Mark Wednesday, Feb. 20, on your calendar as "Lunar Eclipse Night," for if the weather is fair you should have no difficulty observing a total eclipse of the moon.
The eclipse will be visible wherever the moon is above the horizon during the time frame that the eclipse is taking place. As it turns out, North and South America will turned toward the moon and will be in excellent position for this sky show.
Europe, Africa and a part of western Asia will also be able to see the eclipse, although for these regions the event will take place in hours just before sunrise on the morning of Feb. 21.
All told, given clear skies, about three billion potential eclipse viewers will be able to partake in the spectacle of the full moon becoming completely immersed in the Earth's shadow.
This will be the third total lunar eclipse within the past year. The previous two favored different parts of North America, but this one will be readily visible from start-to-finish across much of the continent, weather permitting.
The total phase will last 51-minutes and begins at 10:01 p.m. EST (7:01 p.m. PST).
Because some of the sunlight striking the Earth is diffused and scattered by our atmosphere, the Earth's shadow is not completely dark. Typically there are coppery red and orange hues cast over the moon at and near totality from sunlight refracted from our atmosphere around the edge of the Earth, giving the moon the appearance of an eerie glowing ball.
As a bonus, during the eclipse the moon will be situated, in our sky, near the planet Saturn and the bright bluish star Regulus in the constellation of Leo. The effect will be to create a uniquely beautiful triangle in the sky consisting of the totally eclipsed moon, a bright naked-eye planet and one of the 21 brightest stars in the sky.

Coming home, I saw the big full moon on a clear night and I went "Oh the eclipse is tonight"...and I realized "Duh, it's tomorrow." I hope that we have another clear night. This past Saturday, the moon had a glowing ring around it from something with snow crystals or something like that according to the weather folks here.
I've been wanting to do some moon photography and since it is a clear night and a full moon...may run out there with my telephoto lens and tripod tonight...and plenty of clothes to keep warm! BRRR

I do! I see it! Thanks for letting us know, MaryBeth. The boys and I just love to see these wonderful things. And what a wonderful photo you took. We live smack dab in the middle of the woods, but hopefully we'll be able to get to a clearing to watch.

So, has anybody else noticed changes in sleep or "moon" cycles surrounding this crazy moon event? I haven't been sleeping so well - waking up a lot! And, lots of seemingly frivolous, chaotic dreams. Last night, I dreamed of a bright yellow hen who came out of my chicken house and rolled over so that I would pet her belly Also, my cycle is way off (um, late). I took a test, and it said I'm in the clear...hmmm....so I'm blaming the moon!

Great Photo Mary Beth! I went outside to take a photo, but our neighbors big tall tree was blocking my view just as I remembered when it would be up.  I'm hoping the clouds tonight won't interfere with the eclipse..and the trees!

It was pretty neat seeing the different phases of the eclipse. It started around 8PM and I kept checking back to see the eclipse. Then when it was a full eclipse, it turn a tiny bit red, but not much. The funny thing was that there were a few planes flying by it while I was taking a few photos. I haven't looked to see if any of them turned out any good. Did anyone get any cool photos?
And for some odd reason while watching American Idol and the moon, I bursted out singing "Total Eclipse of the Heart". haha.

| I didn't have a tripod either. Mine is the result of holding it still on my deck railing and not breathing. For every good shot I got, I had about ten more that I erased. Especially since one of my dogs kept messing with me! |

I caught my husband moon gazing last night when he put our 4 year old son to bed. I asked him what they were doing & he said "Watching the total eclipse of the moon". I gazed out the window on and off all evening, enjoying this rare event too. Lucky for us, we had a beautiful, clear night. I really enjoyed the pictures you farmgirls took. I decided not to brave the frigid temps and take any. I can always gaze at the ones you ladies provided!

We saw it, my son was a little freaked out by it.Of course thats cause the stupid neighbor said that "the aliens" were going to come out of the moon and suck our brains out, stupid.
It was pretty though

I actually didn't go outside to take the photos. I realized looking out our bedroom window that I could get a better view of it. So I set up my tripod and shot from in there. I've seen some really neat shots of it. Pretty cool to see something like that. I still keep meaning to head to Cumberland Falls and take photos of the moonbow...it is a rainbow that appears when there is a full moon. It is the only one here on this side of earth and the other one is in Zambia at Victoria Falls. I grew up not far from Cumberland Falls and never got the chance to see the moonbow in person. That will be my "things to do in 2008" list. haha.

A friend and I walked down to the beach and watched it from start to finish. I'd never seen an eclipse before. It was really very magical.
Did anyone see the red tinges when it was all covered? Gorgeous!
And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk to blossom |
