Hi everyone I'm just beginning to crochet using MJ's marvelous instructions in the stitching book. I'm wanting to do the Shawl on pg. 68 in the book. I'm confused about the row 2 instructions. What does sc2tog mean and how do I do it? I googled it and came up with folks saying its a way to decrease, so should I follow the instructions in the book for a decrease or is that different? Also, it goes on to say to alternate picking up the front and back loops...so does the "front loop" mean the "v" or "braid" as MJ puts it? Or am I just picking up one actual loop from the front and one from the back. Its kind of hard to tell which is which...probably only because I'm such a beginner, huh? If you can make sense of my rambling questions and can talk me through it I would much appreciate it!  |

I haven't done the sc2tog...but it looks to me to mean single crochet 2 together...so..per instructions in MJ book, single crochet by grabbing the back string of the stitch (I'm using the keyboard to attempt what looks like a stitch) C> so in the stitch that looks a bit like that, you'd insert the hook under the top or back thread for the 1st part of the instruction, then insert the hook under the bottom or front thread C> for the 2nd part of the instruction which is sc2tog. So it's only part of the braid, either the front or the back, this is 1st the back thread of one chain, then the front thread of the next chain, alternately. Hope this helps!

This is what I do...may or may not be what's in her book...
place hook into next sc, yarn over, pull through sc, go into next sc, yarn over, pull through, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

The Adventurous Crocheter is my favortie book on the art of crochet. I would recomend anybody learning the art buy it. All the stitches are clearly illustrated and the girls give clear, easy instructions on making your own crochet patterns. This is a God send for someone like me who CAN NOT crochet to gauge to save thier soul! I knit right on, but crochet gauge has illuded me for 20 years! The book is out of print, but you can get it on amazon for less than $5...well worth it.

| btw...for sc2tog i just shove my needle through 2 stitches and pull through as if they were one. that's how my mama taught me and that is the concept used in knitting for a st2tog. |

Sherri, your post says "that's how I do sc2tog too", but which of the way's listed is your way? Corrine's way or Stephanie's or the way I wrote it from MJ's book? Sorry to be dense...you're probably referring to Corrine's method, but just wanted to be sure.

Hey Emme,
You will find with crochet that you can make alot of variations of the same stitch and still have a nice smooth stitch that works Of course, I thrive on trying something different just to see what happens..LOL Hope you found the one that was most pleasing to the pattern you are working
