Do you know if the flannel prefolds are more absorbent then the chinese or indian prefolds? I was wanting something more absorbent for nighttime (assuming she will actually start sleeping at night LOL).

I used cloth diapers on my first child. At that time he was in day care, and the provider wasn't too excited about it, but she obliged me. By the time #2 came along, 6 years later, we started with cloth, but it didn't last too long. We had a service that picked up the diapers and returned clean ones - once a week. After a week of dirty diapers in the house....well. We caved. I was the oldest of 6 and my mom always used cloth diapers too. We rinsed and washed them ourselves. When my babies have babies, I'll probably recommend cloth too.

I am not sure what fabric the indian prefolds are made out of. If you want something a bit more absorbent, what I suggest is just putting a liner in. You can buy soft washclothes 18 for $5 at Wal-Mart. just tri-fold those and they work great.

Wow! What a wonderful wealth of information from everyone! Thank you so much! I have much more of a direction now. There is such a variety of choices when it comes to cloth diapering. One thing I am wondering about is why everyone doesn't just use the AIO's over the kind that need inserts, covers, etc? If an AIO is all you need, why would you want to use a diaper that has so many extras? I am trying to keep this as simple as possible, so that is why I am wondering. Also, I had no idea there was such a thing as a heavy wetter, but our new daughter is definately one! Thanks again all of you! I can't wait to get my first cloth diaper. I will have to post about it when I do!

Anastasia-I use motherease too and it's all I have really had to use except when my babies were little-like brand new little. That is the only time the Motherease didn't fit but it only lasted a couple of weeks.

Michelle-

I didn't do AOI because I couldn't afford to buy them, so I sew all of our own diapers. The PUL fabric is kind of expensive at around $9 a yard. When I combine that with the flannel at about $2-4 a yard, it can get expensive. A friend loaned me her diaper wraps so that is what we used. For a next baby, I will try the AIO and PUL fabric because Diaper wraps are about $9 a piece anyway! :D

I am not a fan of PUL that's why I don't buy or make AIOs. I also think that AIOs are a little pricier than I care to spend or think is reasonable to spend on cloth diapering.

I have some of the motherease wraps and I don't even like those but we use them when we have to go long trips or something like that. Otherwise as a smaller diaper wearer, Zoe would wear woolies that I made or go without a cover or even without a diaper at home (we sort of do EC and it works to the extent that we do it-nothing that I could do as my sole baby 'going' method.) Now that she is potty training (and rather well too...) she doesn't wear a diaper at home, but instead wears panties. She only wears a dipe when we are going to be gone from home for a long while, like at a friends house or out shopping in Brainerd or something.

But yeah, not a fan of PUL and that is my main motivation for not buying AOIs.

I've included two helpful links for learning about CD options and helpful CD users. I also cut and pasted the Diaper Pin Definition of AIOs. That should help to explain why not everyone uses them. There are lot of different options when it comes to CDing and not everything is right for everyone. I found in interesting on Diaper Swapper's forums there have been several threads lately about simplifing their person diaper stashes. Almost all of them (like I think all but one) was going to either exlusively prefolds and covers or to prefolds, a few fitteds for DH and covers. They all had things like AIOs and pockets but found that they were not using them like they did the others. I personally found that interesting and it helped me feel better about my cheap stash that did not contain those more expensive diapers! Hope this helps!

All-in-one Diapers
Also known as AIO's, all-in-ones are fitted diapers that have an outer waterproof layer. Often they have fewer absorbant layers than their counterparts. These diapers are ideal for out of home use. They are not practical for daily use since frequent washing and drying reduces the effectiveness of the waterproof outer layer.

I make them from flannel that you can buy at any fabric store. It doesn't have to be diaper flannel either. White works best as it is more absorbent

Alee... this makes a lot of sense. Everything about babies has become so complicated these days that a little simplicity is sooo refreshing.

Do you use any kind of cover or does the flannel provide all the absorbancy you need?

Alright ladies, Here's a question...we have been cloth diapering my son for the past 6 months...all was going well, but the poor babe is VERY prone to diaper rash. I was using the gDiapers but with a prefold in it instead of the flushable insert, but it was getting terrible for him so we're on a break from cloth and using the 7th generation disposables for the time being.

What am I doing wrong?

You might need to switch from pre-fold cloth diapers to contoured cloth diapers that have a bigger soaker pad. This has really helped Nora as she gets bigger and more active. Also use cornstarch when they are when to dry them out if it is a moist looking diaper rash, if it is a diaper rash that looks dry and painful or even bloody- then you need to put a cream on it. I like to put a homemade cream of beeswax, vitamin E oil, and olive oil on (with lavender essential oil). If not, then you can use the commercial diaper rash creams or straight vitamin E oil.

If those two things don't help, he might have a yeasty diaper rash. At that point try the "Magic Butt Paste" or talk to your ped. about a prescription to get rid of it.

Also throw all your cloth diapers into a wash with super hot water and rinse them 2-3X before actually washing them through and drying just to make sure you have all the ammonia residue gone. I do this about once every 3 months just to be on the safe side.

Also plain white vinegar in the wash water helps to reduce ammonia residue buildup.

One last thing- give your little guy baking soda baths. Just put about a 1/2-1 full cup of baking soda in the bath water each time you bath him until his rash breaks. It helps modify the PH on the skin and stops progressive burning.

Thanks for the help with that.
My ped thinks I'm nuts for using cloth so she's not lots of help. She told me to just use disposables. Boo hiss!

I'll try your suggestions and hopefully we'll be back on track.

Again thanks a million!

Nora always gets an irritated bum when I put a disposable on her. All the bleaching/fragrences etc that are in most diapers are so harsh on their skin. Nasty. Ick. My pediatrician applauded me for using cloth diapers. He said in his experience the diaper rashes from cloth are a lot less worse than disposables. He said he wished that everyone would use cloth (Yay Dr. Spain!)

I guess it just depends on who you talk with, but we have had a roaring sucess with them. And like I have mentioned before- Doug my husband likes things the easy way, and even he recommends cloth to all our friends now!

ok....here is the absolute best diaper rash cure (no kidding) BREAST MILK. just pop your boobie out and spray a bit on that bare bum. it works wonders. i had one who had an uncurable diaper rash for 3 months before i read that and with in 24 hours the sores were healing over. after that i used it everyhime she started looking a little chaped.

It's amazing the things breastmilk will cure. My oldest once had redness and irritation in her eye - a couple drops of breastmilk in her eye for a few days cleared it right up!

I agree with breastmilk curing a lot but I don't think it helps if it is a yeast infection. For a true full blown yeast infection diaper rash (dry, itchy, red, little red bumps) you can smear a little monistat on their bum a few times a day.

This past week I took my daughter in for her 3week check-up and the doctor was saying how she has noticed more and more mom's using cloth diapers. She also talked about how SHE likes them because of the environment impact but also because she notices fewer rashes on the cloth diapered babies. Even she made a comment about the chemicals in the sposies must be bad since they are so irritating to the skin.

Now that is my kind of doctor!
