Hello to all you fellow farmgirls and farmgirls in training
I am new to all of this, chat forums and farming. I would be very interested in chating with anyone that is alsonew to farming. I need all of the tips I can get!!
I live in a very rural setting, on a small province in Canada called Prince Edward Island, on my husbands family homestead. He is the 3rd generation in this house which makes it very special to us. We have 150 acres of beautiful land, which we grow our feed and bedding for our animals. We are dairy farmers that believe in pasturing our animals and not tying them up in stalls. We also have free range pigs that live in our apple orchard, that are sometimes a wee bit to free range and end up in the flower gardens and let me say, pigs don't "tip toe through the tulips"
I grew up in Canada's biggest province, Ontario right in the heart of downtown, the concrete jungle also known as Toronto. this, my friends, is why I am eager to hear some feedback from other farmgirls.
Thanks for taking the time to read my message and drop me a line when you can. Cheers! mellaisbella

Hi all! I'm new here, too. I live in Central TX in a small town outside Austin on 6 acres of VERY rocky land with no topsoil. My "farm" is a series of raised beds where I grow tons of herbs, some scraggly tomatoes and fruit. We're in the process of designing a smaller house that we'll build on 3 acres, then divide the property. Then I'll get to start all over! LOL.. Hope to add some chickens eventually to help with the bug problems out here. I'm totally organic, and hope to stay that way.

Good to be here!

Well, from one former concrete jungle girl to another, I say "HI!". I'm much happier living away from Toronto too. I envy your living in PEI though. One day I'll get around to visiting your wee province. Some years ago on a trip to New Brunswick, we had hoped to make it to PEI, but ran out of time. Again, welcome and have fun!

Hi Bobbi,
you say that you are organic HOORAY!! that is my goal someday as well ahhhhhhh somewhat of a challenge as we are dairy farmers, but a gaol nevertheless. Any way, try companion planting. marigolds are so pretty and the bad bugs love them so they leave your veggies alone!!! (perhaps you knew this already)
And hello to you too CityCat, PEI is a very senic place and if you're in the neighbourhood.....we are 10 minutes away from the bridge

A warm southern welcome to bella Mella (love the name)!!! PEI!!!! Oh, it's been my dream ever since I read the Ann(e) of Green Gables books!!! I even had a sheep once named,Marilla, and had hoped for a whole flock with all of the character names. I have collected many magazines and resources from the area and had hoped when I lived on Martha's Vineyard to make the trip, but didn't make it. Now I'm back in Louisiana and building my dream again. So excited to meet you and looking forward to hearing all about your adventures as a dairy farmer. You're gonna love all the farmgirls here...very generous hearts! Now tell us more about yourself so we can get to know you better.
HUGS, Kim

Welcome to the farm Bobbi, from your Louisiana neighbor! Boy, you sound like you have some challenges ahead, but you also sound like you have the positive farmgirl attitude and sense of humor! Good for you! A yard of chickens sounds great! If you haven't already, order MJ's back issue,"The Art of the Egg". It's full of great egg/chick info.
My son is relocating to Austin after leaving NO b/c of Hurricane Katrina, so perhaps there will be a visit in our future. Enjoy your time here and we look forward to getting to know you better.

HUGS!
Kim

Hi Melanie: ohhhhhPEI. I too used to watch and read the Anne of Green Gables books and movies and dream away. Gorgeous! I'd go with the chickens and herb gardens too - very easy to grow and no need to spray usually. But, about those pigs......

hello to you "Ann with an E" fans. I can tell you truly that PEI is exactly as Anne Shirely descibes in her books. Rolling green hills and feilds as far as the eye can see..... Prince Edward Island has a population of only 125, 000 people therefore there are still A LOT of fields and not many buildings. Even in the provinces capitol (Charlottetown, the birthplace of our country's confederation) there aren't many tall buildings. Oh, and I almost forgot the dirt. Our soil is red. Brick red. Which makes for pretty snow in the winter, although it also makes for no white animals. My dog has/had white paws, now they are stained red. Oh, but I love it so!!!

Welcome Melanie, I have always wanted to visit Prince Edward Island, it always seemed like a magical place to me, at least I imagined it to be so. You'll find many of the answers you are looking for. Welcome.

Welcome Melanie! You live in one of my most favorite places and I too am a fan of all the "Anne" stories,etc... How nice for you to live in such a beautiful place. I hope you find "kindred spirits" here, we do have a lot of interesting people to "chat" with! Nice to meet you!

Bobbi_ Sounds like you have a big task ahead of you! It's not easy trying to farm when your soil is crummy! Just keep adding organic matter to your raised beds and they will thrive. Hope you find us a fun and friendly group and that you jump in and join some topics soon! Welcome!

with a happy heart

Welcome Melanie....I too am new to the Farm Girl Connection. I live in a small town in south Missouri. Married for 23 years and have two daughters, 16 and 19. We all keep very busy with jobs, work, school, garden, house and everything else that goes along with today's life. I enjoy cooking along with the presentation part of serving! My husband and I do many dinner parties which I totally enjoy! This summer I have been very busy with the garden and putting things up for winter time.

My weekdays are spent at the pottery shop where we make terra cotta dinnerware and flower pots! In my spare time I enjoy painting on all kinds of pieces of pottery! Everything from plates, platters, tiles and more. I only wish I had more time to devote to just painting!

I have been learning a lot from this chat room (which this is the first time to ever be on a chat room...) and hope to get to know more people as time goes by.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Hi, Melanie. I am new on here, too and just loving it. I wrote a little (okay, alot!) about my reasons for being on here and I hope you will read it over (Surprise, surprise...another new member). I wanted to tell you that I laughed out loud about the description of pigs "tiptoeing through the tulips" and when I was teaching at a scrapbook convention in Phoenix this weekend, I made a sample card with a chorus line of cartoon pigs dancing between two rows of tulips!

I am very interested in the cookbook that Julia mentioned in another post, so if you have any idea which PEI cookbook that might be, I would like to know.

Hope to chat more...Lisa

Hi Melanie,

I am new to this website as well. Your life sounds wonderful to me. I love Canada, and my family and I are taking a road trip to Toronto next week. We live in Doylestown, Pa, and thankfully, still have some beautiful farms around us. I enjoyed the picture of your free range pigs (in my mind) roaming around the apple trees. I have a secret yearning to live on a farm but since I do not, I won't be much help in the tips department. I would love to hear more about what your life is like.

HI Lisabee
I'm not quite sure what PEI cookbook you mean but we sure do have quite a few. I have lived/been in many places in Canada and all provinces seem to have there own taste for food. And you teach scrapbooking? Do you work for a company or is it your own business? I am trying my hand at scrapbooking. I do love the stickers! Oh and your card sounds absolutley fabulous. What a crafty lady you are!
