out here in the desert we don't get any birds landing in our yard :-( I sure miss them. When we lived in CA we had a deck off of our master bedroom. THe birds would come, the squirells.. and the goats would climb onto the railing to eat the leaves off the trees. They sold our house (we were renters) and we had to move. We couldn't find anything local even the same price we were paying if not cheaper. That was the saddest day of my life. Well, it got sadder the moment we pulled up to our new house. it was the junkiest modular home on the crudiest property you had ever seen. and we pulled up in the middle of a windstorm!
Thankfully we moved a few months later into a nicer home- but we still hate it here.
I miss the birds!

Blessings, Debra

debra darlin' .. what are some of the good things about where you live? i've heard so many wonderful tales about dessert moonlights .. and the miles and miles of rippling sand. i must admit that i love the 'green green fields and hills' and didn't realize how much i missed them until moving back from the mountains of colorado where green is much sparser than on the east coast. but sometimes i read of 'artists' loving the desert. i sure would miss the birds too .. what other 'critters' are in your area in abundance? xo

we see rabbits often I suppose, though usually just running across the road every few days. You never see them just playing in your yard. There are not any critters you see like that here. I love it when the snow covers the mountains- they look like icebergs shooting out of the ground. I miss green grass. I miss Oregon (we lived there for 11 years), I loved the smell after a rain. My dh never wants to move back there because of the rain :-(
We had planned to move to MO this summer. It will only happen if dh can increase his income and heal quickly..

I feel so bad for the birds in this weather. I think I am going to go buy a bag of high energy bird feed for our birds around here. The snow is so deep I wonder how they find anything to eat at all!

I take hot water out a couple of times a day, hope to find a heater for bird bath. I also make my own suet blocks pretty cheaply.
I get a fair variety of birds to my feeders as well as squirrels and rabbits who eat what drops on the ground. I have also seen phesants out there. I am planning for next year to move some of the feeders and put up some new ones.

My question is does anyone grow things that would make good feed for the birds. I plan on having sunflowers so will have those, what else would you suggest I plant. I have lots of space and am putting in corn which I believe I can feed to my goats for treats and also for the squirrels.

Thanks Barbara

Some early migraters heading back north have stopped by here in the Gulf Coast area. They kinda' sprinkle in, hang out a while and then POOF one day they're gone. I also have birds that choose not to leave. So, we leave feed out year round. I know the "books" say don't do that because you'll intice birds to not do their natural thing and leave. But, the times I've removed food there were still birds that stayed. I'd like to think I'm providing a service to those birds that just can't make the trip.

Growing food for the birds......Your sunflowers will be great. How about berries? I don't know what grows up your way....perhaps blackberries?

Blessings
Catherine

I really enjoy feeding the birds here. We've had a flock of cardinals showing up lately for breakfast. They are so beautiful & I've never this many together at one time before. I just love watching all the birds that show up.

The only fly in the ointment has been the dang blasted squirrels. The little rodents tip my feeder over the minutes I fill it up. They dump all the seed on the ground, eat awhile & then leave the mess. I have a sock feeder full of Niger seeds & while the squirrels leave it alone, the birds seem to prefer my regular feeder.

I was reading that they are calling for a Midwestern backyard bird count. I think the date is 2/15 through 2/18.(I probably should have paid closer attention to the details.) The birds have decreased sharply here in IL in the last 30+ years. They are trying to get a head count to see how many birds are showing up this winter.
