I stumbled across the groups while looking for crocheted washcloth patterns, wow! Farmer girls! I'm very excited.
So, hi! I am Steph I'm 36 and live in central NH on our small farm, Hemlock Hollow (or Hemlock Hollow Farm, we've only chickens now and I just don't feel like we've attained "farm" status, at least publicly).
I have one child, a daughter whom I refer to as "Newt" online. She's 5 nearing 6 and born to be a farmgirl.
We've lived here for two years this coming December. We live rurally in the western part of the state on just over 5 acres, mostly wooded. We've a long way to go to achieve our goal of self-sufficiency. For now we raise chickens, 15 layers at the moment. We hope to add a Dexter cow next year and pigs after that. Newt is anxious for a piglet to raise so in a couple more years we'll introduce a piglet or two.
For now I tend my organic gardens and continue to expand those beds as well as put in more fruit trees and soft fruit bushes. I was born and raised in the capital city area but I am a coutnrygirl at heart and come from farmer stock so I figure I stand a decent chance of getting this right? I've had experience with family farms growing up but doing this on my own is another ball of wax. |

| land prices are a bit high here, property taxes are much worse! I love in a tiny town so we have low property taxes and really have to do for ourselves as a result (which is fine by me). New England is a very expensive place to live, from research done recently by a friend, she mentioned that Vermont was the cheaper of the three states-NH, VT and Maine to live. Land that I looked at there was cheaper than here but work is hard to come by. Then factor in our nasty winters that hang on forever and fuel prices that are astronomical. Self-sufficiency is getting to be a must here unless you have the $$ to fork out for rising costs. A wood stove and a few acres of timber will do you just fine though. Still, despite my negativity, I love this place. I've been here all my nearly 37 years and most of my family have been here for centuries. It's a beautiful place but hard to live here sometimes. |

glad to have you. i've never been anywhere near the NE part of the country-it sounds so different from where i live (that sounded dumb, didn't it?)

Hi Steph,
It sounds like you're a very busy lady. I've always wanted to go to the New England area, but I generally don't get out of WI. I've always heard it's a very pretty part of the country. You're going to love this website. It's a lot of fun. You'll make lots of new friends in no time. |

Hi I joined this sight a year ago and I love it. You dont have to have a farm to be apart of this sight or enjoy it. I live in N.H. too. I live up near keene, N.H. My husband and I have three cats, one dog and chickens. Not as many chickens as you though. Welcome. Laura |

Laura,
You live near Keene??? We've been wanting to maybe move back east (we both are from there) and have been seriously looking at Keene and the surrounding towns. What can you tell me about it? My dh would only go if he could transfer with his company, which is a possibility. I could probably get a job anywhere, although the pay might not be so good - but maybe compared to Idaho, it would be way better. Sorry to jabber, but I'm so excited that someone near Keene is on the forum.

Welcome, Stephanie - Isn't it great to find a group of farmgirls! I think you can safely assume that your farm has attained "farm status" - no matter what it's state! It's a condition of the heart.....

Hi Stephanie and welcome!! My grandparents had a little piece of property on Silver Lake and we would go up there in the summer to stay. I love New Hampshire. My favorite part of the trip was to see who could see the Old Man in the Mountain first! Can't imagine what it is like without him. I grew up in Mass- it's nice to have another fellow New Englander here! I love that you have a famgirl daughter- try as I might, mine will not even cotton to the idea at all! She is 17 and definitely has a different view on things than her mother. But, time hasn't run out yet!

Welcome Stephanie! I have read your blog before and so enjoy it!
We live not so far away in northeastern Vermont and are also working towards self-sufficiency with a home based lifestyle. My husband has joined us full time at home for a month now. We are saying our prayers that we will be able to make it financially - with our handcrafts, a few side jobs for him (property management), and our market gardens.

welcome stephanie .. you're gonna' love it here! we lived (back east/up nawth) for many years and loved it) .. but i'm here to tell ya' honey-doo .. you are SOOOO right about expensive living in that part of the country. We went from paying $8,000 a year taxes on our home and four acres (we were blessed to live on 600 feet of beautiful river-front property .. not far from the Chesapeake Bay) .. to only $600. a year on a farm and 30 acres in Winnie the Pooh's Thousand Acres of Woods here in beautiful KENTUCKY! Lifelong family and friends will most likely keep you from venturing too far at this point in your life .. but if you ever do decide to wander looking for another little piece of heaven on earth .. oh chile' .. come to Kentucky! I'll be happy to show you around! xo, frannie

Hi we live in Sullivan that is a fifteen minute drive to keene. I work at a grocery store in Rindge. That is a fourtyfive minute drive. I have looked for jobes in keene and it would mean taking a dollar or two cut in pay. Most of the jobes in keene are offering seven dollars an hour. Now with the price of gas I am being forced to take that pay cut. I really cant believe a city like keene pays so poorly. The gas prices for regular gas is around $2.87.
