Kristina Nelson, (FieldsofThyme, #800) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an intermediate level What's Your Beef? badge.

We have called the organic farm and will be placing an order for an organic turkey for next Thanksgiving." |

Nancy Boyd, (NancyOH1, #2508) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a beginner level Buttoned Up badge.
"While attending a Quilt Shop Hop with a quilting friend of mine on Saturday, May 7, 2011, one of the quilt shops on our journey had a large container of buttons for $1.49 or $1.94 per scoop of different sizes and colors of buttons. Two scoops later I have a fabulous assortment of buttons to work with on my craft projects.
It turned out fabulous. I can't wait to use some of these buttons towards my next level (intermediate) and it is inspiring me to start looking for some vintage and antique buttons possibly from the Victorian Era."

"We have made a limeade drink to replace lemon lime pop.
We used limes, agave syrup to sweeten, and organic rosemary from my very own herb garden. Here is the recipe that inspired us.

So far very good. I keep them in the car so I will never forget them."

Lauren Smith, (RagDollMaker, #3033) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a beginner level Sew Wonderful badge.
"I collected buttons, needles, pins, safety pins, a variety of thread, and scissors and made a pinkeeper out of some pretty fabric.
I was successful at this and got my thread organized (which is difficult for me to take time to do!)." |

"Most of the pictures in the image I'm sending are from the bag I made especially for Sisterhood badges! :-) These are examples of a machine-done straight, flat, and French seams. The others are samples of hand-sewn overcast and running stitches.
It turned out great! I had some stumbling blocks along the way and had to rip out a few seams along the way and fix them, but I love my bag!"

Susan Chenoweth, (coloquilter, #2678) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a beginner level Farmgirl Gratitude badge.
"I started my gratitude journal in April. This project came at a perfect time. First I read Mary Jane's article on handwritting and I set a goal to improve mine. Secondly, I had been laid off of my job of nearly 20 years and I was feeling a lot of self pity. Starting over again at nearly 53 yrs old was more than I could take. Early in this task I struggled to find something to be grateful for. I found myself being grateful for food on the plate or a roof over my head, but I knew there was a greater meaning to this. As April passed the days warmed and the Colorado snows melted, I found myself sitting by my pond being grateful for the snow that had filled the pond and for the fresh crisp spring air.Grateful for the tiny buds that were popping out all over my favorite tree. I was grateful for my Farmgirl Sisters that without knowing pulled me up and lifted my sprits when I needed it most. I was grateful for their wisdom and their humor and their generous spirits. I Love my Farmgirl Peeps.
I found that I do have a lot to be grateful for. While I have never been a religious person I have found a new spirituality. I can see the existence of a greater power all around me." |

Amberly Barry McGee, (RagDollMaker, #3033) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a beginner level Shopping Green badge.
"My husband and I have been collecting reusable shopping bags for a while, because we often forget to bring them with us. We also have collected many plastic and paper bags in our forgetfulness. I liked the challenge of earning this merit badge. Due to its prompting, I have been making sure both of us have 6 bags in our vehicles at all times, which means putting them right back in the vehicles after they’ve been unloaded. I have also saved boxes for the canned foods we get at the pet store. We’ve been keeping those in our vehicles as well, so we can reuse them each time we get pet food.
It has been so nice to have less and less plastic and paper bags in the house! I have been using the paper bags to gather our newspapers each week for the recycling collection. The plastic bags are easy to reuse as trash bags for small garbage cans. I am happy to report that both stashes of those bags have decreased rapidly. It has also been nice to know that our reusable bags are already in the car when we go places, since I have been making sure they are put back right away. Now, when I’m out shopping, the biggest “inconvenience” can be that I sometimes have to go back to the car to get the bags. Not so inconvenient compared to a tidier home due to less bags!"

Candace Hampton, (houndsnhives, #2638) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a beginner level Backyard Farmer badge.
"I built a coop and very nice brooder box (with help from my dad). I then purchased 18 sweet little chicks from the local farm store. I am keeping them as organic as possible.
My sweet chicks are small chickens. They are still growing but are past the brooder stage. I am confident and happy that all 18 have grown into healthy birds on my first attempt. I am excited to see who my best layers will be."

