Our new house has a fairly large area with tomatoes. They had poles in the ground but the tomatoes were on the ground. Am I supposed to do something with them? And, will the tomatoes come back next year or do I have to plant again? I am so new to this.

Are the plants still alive? I seriously doubt that the plants would come back after freezing weather so, you would have to plant them again. They probably had the tomato plants tied to the poles until the end of the season. Many people leave the plants laying on the ground to rot back into the soil and they till them under in the spring.
