resourceful!

I know a lot of our farmgirls here on the forum make items that can match the Burt's Bee's items and even exceed them. Maybe it is time to buy from the truly little guy and support those who work from home? Hehehe I can just imagine the call one day "Hi Alee, Clorox would like to buy your recipe for your Milk Bath Soak" LOL

I agree- It is sad to see the little guys get eaten up by the bigger guys. I am trying this year to make my money do the most talking for me by avoiding buying products that have bad manufacturing processes and buying organic handmade when possible. It truly is a grassroots movement but I think like an ant...even the smallest can accomplish much!

I know that if you taking Baking Soda and add enough drops of essential oil- like peppermint or Lavender, you will get that taste instead of the baking soda taste. I do make my own peppermint toothpaste this way. I like it lots better!

Sad to see small companies get bought out, but nice to know Clorox also has a "green" lone out now too. The pengelem swings in both directions now!

My only regret is that I love off the wall and unusual and non mainstream.

Kind of weird to see Burt's Bees almost mainstream in places like Target

Sad to know my all natural store may drop them

Keep an eye on the ingredient lists

I'd be more afraid if they were bought out by some entity as unscrupulous as Wal Mart