CJ Armstrong, (ceejay48, #665) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an expert level Bee Good to Your Mother Earth badge.
"We have always been and continue to be conscientious of the products we buy and use in our home, yard and garden.
We strive to be watchful of buying anything that has toxic components or eliminate things that do. We have made sure to purchase lead-free garden hoses and other products for our yard/garden.
We don't have a constructed fence, except for wire fencing around our section of a small apple orchard which serves as a llama pen. There are no fences that are painted.
We have planted aspen trees, Colorado Blue Spruce trees, yew trees and Russian sage. Not only are they beautiful but they do serve as living fences through "pleaching".
We have been composting for over a year and have benefitted by getting more than 10 5-gallon pails of the "good stuff". We will continue this practice so that we have compost to add to our garden every year.
It's always encouraging to know that the choices we make for our home and garden are good for the environment and good for us. It's also rewarding to enjoy the benefit of the money saved and reduction of "junk" contribution to our planet.
Photo is of one area where we have our aspen tree "fence."

Kristina Nelson, (FieldsofThyme, #800) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an intermediate level Farmgirl Shutterbugs badge.
"I took over 100 pictures to try and emulate the photographer, Sam Abell.
I posted over 10 photos on the forum to share with other farmgirls. I also borrowed read the books, "Tao of Photography" by Phillippe L. Cross and S.I. Shapiro, "Sam Abell, The Photographic Life" by Leah Bendavid-Val, and "Better Photo Basics, The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Taking Photos Like the Pros" by Jim Miotke.
I think that Sam Abell captures life in his photographs, which most people typically fail to see. It was interesting to read that he is from northwest Ohio.
I tried to capture what people fail to see. I enjoy taking photos of old buildings, houses and barns, and nature." |

Kristina Nelson, (FieldsofThyme, #800) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an intermediate level Unprocessed Kitchen badge.
"We have been switching many food and drink choices, to organic ingredients. We've been doing this for the last 12-13 years.
We just made our first batch of homemade "wheat thins" and loved them. We used whole wheat flour (preservative free) that we buy from a working stone mill. We used organic ingredients and topped the crackers with sea salt. We don't usually buy sweet snack items. We do favor dips and crackers or chips.
I used to love McDonald's Sweet tea. We now make tea with organic green tea bags and organic sugar or other organic sweetener. We use refillable and washable, BPA free cups when we travel now.
We grow our own herbs so we took a dip recipe from Nabisco, and now use organic cream cheese, organic mozzarella cheese, home grown and chemical free, tomatoes and green onion. We plan to grow garlic for the first time this year. We can now use our organic wheat thins to use with dips such as these. Here is the original recipe: http://www.nabiscoworld.com/recipes/recipeprinterfriendly.aspx?recipe_id=64365
We have also made chips by baking Kale with olive oil and sea salt.
To replace popsicles from the store, we have made them ourselves with organic fruit juices.
Family gatherings typically include homemade ice cream vs. store bought ice cream also."

Judy King, (Patchwork Peace, #932) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a beginner level Farmgirl Grammar badge.
"I scoured the dictionary looking for 14 words to familiarize myself for the two-week period. A couple of the words I'm adding to my vocabulary are: expiate, impinge, weft, scree and yurt.
It's kind of fun. For the next two weeks I'm going to concentrate on adding words that I'm unfamiliar with in books I read as well as words I hear. I think it will be more practical and the words are ones I'm more likely to use." |

Susan Chenoweth, (coloquilter, #2678) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a beginner level Aprons badge.
"We had a guest speaker at our May Farmgirls meeting. Mrs Lux is the mother of one of our members. She had a wonderful program on clothespin bag aprons. She showed us her favorite pattern and demonstrated how in the morning the farm wife would get up and put on the apron in to start breakfast. Next she would start a load of laundry and while it washed she would use the apron to collect the eggs. She then filled the pockets with clothespins and off to hang laundry. As the laundry dried she could use the apron for a sunbonnet while she worked in her yard.
The aprons all turned out so cute! I have now made 3 of them, 2 for Farmgirls sisters that couldn't attend that meeting and one for myself." |

