Candy Hogan (#8283, Tigger9777) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Classy Casseroles badge!

"I had fun looking on the Internet and through my recipes and cook books for casserole recipes to try.

I made the Taco Casserole out of the new MJF magazine and the grandkids came over so we could try it and talked about the recipes.

It was fun."

"After we had our family tasting party with the taco casserole, the family thought it would be nice to try another recipe from the MJF magazine. The next night, I made the twice baked potato casserole.

We liked the added bacon to this recipe."

"I posted on the merit badge chit chat room, but it went to the top of the page.

I made a breakfast casserole of home made hash browns and pork sausages.

Next I made a lunch casserole of 3 cheese macaroni and split beef hot dogs.

Dinner was a ham and noodles casserole (recipe on the chit chat room).

My dessert casserole was a peach dump cake casserole with cinnamon.

I really liked this new badge. I have continued making casseroles such as a chicken mushroom soup noodle bake."

Candy Hogan (#8283, Tigger9777) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Play With Your Food badge!

"I played with my 3 year old grand daughter to make some simple cute appetizer snacks.

We made: Triscuit crackers with salami & cheese.

Ritz crackers with cheese and olives, and finally Celery sticks with peanut butter and chocolate chips (ants on a log - some people use raisins).

We had a blast."

"I looked on the Internet for ideas, but decided to try the Focaccia bread in the new MJF magazine because it looked so colorful and pretty.

I have never made focaccia before. It was an easy recipe; mine is not as pretty, but it turned out well.

It was good."

"I looked online and in my kid recipie books for ideas.

Since we had 3 of the grandkids for the weekend, we started off with a decorate your own breakfast pancake. Lots of different fresh fruit toppings and, of course, sugar options like chocolate chips, whipped cream and maple sugar.
My sharing of the recipe was with our grandkids.

It was fun to see what everyone created."

Candy Hogan (#8283, Tigger9777) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Swap It Up! badge!

"I have participated and hosted several swaps before, so I am excited to do this again.

I am going to do my April Showers bring May Flowers swap, but instead of just flower seeds, add flower bulbs this year.

Locally, we had our April Brentwood Farmgirl meeting and I suggested we all bring a swap so all the ladies can do this beginner level at our meeting.

It was fun."

"I went to the swaps chat room and signed up to participate in the "Recipe Card Swap In Honor Of Jubilee"

We just needed to mail 6 blank recipe cards to our partner.
I was paired with Debbie, from Oregon. We have swapped in the past, so it was fun to partner with her again.

The swap closed on 4/20 and I mailed my swaps 4/22.
I sent her 6 blank recipe cards, 2 blank stationary cards, some seeds and a letter.

I like doing swaps."

Candy Hogan (#8283, Tigger9777) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Mrs. Potato Head badge!

"I researched some potato recipes such as: potato pancakes, bread, soup, patties, boxty and farls.

I decided to make the boxty and farls. Both recipes are from Ireland.

I researched how to grow organic potatoes online at organicgardening.com and on YouTube I researched potato growing secrets.

I have to say, this was pretty fun."

"I hosted a potato recipe party while I had 3 of the grandkids this past weekend. We made mashed potatoes, garlic roasted potatoes, and had the boxty and farls I made for the Beginner level.

My new recipe I created for the Expert level was their favorite, and I will post that next.

I have started growing my organic russet potatoes. Last spring I had a big potato patch. This time I am trying to grow them in crates.

It was fun."

"I created a new recipe by using the Farl recipe as my base.
Note that recipe does not say how much salt to use, so my recipe I used 1 tsp.

Then, because it was a bland cake/bread, I decided to add cinnamon and chocolate chips, turn it over like a french crepe and fry it in a pan.

I shared it while I had the family this past weekend and three of the grandkids. Out of all the potato recipes and Casseroles, this was their favorite.

It turned out tasty."

Candy Hogan (#8283, Tigger9777) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Terrarium Glass Gardening badge!

"I researched what plants to put in terrariums and they recommend plants that will do well with humidity such as:

Nerve plant, ferns, mosses, peperomia, pilea, mini orchids and bromeliads.

The size I want to do is table top centerpiece and small glass containers. Maybe a geo dome container. I will put it in my sunny kitchen.

Excited to start making some terrariums."

Candy Hogan (#8283, Tigger9777) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Be the Farmer in Your Market badge!

"Our local Farmers Market runs every Saturday rain or shine. I went on April 25th.

Most of the vendors sell vegetables, fruit and flowers. You get some craft booths and food booths like artisan bread and kettle corn.
Brain storm what to sell.

I made a lot of curley scarves when I went through a two-year phase and I have 3 black garbage bags full. I have donated some to charity auctions and to Boy Scout, 4-H and Senior Center fundraiser baskets. I still have a lot, so I would plan to sell the scarves at $5-$7 each. The yarn cost was $5-$8, and I should charge for time, but at this point, just selling to recoup my costs is the goal.

