Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an intermediate level Families Forever badge!

"I couldn't believe how much time was spent with the tvs in our house!!
My oldest son had 25 hours, my oldest daughter had 25 hours, and we had about 60 hours! Sometimes they were all going at the same time!

The teens both have jobs now and that is keeping them busy, so their tv time is almost eliminated! I decided not to turn the tv on until after DH got home from work and that cut it down to 5 - 10 hours a week. We started playing games after dinner and reading to each other! I love the new communication we have!"

Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an intermediate level Buttoned Up badge!

"I found this silver antique button and a large porcelain one. Knowing that they would never be on any article of clothing, I made them into necklaces!

It took a few tries to get them to lay the way I wanted, but once I did I really liked how they looked! I love wearing them to the store and having someone ask, “just where did you find that?”."

Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an intermediate level Entrepreneurial Spirit badge!

"I have the papers to get my tax number and found that I also have to register my business at the county level. I had fun making the business cards — deciding just what information and how to place it.

I mailed in the tax papers and started handing out the cards. I am hoping to have a small opening next weekend, but the grand opening might be later this summer!"

Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a beginner level Heirlooms Forever! badge.

"I am definitely on the heirloom preservation train! I decided to start by planting 100% heirlooms. I also read Lynn Coulter's book and found it so helpful I added it to my farmgirl library!

I have started cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, peas, carrots, onions, and taters. I’m having a bit of trouble getting the seeds going, but they can always be my fall crops instead of spring!"

Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an intermediate level “What’s Your Beef?” badge.

"I finally got my hands on the Beef book and finished it! Learning the history of cattle was amazing. I also noticed that there are a few local beef suppliers in my area.

I can buy grass-fed beef at Yoders in Shipshewana as well as a couple of farms in the area! The meat tastes so good that I would go without before buying it from the grocery store!"

Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a beginner level Horse Dreams badge!

"I had the opportunity to bottle raise a foal. She is so amazing! It was a lot of work but we both learned not to be afraid of each other. I realized too, that the more horses I looked at the more I was drawn to the cream colored ones.

My favorite type of horse is the Palamino. They are beautiful. I may never own one, because I would take in the first horse that needed me, but if I had the choice it’s definitely the Palamino!"

Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an intermediate level Shopping Green badge!

"I finally got rid of the last bottle of bleach that belonged to DH. He loves the stuff. I clean with a vinegar and baking soda mix. I also found a “Green” toilet bowl cleaner that doubles as my shower cleaner.

I watch twin 1yr olds and have such peace of mind knowing that if they do get into my cleaners they are non-toxic. It also seems that most of our allergy problems have disappeared."

Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a beginner level Disconnect to Reconnect badge!

"I disconnect every other weekend when my boys are with me. The phone, tv and video games are all off! I love watching them play outside and we have fun!

I am much more relaxed than when all those gadgets are demanding my attention. And the boys are learning that there are other things to do than play with the gadgets!"

Marcy Piggott (Marcy Jo, #257) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an intermediate level Build It Green badge!

"I started a thread on the Home Safe Home forum. I am having a friend make me benches out of local untreated lumber, and only use things in my home that I am sure of how they were made and of what they were made.

It takes longer sometimes to get what I want or need, but I really like knowing things are “green” in my home."

"My favorite breed is the Palomino, mainly because of its golden color. They are mainly in North America introduced by the Spanish Conquistadors. Their coloring might come from the Arab. Palominos don't "breed true" which means you might not get the color you want in a foal. They are good all-round riding horses and stand 14-17 hands high.

I did read "The Soul of a Horse" in March. It was a wonderful book. I love how it flipped back and forth between Joe’s story and the horse’s story. When I find my next horse I am going to be one with the horse like Joe did. I learned a lot reading that book and have added it to my library want list.

Now that I know more about them it may be easier to get one. Even if I never get a Palomino they will always be my favorite."

Merry Amann (Merry, #536) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a beginner level Heirlooms Forever! badge.

"Chose to include different heirlooms this year in my garden.
Read “Gardening With Heirloom Seeds” - Lynn Coulter

I planted :
Radishes - French breakfast
Lettuce Mesclun Mix - Black-seeded Simpson, Beets Bull’s Blood, Mustard tender green, Spinach Bloomsdale longstanding, Red salad bowl.
Swiss Chard - Rainbow, 5 Color Silver Beet
Italian Broccoli - Rapini Raab

I had Coulter’s book on my reading list and finally got around to reading it. What I liked about her book and how it differs from others is that she takes you through the gardening year, including flowers, making it easy to begin, change over and maintain a year-round heirloom garden."

"Made and used my homemade laundry soap. Researched ways to clean that are non- or less toxic and non-corrosive.

I made laundry soap using a recipe I found here on MJ's. Love it! Converted two friends to homemade laundry soap by giving them samples. Learned I could clean my toilet with vinegar and baking soda, my tub and sinks with baking soda, my dishes with liquid castile soap and soften my laundry with vinegar. All of which I now do."

Rebekka Boysen Taylor (Rebekka Mae, #40) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a beginner level Self-sufficiency badge!

"I spent last summer gathering lovage and basil from my garden. I dried it and tucked it into little jars, perfect hostess gifts for the rest of the year.

For my first attempts at drying, it went well. My friends love lovage and they had never heard of it prior."

Rebekka Boysen Taylor (Rebekka Mae, #40) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an intermediate level Self-sufficiency badge!

"I canned 24 jars of apple pie filling to share with friends and neighbors. I gave them out on Election Day! American Pie as it should be;) I froze zucchini, strawberries, huckleberries and tomatillos.
Finally I canned over 180 jars of local fruits and salsas.

