Good morning, I was visiting the farm where I will begin my Nanny job in mid January and became very excited. The farm has been in the family for generations and is now up for sale but the owner is really hoping to keep it. She is a single mom and a full time nursing student with 3 boys 5,7,10. The boys each have their very minor disabilities but none of which will not lead a very useful and productive life. The boys also love to be outdoors and in the dirt. They do not even play video games. Had a station but did not use it so they gave it away. The farm is down to 70 acres but has a full barn which needs minor work (oh I took DH with me should have seen his eyes open and brain whirl on what he could do with the place)A very cool summer kitchen which of course needs some work but what a cool building, a home that is in the middle of remodel and needs help in clean-up and paint just to start, and an out building/garage that you can't get into but saw lots of cool things in there. It is set up for horses and dogs. She use to raise St. Bernards and Collies and also horses which she was a state champ a few years ago. The owner has been leasing the land to an organic farmer for the past 12 years so chemical wise there should be nothing there. I have free reign to use the place as I see fit. Can't wait to clean the inside during the winter months and then move outside come spring. She would like to have a garden this year but knows she can not do it on her own. But has offered to pay for all plants and my time above what my salary is, to help her and I can have anything I want to take for my freezer too. This job is becoming more interesting as I learn more about her. I was shocked when I found out that the family has homes in Florida and South Dakota along with a vacation home in upper Wisconsin. And that I would be traveling to all three with her and the boys. Now I get paid for gardening and canning and freezing too. I'm hoping to use the summer kitchen for selling my crafts and stuff I create during the summer months. I never thought I would be on the farm but here I come.

| Hi Betty Jo. I was felt so bad for your employer until I read the part about all the property she owns. Sell one save the farm, easy enough. But the posting is really about you and your love for Farmgirl stuff. I hope you can have a farm of your own someday. Farms come in all sizes, mine is micro (1/3 acre) but you would be amazed at all I grow (you can read about it in the Welcome forum). You will receive a great experience with that job. As to the children, it will probably turn out they are not disabled at all. My daughter is autistic but no one would ever guess, she's also a business woman and makes a great living. I believed in her and paid no notice to the doctors who wanted to institutionalize her when she was a little girl. Have fun. |

Hello,
I actually have my own little farm of sorts. My DH and I have 5 acres of woods and prairie which we are developing more each year. We have owned the land for about 10 years and used to bring my kids to camp and do outdoor stuff every other weekend. Two years ago we built a home on it and are still in the process of finishing the landscape. It is a beautiful quite place that we have, with lots of wildlife who enjoy my gardens as much as I do. So the new job/place will offer me a chance to do big gardening along with help. That co-op type thing. I have always dreamed of having someone I could share this outdoor passion with along with helping during the putting up season. It goes so much faster when two are working together. I am also excited as she would like to get the farm running again and broad horses along with other animals. It seems to be the perfect fit but you never know what will come of it. Since my children are grown and out of the house it will be great to be back in a house doing what I do best. Be a stay at home Mom.