My timeline would be our craft fair we are planning for 11/21/26. If some opportunity comes up sooner, I will participate.

I like going to Farmers Markets."

Sylvia Jacobus (#5389, Cissik) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a Beginner Weaving badge!

"I created a loom out of a shoe cardboard box. I used carpet warp cotton 8/4 f, cotton-linen yarn, linen, and crochet thread for weaving. My favorite was the cotton-linen. Easy to use and felt so smooth. My directions came from the article "Weaving Made Easy," originally published in MJF's magazine April-May 2010, pp.70-71.

Fabrics are created by using a loom or a tree limb, door knob, etc. and by warping thread or yarn in a north-south direction. By moving thread or yarn in an east-west direction and moving between your threads, a fabric is created. Either the loom and a person utilizing specific activities are invoiced. This is a simple explanation but it takes a warp thread to be interacted by a weft thread for this creation. Until you see how looms, whatever the type, the creation is fascinating."

My daughter has a book club so she gladly took the bookmarks. I learned a lot from this lowly loom. I'm keeping as it introduce me to weaving--very enjoyable."

Sylvia Jacobus (#5389, Cissik) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Intermediate Weaving badge!

"Looms: large looms are often used to make large pieces of fabric and take up a lot of space. Navajo looms, though they may look primitive, are used for wool rugs and wall-hangings. Smaller ones exist for beginners and those who want smaller items.

Table looms are used for tapestries, shawls, place mats, and multitude of items as they can be expanded. Inkle/tablet/card looms are used to create belts, straps for purses, guitars, cameras, hat bands, and many other items. Back strap looms are older than Egypt's pyramids. They are very portable, need a few parts, and the weaver's body is an integral part in the weaving.

I was given a card weaving inkle style loom. Its style allows space for the cards (known as tablets).

Sherri Carroll, Tina VanDaam, and I met in person. Candy Hogan, Ann Ramirez and Rea Nakanishi gathered to take on card weaving. Books, videos, we were able to proceed. The last three ladies were in California (We are all part of the Brentwood chapter) and they were in a Zoom room.
I finished my hat band. I was anxious to make it. Tina has finished her project."

Heather Neeper (#4701, nndairy) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning an Intermediate Rocks and Minerals badge!

"I visited the Ohio Caverns. The cavern tours are amazing. The gift shop is full of rocks, minerals, gemstones, and even some fossils on display (and for sale). To start my collection I went mining. I posted pictures on the forum since only one can be uploaded with the badge application.

This was a very fun badge to work on. I'm looking forward to identifying my bounty for the next level."

"My county extension wasn't much help, but I found some books and YouTube videos to help me identify some wild plants in my area.

It was fun to observe the yard, pasture, woods, and fence rows to see what I could identify and if it was worth nibbling or not."

"I spent time throughout the last year observing the yard, pasture, fence rows, and woods, making sure to note how various plants look throughout the seasons. I also worked on the expert level at the same time and used some of the things I found (more on that later).

It's very rewarding to find things that have been growing for years that no one knew about (like an apple tree)! It's also wonderful to find very nutritious food for free."

"I foraged for natural foods and made wild violet jelly from violets growing in the woods. I made dandelion jelly from the dandelions in the pasture. Black raspberries and blackberries in the fence row and along the edge of the woods were great for eating and some jam. Hickory nuts make delicious, nutritious tea (especially if you add a splash of home made maple syrup). I added some chickweed and purple dead nettle to salads. I do not eat fungi, but I did learn to identify some of them and participated in a wild mushroom hunt. My friends were more than happy to take my share!

It's amazing how much food there is if you only take the time and put forth the effort to find, and enjoy it!"

Terri Reynolds (#8204) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning a Beginner Music badge!

"Dear Friends, I have been playing trombone since I was in 5th grade. I have now been teaching 5th grade science for over 10 years and continue to play my trombone, as well as a few other instruments. This said, the concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony though understood, I found interesting to define.

Then exploring different genres and identifying these elements was also fun. I made it a point to explore genres I have not typically listened to or played. I discovered different instruments, many syncopated rhythms, and some complex harmonies.

I am not sure what or how you would have me explain having identified the different elements. I would say the exploration of some new genres has been a success.

It has also been a joy to expose my students to new music as I have played some as background music in the classroom."

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning a Beginner Light the Way badge!

"I was unable to find any old wire fencing like the chandelier in Mary Jane's book was made from so I came up with my own version of a chandelier. I had a lot of beads in my stash and saved glass yogurt jars and with a little chain and a couple of old metal pie plates, created this!

I am really happy with how it turned out! It's hanging in my bathroom right now and I'm not sure that I want to move it outside to the patio...it looks nice where it is."

I have been splitting kindling like this for a long time...time to move up to bigger pieces of wood!"
