This is my first time canning.I followed the directions but I still have question.I canned tomatoes in their own juices(whole). Is it normal for the tomatoes to rise to the top? The seal is good.I want to make sure I have done it right. Thanks, Alicia

They will do that when you don't have as many tomatoes in the jar as you possibly can, I always push the tomatoes down with a spoon and PACK as many in there as I can, the juice comes to the top and kind of spills everywhere when you do this, but I cut them up before putting in and have never canned "whole: tomatoes. Good Luck!!

if you do raw pack it is likely to do that too. I cut mine into quarters usually before canning. I had the same problem with whole ones..but they still tasted great!!

I let a lot of juice drain before I heat and pack them. It helps but I still usually end up with an inch of only juice in the bottom.

Thanks everyone,I was so worried I did something wrong.I used Roma tomatoes that were very small so I couldn't see cutting them up.It took me all afternoon to do them all but I got everything done.My son helped and was always saying "Are you sure that is right?" I think he was more paranoid than I am.:) Alicia

Hang in there Alicia, tomatoes were the first canning I ever tried too, I don't think you can go wrong as long as you process them long enough and you check for seals after they are done,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,GOOD LUCK!!
