I got a whole bunch in the mail this past week. I haven't had a chance to cozy up with them yet, but I can hardly wait. What kind of garden do you grow? Flowers, herbs, veggies? This year will be my first and I'm so excited!

My DH got me a mini green house for my house. It is 5'tall by 3' wide & 18" deep. It has 4 shelves and has a zippered plastic door on the front. Which is great for 2 reasons, #1 works like a terrerium and #2 it keeps my kitty from being able to nibble on my plants. My chives, parsely and basile seem to love it in there as well as my ferns, polk-a-dot plant & violet. Oh, and it is on roller wheels so I can move it around. Now I just need to cozy up w/some of my gardening magazines and dream of my future seedlings that will be growing in there. hugz,

I have quite a few catalogs but Seeds of Change hasn't showed up yet. I'm going all heirloom this year. So far, none of the other catalogs has heirloom zucchini or broccoli so I have to get Seeds of Change in order to get those. There are various heirloom varieties in most catalogs but not very many to choose from. Except for Jung's. I have an order form for Jung's already filled out with most of my garden ordered in heirloom seeds. I just love Jung's. They're prices are great and their service is just wonderful. I'm getting my tomato seeds from Totally Tomatoes. Amish Paste do VERY well here. I can hardly wait to get them all in the mail. I have to go get some dirt...

So far I have gotten Territorial, Seeds of Change, Cook's Garden, Vermont Bean & Seed, Jungs, Stokes, Seed Savers, Nichol's, and Baker's Creek. I think that I will do the majority of my shopping at Vermont Bean. They seem to have a wide variety and good prices for a smaller company. Has anyone else used them? I like how the Cook's Garden has mixed blends so I can try several varieties but only buy one pack.
This year I am really going to try to grow the things we actually like to eat. Every year I get so excited and buy things just to get, only to have it mostly go to waste because we really don't eat that much of it. Two years ago I had 97 tomato plants because I wanted every variety I could get. I had them all flagged and wanted to keep track of the specific types and compare them for a variety of traits, but then I got pregnant and sick, so they all just got canned. Well, not all, but more than plenty for us. I am a geek like that. I try to be all scientific about things.
But, I am also resolving to eat a greater variety of foods, so I think my resolutions are working against each other!! ;) We are moving to a house just down the road from our county's King of the Farmer's Market, so I am hoping to be able to channel some of my produce through him. We are actually buying his son's house which is where some of his produce was grown, so I am hoping to work out a sweet deal with the King. Happy dreaming!

I've received the Stark Bro's Fruit Tree catalog, but not any seed catalogs yet. I'm looking for the Gurney's to arrive just any day now though.

I have received (and well dog-eared) both Seed Savers Exchange and Bakers Creek. Also received Burpee, but I don't think I'm going to really bother too much with that one this time out. I'm also going to do mostly, if not all heirloom, this year. DH has been driving me nutso about those darn Russian Fingerling potatoes!!! I can see it now, we'll have three different types of fingerlings!!!!

Never heard of Jungs- I'm going to look for it now though...I like the heirlooms too. I'm a terrible gardener! I mean really bad! But I love to try anyway because I feel so strongly about the food we eat, and really- what beats a fresh tomoato snack? Going to the garden with a bottle of salt and ready to eat...I love that part!
Veggies from the supermarket so often taste like nothing. No flavor. slicked with oil and wax and probably little nutrition. Bleh. Can't stand that. I give up on planting fruit trees. I have a herd of goats and they seem to always find their way somehow to my baby trees. Or the clematis or passion flower vine. So- I gave up on a pretty yard for lots of good milk.

Dalyn, Jung's has been around for quite some time. They are offering more and more heirlooms each year. This year is the best so far. I've been very happy with plants I've bought from them, too. And if I kill them for whatever reason, they replace them, no questions asked. Not that I kill a lot. But I order so much every year, it's inevitable that I'll lose something.
Toni, I have ordered from Vermont Bean and they are also a great company. I had quite a list written from their catalog this year...until I opened Jung's. Jung's had everything I had wanted from VB but a little cheaper (10-50 cents a pack difference adds up!). I ended up crossing off every line on that VB list. There's always next year.

Lisa, Thanks for the tip on Jungs. I must admit, I haven't looked at that catalog yet, but I will now. For some reason, I tend to avoid catalogs that are too glossy and have so much stuff, like Gurneys, and I kinda think Jungs catalog looks like that. I have no reason for this avoidance, but I guess I am a sucker for marketing. Must go look at Jungs, ten cents a pack will change my mind on an order like the one I have going.
Dalyn, I am with you...terrible gardener here! I have great intentions, but lack the will power for weeding. But I do love to eat, so that helps get the hoe going! |

Lisa, Thanks for the info about Jungs. I am trying to grow mostly heirlooms in my garden also but I've never heard of them before. I'll check them out.

I agree, Toni, Jungs catalog does look kind of cluttered and overly busy the way they organize it. But I'll tell you the ones I avoid are the ones who's pictures are mostly cheesy drawings rather than photos. You know the ones I mean? I tried a couple different ones in the past and their quality is less than ideal but their customer service is even worse! They were a total hassle to deal with and I came away very dissatisfied. I don't even look at those types of catalogs anymore. They go straight into the round file.
Marcia, if you look Jung's up on line you can get even more info on their heirloom varieties. Several that were listed in the catalog said to look them up for more details.
I also like Wayside Gardens for flowers and such (no veggies there) even though they are kind of spendy, but they have seriously high quality plants and packaging. One Green World in Oregon is another good one for unusual plants, bushes and trees and their prices are pretty reasonable. Musser Forests is another really great company for trees and bushes and some perennials too. I'm going to order a bunch of forsythia bushes from them this year to close off a neighbor's view.

Lisa, have you tried Bountiful Gardens? I got their catalog today and haven't really had a chance to look at it. I saw the first page had amaranth, but didn't get passed that yet. Not enough pictures, though. |

No, Toni, I've never heard of Bountiful Gardens. But I just looked them up on line. No pictures at all of the veggies. I guess you really have to know your varieties to be able to order what you want from them.
