this evening .. i was looking for a movie to watch and came across the nature channel .. a show about the elephants at amboseli in africa. i saw the woman we met (cynthia .. forget her last name) .. she went to africa over 25 years ago to volunteer for a month-long program ... fell in love with working with african elephants .. returned to new york . .packed her bags . .and moved to africa forever! we were invited to her camp (which was a real treat because it is not open to tourists .. part of that wonderful TRAVEL LEARN program!) tonight's program was about an injured elephant who had a baby .. she was injured by a spear .. she was treated (which they don't always do in the wild!) .. but her injuries still led to her death. it showed the elephant's 'family' returning to her bones. brought back so many memories. it is believed by the masai that the elephant is the only animal with a soul.
