Aunt Patty, you and Stu are in our hearts. Stella is sending our love your way. She carried little Josephine around all day yesterday, wouldn't have anything to do with her other dollies. Except to let them play with Josephine.

Patricia called me this afternoon and Stu is not any better. They still don't have a permanent room for him so he's in a room in the ER. They are hoping to get him in a room today. Patricia will only be able to see him about 2 hours a day. But the doctor that they talked to today said that she feels she can help him. I feel so sorry for both of them. Poor Patricia is just worn out as she has been taking him back and forth to the ER and doctors for the last month. She sounded very tired and frazzled on the phone today. We'll all just keep praying for them!

I talked to Patricia tonight. She said that Stu is at Oregon Health Sciences University in a private room. There isn't much change and all this will take time. But she did tell me to send everyone her love. She said that Farmgirl prayers are all that has kept her going.

My dear sisters, I don't know how to thank you any more than I have, but thank you again anyway. Stu was transferred to OHSU's psychiatric ward last night for an unknown time. At this point, I believe the diagnosis is severe depression but his regular psyciatrist won't be there until Monday so I will know more then.
This is a place where there are no handles on the doors and locks everywhere on everything. There is no light switches on the walls. My purse is confiscated when I arrive and given back when I leave. I find it interesting that the walls in Stuie's room are painted blue.
Stuie just wants to die. He has terrible guilt and feels he is a burden to me and I would be better off without him. He feels worthless and that the situation will never change. Left to himself, he said he would swallow every pill in our sizable collection. I'm telling you all this because I know you're probably curious about what goes on in the psych ward and that you're interested in what is happening with Stuie. 50 years ago I probably wouldn't have uttered a word and pretended he had something physical but times have changed and mental illness is no longer viewed as a personal failing. What I have been researching tells me it is a result of brain chemistry mis-firing and precipitated by Stu's past.
Suffice it to say that his parents offered no love at all and told him constantly that "anything less than perfection is nothing". Lucky he had a genius mind - or unlucky for him because genius is a hair away from madness. He never learned how to love until he met me. He says I am the only person he has every connected with on that level and I believe him.
Add to this the fact that he was closed up in Adademia (he calls it his "ivory tower" and his "escae from reality") at Cambridge for 25 years and you have the basis of a big problem. At Cambridge he didin't have to do anything for himself - he had people to do everything. Ten years ago when his mother died and he came back to California, he was suddenly thrust into the real world and had no idea how to deal with it. He spent every penny he had (and he had a lot of pennies) trying to keep his mother alive and when she died, he realized he should have saved something for himself. Good thing I was there at that point.
From that point to today, he was a failure at just about everything he tried. He sabitoged (sp) every job opportunity he got until he was fired by all three of them (three jobs in 9 years) and his self-worth got lower and lower until he just bottomed out.
So that's the story.Visiting hours are 2-8 weekends and 4-8 on weekdays. Stu says he feel like he is in prison.
Quite frankly, I don't see how they're going to get him out of this big deep hole he's in. I've been blue-lighting and "faith not fear" ing like crazy but right now I'm kinda low on hope. And pysically, I'm having a very tough time.
It's good to know you guys got my back.
So that's the latest Challenge report.
Much love, Patricia

Oh Patricia, do not give up. I am sure it is very tough on you especially knowing about what you do and how deeply you connect to others. Please try the BACH REMEDY RESCUE, it does wonder. Use it for you and for him. Try to find a little place where you are safe and can heal. If you get the chance to go to a health store where they sell them all, look up to MUSTARD as well, it is recommended for depression. Would love to be close enough to hold you tight and give you a big hugs. Will go to France very soon and will send more Holly water to you. Love, Corinne

Patricia, don't despair. There are many things that can help, some medicinal and some not. Wrapping you in rose light and sending you strength. Mental illness is not a crime nor is it a failing, it is an illness like any other. Help is on the way. And he is in the right place for the moment. You need to take care of your self and try to do things for you and not worry your self ragged hon, ok? Hugs Annika |

Patricia, I know what you are facing seems to be so without hope. But, please believe me there is hope. This could actually save his life and give him a life that he has always wanted and you have wanted for him. When life hits bottom so hard like it has for you and Stuie, it is hard sometimes to see an answer, I have had family members who have been through this. and I myself lived for many years of my life struggling with depression and incapacitating anxiety. I never had to be hospitalized, but my Aunt did. She was so ill I really didn't think that she would ever be well. She was in a totally unresponsive state and pulling imaginary spiders out of the air. She tried to cut her own throat. It was horrible. She was in the hospital for about a month.Same type as Stuie. It was an eerie feeling when the doors closed and locked.Stuie is right it was a prison. One to protect the patients from themselves.Funny, the Dr.'s felt that her problems stemed from problems very similar to your husbands. She was in intense physcotherapy and they found the right combination of drugs for her. When she got out she still had a lot of therapy to go through and her meds to take. But, she was 100% better than when she went in. That was almost 40 years a go. So imagine how much more they can do now to help today! I am so glad that you wanted to tell all of us the truth of what is going on. Believe me it will help you to talk about your fears and feelings. Nowadays people aren't as judgemental as they once were. It is an illness like cancer or diabetes or any other,no one would be ashamed of them and should't be about mental illness either. If you do encounter people who react like that, just know in your heart that they are to be pitied, they are the ones who truly do have a problem. By all of us being honest I really feel it helps us and everyone else to know that someone else has been through these things and there is a light at the end. I will pray for you and Stuie everyday. Please let us know his progress and how you both are doing. May God Bless you both,
Love and prayers for healing, Mary Jane

Patricia -
I'm sending hugs and prayers your way...here's hoping that the doctors will find the right combination of therapy and meds to bring Stu out of that black hole. Depression is so very hard on the loved ones as well, and I hope that you will continue gaining strength from all our thoughts and prayers.
Thanks for keeping us up-to-date, and let Stu know that we are pulling for him!
