 I have been collecting wine corks for, hmmm, well lets just say a long time. I have some wonderful ones with great images or sayings!
I really want to create something with them- but, what?
Any ideas out there?  Thanks so much in advance.

Tawyna, I have a bushel basket of the things...lets see how about a cork coaster? Or stick them on nails on a cork bulletin board to display the designs on the top then frame the bulletin board in a pretty frame? Put little signs underneath the corks of when you had the wine, how it tasted to you, what was the occasion...kind of a living "cork" wine journal? The metal cages on Champagne I make little wire garden chairs out of...Now I sound kind of strange but when my daughter was younger she used them in her dollhouse.

| You could glue them onto a bulletin board type thing, in a pretty pattern...then use it as a bulletin board, since the pins would go into the corks just as well as a flat corkboard. I think I've seen this done by Martha Stewart or something like that... |

How would you make a cork coaster? I love that idea,I've thought of it before- the would look so great in my kitchen. But, how would you do it.
I really love the idea of the living cork wine journal! That would be wonderful too! So many of the ones I have are from anniversaries or "nights to remember"- that would be great to create for our new bedroom.
For the bulletin board- which I think would be great in our kitchen too, would you use hot glue?
Thanks so much for the great ideas! I need to do something soon with these, they have filled up all my vases and are running over into large quart storage baggies. I think Hubby is going to thow them out when I'm not looking!

I saw a program on HGTV where they used the corks as the top of a table, then put a glass top over that. Some they glued in on their sides (so the writing was visible). Others were on their ends. It was unique and not an expensive project to complete.

I would imagine hot glue would work just fine. You might take a less important cork as a tester, and see if you can gently slice it in half longways, so that there would be a flat side to glue (rather than a rounded...it would certainly stay put better). And, it would also double your cork collection, so you would be able to make twice the neato stuff. 
Um, you do realize that whatever you do, you *must* post pictures... It's the rules, you know. |

Tawnya, A girlfriend made me a cork trivet, approx 8 x 8 inches square. She glued the corks together with hot glue. She used a pattern like two long and 2 side by side butt up against it. Not sure I can show you very well with the keyboard, but something like this: II= It is four sets across and 4 sets down (a set being 2 corks glued together). It's really cute and I've kept it by my stove for several years now. I need to reinforce some of the glue soon, but it has lasted quite well. One more idea!

I saw a ceiling in a fish restaurant in San Francisco (The Grotto?) covered with them. It could totally be a long term project. I found my eyes constantly drifting upwards to look at them all. :-)

I have thought about gluing them onto a wall as a sort of herringbone pattern wall paper. I did see a bulletin board done this way and it was very cute. The ones that are real cork are getting harder to find as the cork is not a renewable resource so a plastic substitute is now being used. I wonder how well the plastic ones will work as a hot plate trivet? Wonder if they will melt?

A friend of mine cut them in half (length wise) and glued them to a large picture frame. She had two more frames the same size , one she covered with bottle caps and the other matchbook covers they had collected. They hang in her dining room and are quite the topic of conversation. They started out with poster size pictures of places they had travelled to but I think now all three frames have mirrors in them. It is a very unique and interesting look!

use them in place of the fennials (SP?) on the end of a curtian rod!

These ideas are so cool. I have some from special occasions that I've written the date and occasion on and keep them in a clear jar. The others are just tossed into a crock in the laundry area.
I just might have to get them out. Where is my glue gun! |

I like the idea of gluing them to a wall or a ceiling (think of the acoustics!)... but I think DH would have a cow.
I have some on a trivet, about 8x8, just hot glued on there. DH and I have been saving our corks these near 5-years so we'll do something with them soon. :) |

Oh I just got a brainstorm...What about cutting the corks in half and hot glueing them in the shape of a "smiley face" on a colorful poster board, or one of your own design and framing and hanging it up to remind you of the "happy" moments the wines brought!

 These are wonderful ideas!I'd like to make it all! But, I agree with greyghost, my Hubby would have a cow too if I covered the walls and ceiling with corks!
I'm going to try Clare's trivet, and MeadowLark's idea of the coasters. I think those will go really neat together in our home.
Oh, but the table idea PJJ suggested from HGTV sounds cool too.
I'll just have to start getting the corks faster to make all the stuff I want to.

| We have lots of company, mostly family here at the coast so naturally,um, u know, lotta wine drinkin over the last several years. We save the cork and write on it what the occasion was,( as if we needed one) we write name of visitor and date. I have put them in a very large glass hurricae vase and keep them on disply. It looks great and I get alot of comments on it.Glass vase is full! Any kind of glass container will do. |

Corks are great for scrubbing the debris off a sharp knife...keep from cutting yourself getting it clean and won't scratch the knife. Especially the new Santoku knives, with the vertical ridges. I just keep one in the little strainer with the other kitchen sink stuff. I know this won't use up a bunch, but it's still a good thing to know.
