I have a cotton duck couch that just needs a good cleaning. I steamed it a few weeks back and I swear, it looks dirtier ...it is "saddle" colored, though, so it's hard to tell. With the 4 dogs who have just been disgusting this year with the winter season we've had, I was thinking I might be able to unzip them off and put them in the front loader on gentle and then hang dry them. Does that sound crazy? It just seems like it would work--I mean, they're cotton, so if I did on cold, what would be the harm?
Any thoughts?

I used to do that all the time with my couch cushion covers wayyy back when I had a cloth covered couch. I'd add a bit of pinesol to the washing machine and then the regular detergent. It cleaned it real well.

I've washed mine in a cold gentle cycle and tossed them in the dryer on AIR for a few minutes to fluff them up. Then I put them back on while still slightly damp. Putting a plastic bag over the cushion helps slide the cover on easily. Put the closed end of the bag on the end the zipper or closure is. That way to can pull it right out after the cushion is inside.
I've also hung covers to dry and then pressed them before reassembling.
Life with pets eh?

I have really tightly stuffed cushions- do you think I would be able to get the cover back on? I am terrified to take it off :(
I have used my home carpet cleaner on my couch though, I would prefer to wash them in the washer.

I have always thrown my cushion covers in the washer on warm and then tossed them in the dryer. have never had a problem. They are cotton and I have not had a shrinkage problem either. They look so much better. I have steam clean the rest and sometimes it looks worse because my upholstery attachment doesn't always have good suction for getting the water back out. it looks bad because the set is light blue.

You all have given me the courage to try. It was a bit of a squeeze getting it off, but I think I have a few ideas to make that easier when I put it back in. It is now in the wash. I only did one cushion so I could make sure I could get the others back on!

Thanks girls...Rhonda, thanks for the tip of putting them on a little damp. That makes good sense with cotton, and stretching into shape. I'm glad to know other folks think like me, in that steaming just isn't all it's cracked up to be!

Mine turned out really well, but I'm with Alee--how to put the whole sofa in there!!! I'm a little bummed that one stain in particular didn't come out. Our little beagle, Daisy, has this thing about "licking" herself to sleep and she licks the couch in one spot. No matter how much I do, I can't seem to get her saliva out. It's just a tad darker than the color, so no biggee, but I notice it :)

Alee,
An easy way to get the cover back on is wrap in plastic or a plastic bag,
get your vacuum clear hose attachment and suck the air out of the cushion.
Keeping the plastic tight around the hose.
They get really small and then insert into the cover and turn off the vacuum and it start to expand. Works slick, we used that at work to stuff cushions.
Just a idea

I will have to try that next time, but I will have to buy bigger bags. I tried to do something like that with my current bags and they were just too small! I will need yard leaf sized ones!