"I volunteer at a community farm that delivers fresh produce to 13 local food banks and has it's own farm stand as well. All items are "sold" by donations.
I LOVE the farm and spend 3-4 days a week there during the summer. During the school year, we cut back to twice a week." |

Pilar Stevens, (retasos2, #2498) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a beginner level Bustin' Out badge.
"We tried the following organic food for over a month: celery, carrots, potatoes and apples.
We did not like the celery and apples. The celery was too biter and could not be eaten raw. Hubby said that the apples were tasteless. But the carrots and potatoes were a big hit." |

Cheryle Duffy-Lehrer, (shabbyms, #604) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a beginner level Gaining Ground badge.
"Read the book "Worms Eat my Garbage," by Mary Appelhof. Our chapter decided as a project this month to make a wormery so that we could learn to vermicomposting for a homemade kitchen style bin. I picked up two more books-composting for dummies and the compost specialist by David Squire. Both were full of great ideas for all things compost. Our bins were a nice small way to introduce those who have not yet tried and especially those whom had children to get involved in composting. We made the bin by drilling the correct size holes in the correct areas, filled first with paper, then soil, mulched leaves.
May I just say wonderful. Everyone had a blast. Of course when you put a power tool in our girls hands - well, lets just say they really get into the projects! I also gave everyone a goodie bag to take which consisted of their own dozen worms and a carpenters pencil...a girl needs her tools right?"

Cheryle Duffy-Lehrer, (shabbyms, #604) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a beginner level Crochet badge.
"I learned from one of the other members how to crochet. Tracy taught us all how to make the basic stitch and I followed the directions and made the dishcloth on my lunch breaks for the rest of the week. Tracy is my neighbor and she helped me to finish it on the weekend.
It turned out lovely and may I just say I found it to be rather relaxing. I work in very noisy shop with loud heavy equipment so I found myself looking forward to this time of the day."

Kristina Nelson, (FieldsofThyme, #800) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an expert level Unprocessed Kitchen badge.
"For the last several years, our family has been taking organically made dishes to family gatherings.
Our families get together about 2 times a year, and our family encourages the others to stop using processed foods.
One of our first guilty pleasures, 13 years ago, was frozen french fries. We now make those by slicing home grown potatoes, and tossing them in home grown (dried, chopped) rosemary and a bit of olive oil. We then roast them in the oven. The first dish we made organic, for a family party, was baked beans. I make them by soaking dry beans overnight and baking them with organic ingredients in my crock pot.
We have also shared recipes to make our own dry mixes such as taco mix, instead of buying the packets you buy in stores.
We have also taken extended family and friends, home canned salsa (using home grown ingredients), home canned jellies, and homemade dips organically.
Last year we shared our refrigerator pickles (from home grown cucumbers, dill etc.), to replace processed ones from the store. Other items we made organically include peanut butter, mayonnaise, tomato sauce, noodles, angel food cake and wheat thins." |

Emily Hack, (alterationsbyemily, #2951) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a beginner level Farmgirl Grammar badge.
"I started by really breaking down my sentences. I wanted to make sure I was enforcing what I was saying. I also started keeping track of my Unfamiliar word of the day. For two weeks I learned new words and used them in sentences daily.
I have expanded my vocabulary and worked on my ‘I’s and ‘me’s. The most difficult word that I did was Zeitgeist: the spirit of the time; the general intellectual and moral state or temper characteristic of any period of time. My husband did a double take at that one while I was describing something from the civil war." |

Emily Hack, (alterationsbyemily, #2951) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a beginner level Entrepreneurial Spirit badge.
"I ordered the book “Your First Business Plan,” by Joseph Covello and Brian Hazelgren. I wanted to make sure that I had a focused business idea. The business involved a ton of breakdown, making the product myself and the materials to do it. I had to understand how much time and investment it would be.
The official Business of Alterations by Emily Hack is well on its way now, more focused than ever. I am glad to have it on paper and moving forward." |
