The "sick bed" ..... that's what we call our sofa bed in the living room. It's not a malicious term, actually very endearing.
I know that when someone is sick they are supposed to be isolated. I just can't do that. I do the exact opposite. I put them smack dab in the middle of everything. We move the furniture out of the way and open up the sofa bed in the living room. I put extra soft sheets on it and an old quilt. Whichever girl it is determines what gets placed on the side table....
When Kristin is sick she'll ask for the "sick bed" without any hesitation. She likes to have all her stuffed animals around her and the tv clicker.....she'll watch lots of tv/movies.
Nicole, who is a bit older (14) won't ask for the "sick bed" but I just know she wants it. I'll ask her if she'd like it pulled out and she'll poke her bottom lip sadly and nod her head. She has special pillows that she likes to have. She likes to have books and sketching supplies nearby.
Of course, no matter which one is sick, I am right there. I gather my books, catalogs, hand/needle work, and lay down right next to them. I never get anything done in the house but that's okay. I love those moments with them. Even today with the teenager, she wants me to stay in the bed with her. It's actually very relaxing for me.
Recently, I woke up not feeling well. I entered the living room and found the 'sick bed' set up for me! My girls went all out to make it just right.....pillows, books, journal, kleenex, water, etc... And they laid down with me all day. (I'm sure they were thrilled to avoid doing school and chores more than they were actually wanting to lay down)
What routines or rituals do you have when someone is sick or has a boo boo?

At my house, the sick bed is mama's bed. It started when I ws a girl and my mama had serious kidney problems. My sister and I lived around and in Mama's bed and if we were sick it was just natural to climb in with her. This past spring when I was living with my mama and my pa, I found myself climbing into Mama's bed a couple times...it just feels so safe!
Now my kids climb into my bed when they are sick. Today two of mine and I are trying to cough our lungs out and once we get the healthy kiddos off to school, we will all climb into mama's sick bed and take a nice nap. I will also feed them saltine crackers and cheese, my dad's favorite comfort food. And when they are getting restless, I will let them draw or craft with no *two piece of paper* limit that is usualy placed on thier art.
What we write today slipped into our souls some other day when we were alone and doing nothing.

Our sick bed is the sofa too! There's where my mom always put all of us when we were sick. That's where I've alway put my kids. You have to have the kleenex, a small bag to use for trash, a glass of juice or Seven UP, a big fluffy pillow, and our special fuzzy blanket.
But I love my sofa even when I'm not sick. It's great for naps!

Same here! My kids have kept the vigil...whenver I have been sick they make up the couch for me with heating pad, pillows, blankies, and my Bible. They make me tea and they rub my feet...how did I get so spoiled? They are just doing what they have always seen. I felt bad when they were little and sick, but I loved having somebody to "fuss" over! I made homemade soup, tea and herbal concoctions that they didn't much appreciate; he he he,but they loved having no chores, stacks of books and their favorite toys up on the couch with them for the day. Sheer luxury when you live on a ranch and there's so many chores every day. It's been cconfirmed- they look forward to getting sick! They hardly ever do, but when they do they take full advantage of "the sick bed" *U*

Sick bed in my house was Mama bed. The kids would climb in blanket and pillow, remote in hand, 7up, crackers and Mrs. Grasses noodle soup and mom right their all day to tend to every need. No work was done all day by me. Just snuggle and cuddle. Even when they were in high school I would call in sick and stay with them. They in turn would do the same for me. Now that they are all grown and out on their own I am glad I took the time to be with them. To this day I still lay in bed, blankets and pillows, 7up, and my new comfort is linen spray with matching lotion. My DH will baby me all he can. Good thing he works in the basement I get lots of babying.

We use out bedroom. We set up the hot vaporizer with the Vicks liquid medication in the cup, I throw on an extra quilt, I put my sinus bean bag in the microwave, I usually bring a bottle of juice in, watered down by half, lots of trashy mags, and I wear NOTHING!!! I like to snuggle in my down. I also use my essential oils to breathe in and I like to put a little lavendar on my upper chest to relax. I swear, I get better faster that DH because I do all of this. I feel better in just 12 hours or less.

I love the way our babies "repay" us with their love. My little ones are so good at carring for mama. If I am not feeling well, they keep my drink full (sometimes over exuberantly), bring me extra blankets, and at least attempt to do for themselves. When my oldest was about 5 I was down with a broncial infection and he would answer the phone for me and anounce, "My mama doesn't feel well. You have to call back later." It wasn't the best phone ediquite in the world, but he was doing his best and I certantly didn't feel well enough to correct him.

when my kids were little and they got sick, the first thing I would do was hot up a quilt in the dryer to bundle them in. I did this mostly at night when they couldn't sleep. Somehow being swaddled in a warm quilt had a calming effect, and it allowed them to sleep. We also made little sick bays in the living room, piling pillows on the floor, making nests for watching the TV or listening to music. It was always good for them to be right in the thick of it....Karin |

I went on a treasure hunt to find conversations I've had with all y'all special farmgirls. I found this thread from 2008.
Today, 6 years later, my oldest is married. My son-in-law has now received the 'sick bed' treatment. At first, when I offered the special attention, he shrugged and thought it was silly. After a few minutes of feeling very flu-ish he changed his mind. He had a full 2 days of the 'sick bed' love.
One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt." |

When I was young and sick, I would stay in the bed by the window (my sister's bed) with coloring books and my favorite dinosaur book. Mom would bring me meals or I would eat at the table if I could get up. My dad would come to see any of us who were sick and ask us what he could bring us that would make us feel better. I remember once asking for apple cider. He would bring it home after work and would make a big deal about serving it to me. Funny that it would work so well.

Today, my son-in-law actually asked to come to my house and be babied and have the sick bed treatment today. That blesses my heart! lol
It's cold and rainy outside. It's chilly inside. I've got him wrapped up in blankets on the sofa. I'm serving him whatever he asks for. He also gets complete control of the t.v.

| I have Lyme disease and the couch is my sick bed. The disease comes and goes. If my husband finds me on the couch asleep with a blanket he knows I am not well. Our poor couch is soon going to be show wear, I have been doing this off and on for 6 years. Nice part is, I don't have to visit is as often as in the past. Hubby is rarely sick, but he would say his sick bed is his recliner and a blanket. |
