Not so much watching bean prices, but about crying everytime to go to the feedstore. Price of all grain, soybean included yicks. I do realize the prices are great for those selling, but with the price of everything else going up, costs alot to plant that crop too. You guys must of beans to sell. Good luck, hope you get a great price.

Yeah, it is wild, isn't it?
We contracted some when the prices were in the $9 range and were very happy, and really, still are. A lot of people laugh when they hear that and say, "oh, aren't you mad you didn't wait, the prices are so much better now". Well, compared to the 5 and 6 dollars you could get at harvest, yeah we are happy.
Input costs have gone up, too, but it is still a great time to be in the farming game. I do feel sorry for people who are trying to feed animals, though. People at the grocery store don't typically have much tolerance for a similar increase in the price of livestock products. |

Yes, a bag of bran for the horses that is usually around $10 is now over $20. It's hard when you are on the other end. But most of the farmers around here haven't been able to pay on their loans for years, repair their equipment or buy replacements. So it's about time they got a break. The thing I am concerned about is the farmers that got a huge windfall from harvest and contracting, some of them are building huge houses, taking expensive vacations, buying monster equipment that is nicer/bigger than they actually need. Then if these great prices don't carry for a few years- they will still have payments.
I was just talking this over with some farming friends on Sunday. The best thing they said to do was to get the windfall from this harvest and contract at a good price to secure a good price for the next year, then buy or repair equipment that you absolutely have to have (but don't go crazy) and pay off as much of the loans/leases etc that you can. If you have extra money either put it away or buy more land.

We'll be paying off loans for sure (as much as I would love that Suburban!!).
At this point I think I'm more obsessed with the commodities market more than my husband. I find it fascinating to watch these prices change and watch beans and corn chase the market.
He also gets peeved because I swipe the trade magazines before he has a chance to read them. Eh, he can usually find them near the tub so I don't feel too sorry for him!
