I have several friends having babies this year so I came up with a great gift that I could make them all but I need some help. What I'm making is shapes, cubes and triangles right now, out of different textures of fabric and with different textures of ribbion on some of the edges. I've got them all sewed together, turned right side out and stuffed but now I'm having a problem finishing the opening. I know I've done this before but it's been several years so I feel like I'm missing something that will make it look right and be very sturdy for a baby to play with.

I guess my biggest question is how do I start and finish it so the knots in the thread aren't on the outside? Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to make this work?

Thank you!

I've made what you describe, and also little comfort blankets with the ribbons. After I turn them, I start the thread inside (hand stitching) - take your first stitch inside the opening, then hand stich across with small stitches. When I get to the end of the opening, I take a couple of tight little stitches, loop the needle through a stich once, then bury the end in the item, but stiching through, pulling it tight, cutting the thread and when I release it, the end pops back into the item. Then finish off with a tiny drop of "Fray Check" and you're in business!

I always anchor my thread well within the seam allowence about a 1/4 in from the start of the opening, this way my first few stitches are on an already done seam. I finish the same way Sherri does so that the thread end disappears inside.