My salsa was 100% from farm ingredients and you can taste every bit of the late summer sun in it. The best part of my canning had to be when my husband was injured and out of work for three months — it made it much easier to make ends meet with a FULL pantry.
Thank you, Mary Jane. I literally would not have done it without your example and Megan’s encouragement."

Rebekka Boysen Taylor (Rebekka Mae, #40) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a beginner level Crochet badge!

"I made my first full rag rug in August. I learned to crochet using the instructions from MaryJane’s Stitching Room and a friend sat me down and helped me get started.

It is FABULOUS! I used up old scraps of fabric I had saved from making slings, so it is also full of memories. The kids took it to their sunny reading spot by the front window and so I am now starting on a big one for me "

It has turned out well. I have to keep my bags on the front passenger side to keep remembering to take them into the stores."

Tammy Bradshaw (Tammyb, #541) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a beginner level Going Green badge!

"For the Going Green badge I have double-checked my home/garage/garden shed for anything that is toxic. I also wrote and printed a mission statement for my home. (I liked that idea!) I have started a journal with my ideas and recipes in it for easy access. And I have made a reusable bag and filled it with good green cleaners to give to my daughter.

I did find some nasty stuff in the garage and garden shed. My husband disposed of it for me. The mission statement turned out nicely. I'm thinking of printing it out on some nice paper and hanging it. The journal was already in process so I just added new recipes that I had on slips of paper so it is now in one place. And my daughter liked the surprise of a reusable bag filled with items she needed for her new apartment."

Julia Valovich (Julia, #440) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a beginner level Going Green badge!

"I have gotten rid of all the toxic cleaners and have made my own. I created a small journal with all the green recipes I have collected over the years and keep it in the pantry with my new green cleaners. I have shared the recipes and a few of the homemade cleaners as a hostess gift and have even been posting the recipes on the farmgirl chatroom.

I really want to create a safe and healthy environment for my children. I want to set an example to my girls as they are starting their own homes, to do the same. I want to share the idea of going green with my friends so that at least our small part of the world will be greener and cleaner.

I have enjoyed making my own cleaners and love the feeling of satisfaction, knowing where the cleaners came from and that my house is becoming toxin free."

Victoria Montoya (EastTXfarmgirl, #549) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a beginner level Shopping Green badge!

"I am a nurse, and with drug reps giving tote bags out like candy, I had accrued quite a collection. When I read the requirements for this badge I thought what a good use for the bags. I have one from BlueCross/BlueShield, 2 very nice large ones from Lexapro, 1 from Lovenox, 1 from University of Texas Health Center and my favorite that gets all the attention — a big blue one from Viagra. They are all very sturdy and made of cloth. I roll them up and keep them in a large straw beach tote which can also double as a shopping bag. I have been using the bags to do all my shopping for a month now and plan on continuing.

I love using the cloth shopping bags. I just don't know why I hadn't thought of it sooner. I don't have to worry about them breaking or the bottoms falling out. And I don't have hundreds of little plastic bags stuffed in my pantry and poking out every time I open the door. This is a practice I will continue."

Audrey Beth Kirk (Faransgirl, #572) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a beginner level Aprons badge!

"I made three half aprons out of random fabrics. I added pockets to each that were different. Then I used them for curtains for my sewing/kitchen area.

They turned out very cute. But I plan to hang them on different rods as the ones they are on don't do them justice."

Audrey Beth Kirk (Faransgirl, #572) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a beginner level Sew Wonderful badge!

"I collected sewing items from my own sewing area, my sister's sewing collection and my Mother's sewing room. I found metallic, embroidery, serger, quilting, sewing, verigated, silk, invisible and heavy duty threads. I collected fabric, embroidery, appliqué scissors, thread nippers, pinking shears and even fabric scissors that double as a dagger. I got machine, embroidery, darning, curved, appliqué, yarn, betweens(quilting), and doll needles. The pins I found had small heads, large heads, colored heads, flat heads and regular metal heads. For measuring I found cutting mats, hem measures, measuring tapes and various rulers for quilting and cutting bias binding. In the safety pins, I found very small to very large, including horse blanket pins, and even found safety pins in different colors. The most fun was the buttons. I was even lucky enough to find some in my Mom's button box that belonged to my grandmother. We had buttons that were bone, wood, shell, metal, cloth and plastic. Their colors were amazing and the sizes were from tiny for baby clothes to two inches across. Then I saved a plastic tub from the trash at the stable where I keep my horses to put it all in. Of course the threads will go back to the thread bed and the buttons back into the button box.

This was a lot of fun. It was a great time remembering things with my Mom and left me feeling a bit connected with my Grandma who died when I was 21."

Pam Cook (pamcook, #533) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a beginner level Shopping Green badge!

"I have my collection of reusable bags and they are stored in my Market Basket. I kept forgetting to take them with me until I started keeping my grocery list pad & pen in the basket, too!

Success! When I'm heading to the grocery store, farmers’ market or flea market, I pull out my market basket. I write out my list and take the basket of bags along with me."

"I made my list of ingredients to have on hand for making non-toxic cleaning solutions and I now only use vinegar to soften my clothes in the washer (instead of fabric softener). Yesterday, I ordered the wool felt balls to use in the dryer (to eliminate static cling).

I love the way my clothes and my washer smell using the vinegar! Plus, no more stupid dryer sheets floating around the house!!"

"For the past year I have been using recyclable bags for everything and anything. I have about 12 at this point and keep buying more.
At the present time I keep 4 in each of the cars and the rest at home.

I love using them, because I don't have to worry about them breaking on me."
