There is so much snow in our backyard that the dogs can just walk over the fence. My hubby has been out there twice this week shoveling, but the wind keeps blowing it back in. It's very frustrating! Especially when one of the Shelties refuses to be caught when he's on the lose. You can't catch him for anything! The other 2 Shelties come right in the house, but I have to carry my little mutt puppy in- and boy is he heavy! He is maybe a foot tall if he's lucky, but he weighs close to 30 pounds! And most of it's in his butt, which makes carrying him difficult. So right now I have 8 dogs in the house, as well as the baby goat. I pretty much have to refill the water bowl every 15 minutes.

When my dog first came home from the pound, he did not listen! I used treats to train him. He'll do anything if he hears the rattle of the treat bag.
What other breeds do you have?

I have 6 Shih Tzus, 3 Shelties, my Shih Tzu/German shorthaired pointer/lab pup, a German shorthaired pointer/lab mix (now you know where the pup came from :) and a Border Collie/lab mix. The Sheltie that doesn't listen when he's loose is totally fine any other time.

By the way, you'd have to call me two dogs per acre. :)

Heather- my suggestion is to put your run away on a tie-out rope/leash while he potties so that you can enforce the "come" command. Having this much snow certainly has it's difficulties, doesn't it!

I found out this morning that the dogs are using the snow drifts to get into the chicken coop. I have found one dead duck and one dead chicken, plus 2 ducks are missing and I don't know if any more chickens are missing because they are huddled together in their house. I tried looking for the ducks hoping they maybe flew somewhere, but I didn't find them. I'm not sure what dog is the culprit, but I suspect my 2 farm dogs. They have been known to torment a loose chicken or duck. They acted really guilty, too.

This snow sure sucks, doesn't it Heather? Because of the cold we have had to have our dog in the house (she usually sleeps on the inclosed back porch) and she must have gotten into something in the trash because she went potty in the house in three spots and I have been scrubbing and scrubbing to get rid of the spot and smell. Yuck!!! Even though she has always been an outside dog she is housetrained and hasn't done this before except once or twice on the porch when she must have needed to go pretty bad.
Does your sheltie run away from your property or just run from you when he knows that you want him to come to you? Maybe he thinks it is a game and just being naughty.

P.S. Just curious to see if you ever received my snail mail letter. I know life can be busy but have had a little trouble with my mail lately so wanted to make sure.

Yep, I got your letter and I'm planning on getting caught up on replies this weekend. Sullivan and I have been sick this week, so I haven't been doing much. About the Sheltie-he totally thinks it's a game. He doesn't go anywhere- he just runs around the house and behind the garage. The two big dogs have been put in the barn because now they won't stay out of the chicken coop. My husband was outside all afternoon shoveling in the backyard and didn't have time to do by the chickens. He heard 6-10 inches of snow for Monday. I hope not!
